The Matrix Resurrections

I guess I’m in the minority but I’m really enjoyed it, maybe because I’m not a big Matrix fan. I enjoyed the first two films, thought the third completely faceplanted, and went in to this just wondering what was left to do with the whole concept. Overall I thought it was a fun romp that refused to take itself or the material too seriously (a big fault of the third move imho) and delivered a take on the franchise that actually felt fresh, at least to me.

This was fun/interesting for the first hour or so, but the heart of Neo & Trinity excelled it into a 5/5.

Honestly, imagine if The Analyst was played by Mads. Would have made this 6/5.

It really is sad that this didn't turn out better because I actually think a proper Matrix sequel could have had a lot of potential, especially with Keanu being more popular than ever again.

It just seems like he isn't having much success outside of John Wick though and for me this was one of the biggest misfires of a sequel I have seen since Independence Day Resurgence.

I honestly disliked it that much and now that I think about it I have a hard time understanding why Warner Bros even agreed to this if they were going to half ass it this much outside of a quick cash grab.

Seeing how good Star Wars: Visions ended up being I'm surprised they didn't consider doing something in the vein of the Animatrix which would have been alot cheaper and easier to make.

An adult, animated Matrix show made for HBO Max would have been really interesting to see IMO considering the great reception there was for Animatrix back in the day.

i kind of feel like in a weird way now is the PERFECT time for a Matrix movie because look at what our society has evolved into since 1999. The original Matrix was warning people to "unplug" and over the past 20 years we've done the complete opposite. We are ALL completely plugged into technology--all the time. Phones, tablets, computers, video games, social media...message boards. There is so much so so much ripe material to critique and deconstruct in our modern society that'd be perfect for a Matrix movie but Lana elected to make fun of blockbuster movie culture instead which is fine and all but its a missed opportunity to not address those other topics of our modern society.

Making the Agents into just civilian programs that become hostile at a flip of the switch was an interesting change, but missed the men in black look.

Also I get why the phones being portals concept was gone due to the abundance of smartphones?

This movie occupies around the same slot I put the horror movie Malignant in - both somewhat traditional hybrid experimental movies this year that have successes and failures and divisive viewer responses. Though you could say Malignant has the better action scenes, the type you might have once found in The Matrix.

Of all the things to be lacking, I would not have expected it to be action. I confess it will probably be what grinds on me over time. I have no problem with dropping old staples, but there isn't much new or exciting to replace it.

A while back I considered the possibility that this film could be the result of a Matrix film being made with or without the Wachowski's involvement. Watching it, the film certainly suggests that this was the case. Kinda weird. Definitely better than the alternatives Warner Bro's would have cooked up.
