The Natural Disasters Around the World Thread

Glad you're okay, Deej. Sleep well.

I never drink tap water.

You should. Bottled water is bad for the environment and it's been proven not to be "healthier" than tap.

Hope everyone in Florida is pulling through. Looks like a mess.

Getting a bit windy over here. Lots of rain. Nothing crazy though, was just out smoking a cig on the porch. We still have power but lots of folks around us don't.

Flint is obviously not the norm.
I'm all for protecting the environment, but when it comes to tap water I say the environment will just have to deal with it.

My town had those brain eating amoebas in its water lines one time. The town council made a public announcement telling everybody to boil any water that we got out of the faucets. Needless to say that was a nerve wracking week. Ever since I'm paranoid about tap water getting up my nose and I only drink tap water if I can't get filtered water or bottled water.

Bottled water>>>>>>> tap water. Besides, city tap water tastes like ass.

If it's tap water from a well, however, I'm less hesitant of drinking it. Well water tastes better than city water.

My building lost power from Irma. Otherwise everything is okay here.

Woke up here at my buddies place with no power, part of a tree went down in the front yard but that's it here. My roommate said we still have power at our place a few blocks over though and no damage there.

My family in Polk county got hit pretty hard but everyone is okay there.

UPS battery backups should always be required technology when you're in an area prone to storms.

That is your prerogative, but then you can't complain about price gouging for bottled water before a storm. Bottled water is no safer or healthier than tap (in first world countries, I'm not talking about the water quality in third world countries, because it obviously sucks). You're better off buying empty jugs and turning on the tap.

I'm glad everyone seems to be okay. :) Must have been a wild night.

my uncle evacuated but his house in Orange Park has flooded. He is in his 80s and has a daughter in a wheelchair, so i'm very much worried about what they're going to come home to :(

I was in Miami on summer vacation for Hurricane Andrew, and now live here for Irma. I think going through the Cat 5 in 92 helped prepare for this one. Buildings are more fortified etc.

Sounds like just some minor wind damage for me and everybody is safe. I consider Florida rather fortunate actually. There was a lot of damage for sure, but it could have been much, much worse.

My power was restored earlier this afternoon

Ya if the eye had stayed out in the gulf on track for Tampa Bay like they predicted it would have been really bad.

It also slipped over Cuba which weakened it a bit and prevented it from slamming into the Keys as a Cat 5.

Yup, could have been so much worse than how it went down.

Was really cool to see my job step up for all of us here. Lots of St. Pete has no power so they opened up the 2nd floor of the corporate office here and said any employee is welcome to come get some AC, charge phones, get a hot shower, or even stay there if they need to. They said they don't even expect you to work if you're not up for it.

Pretty cool to be involved with a company that takes care of their employees so well.

That is really great. Too bad more employers aren't like that. :(

Ya they bought everyone pizza for lunch yesterday, today they grilled hot dogs and made chili with a bunch of cookies and brownies.

Meanwhile, one of my reps who's son has autism had to leave work to give him a ride to work at Walmart where he is part time because they changed his schedule and his taxi service couldn't accommodate him and he was afraid of losing his job.
