The Dark Knight The new and improved Mr. Reese thread

It just seems like suddenly there are a few "What if Batman was real" issues popping up? Some of that I like, like the vigilantes, and the police questioning Batman's actions and trying to catch him (hopefully).

But how does he find out Bruce is Batman? Does he walk by when Fox is making the Batsuit? :)
He walks by when Bruce is modelling the Batsuit? 'Does my bum look big in this... cos my neck definitely doesn't.':woot:

Possibly they could've just conflated Reese and Engel and had him find out purely through investigation. Maybe he's there to bounce off Fox, although it's time to kill him really

Why's there an angry mob outside the studio? Just protesting Batman's potential outing? And why would dirty cops want to kill Reese? Too many questions

From what i've heard and read, Reese finds out Batmans true identity, blackmails Fox with it, and then tells Mike Engel who batman is, then Engel promises to tell everyone on his show, Joker stops this with a bomb threat, then Fox somehow blackmails Reese into not telling.
But that's just what i heard.

Hmm, interesting.

Yeah I think this Reese character will be a kiss @$$ to Dent and he will end up biting the dust by the hands of the Joker.

Why? Nolan has described this film as the story of a city. It's supposed to have lots of characters. I get the feeling some people are just of the opinion that if a character is not in the comics then he or she is automatically worthless.

what I will say on that is that (imho) there is no need to create characters who are not in the comics when characters from the comics will do.

Yes, but that's a little short-sighted. You're limiting the kind of story you can tell by just sticking to a small group of characters. Despite all the new characters Nolan has still thrown in thee major new characters from the comics: Joker, Harvey Dent, and Sal Maroni. Those are three big additions to the cast, but you need supporting characters to help tell a story and there may not be any suitable characters for the story Nolan is telling.

In some way I agree, in some ways no. For example it would've be great if Nolan simply named one of the cops Merkel instead of Jones or whaver he'll be. Likewise the reporter could share a name with some obscure reporter from an issue 10 years ago and that would be kinda cool.

But then consider Gator and Killer Croc. Imagine the uproar and the dissapointment in seeing a non-scaly smooth talking Croc strutting around in TDK. But just name him Gator and voila he's merely a shade and it's all good.

Not at all, especially if they've met at least once, as The Joker would enjoy their "game". I don't mind him being oddly protective of Batman, but I think forcing that particular plot point is unneccessary. It just smacks of "We couldn't find anything to do with Lucious Fox so we're doing this".

"Oh, I just stumbled on who Batman is".

It had better be incredibly well done. It just strikes me as the kind of story point that should be reserved for something like a Batman TV series...not a movie. And let's face it, Bruce Wayne's identity being uncovered...it's been done.

The whole Batman thing's "been done". :whatever:

Oh come on. You know what I mean. BATMAN FOREVER introduced Robin, The Riddler, and Two-Face's ongoing schemes to the movie mythology. It would be like if they used Penguin and Catwoman and an evil businessman for THE DARK KNIGHT.

I found it to be very strange that every time the character we knew as "Reese" was on screen he was refered to as "Mr. Reese".

He knows a big secret, and has a slimly villanous way about him.

Let's re-evaluate the character now that we've seen the film and discuss;

Why would he be "snooping around"?

He went straight to Mike Engel, who we know from the GCN viral, isnt a Batman supporter.

And finally, why is he refered to only as "Mister Reese"?

Hmmm, Mr Reese...Mis...ter...eese...Mysterious? And what did Michael Gough teach us in Batman Forever?

they said his name in the film. It began with a c but I can't recall. It was something like campbell reese

Does Gordon know that Wayne is Batman? he mentioned something to Wayne about him protecting Reese. He knows that Wayne is his employer and that obviously Reese must have been jaded about something to do with Wayne. To Gordon Wayne's actions might explain how Reese knows who Batman is. He didn't seem that surprised to see Bruce show up when he did. Plus when was offered a choice between Dent and Rachel Batman chooses Rachel.

The relationship between Rachel and Bruce is on the public record?

Nah, Gordon made it pretty clear in that scene he thought Wayne was an idiot.

He didnt go straight to Engel, he tried blackmail first.

Also, your reading to much into his character, he was only there to get shot at.

He was a pretty minor character, but some of my favorite dialogue in the film revolved around him...

i.e. Lucious Fox's response to him blackmailing Bruce Wayne by exposing him as Batman, as well as the Joker telling people to kill Reese later in the film. Wish I could remember the exact dialogue to both scenes, but both got a huge laugh from me.

And God, if he turned out to be Riddler, that'd be so lame. He worked as a plot device, but he never once screamed Riddler to me. I guess Reese is going to be the new Mike Engel for some people.

He was a minor character whose actions lead to some pretty awesome events in the film.

Engel seemed pretty unnecessary apart from the talk show bit with Reese.

Reese is NOT the Riddler, plus he has already answered a big question... or got a fair idea.

Yea I have no clue why that Engel character had so much secrecy around it. Engel was pretty much a background character that really held no importance in the film (apart for the aforementioned Reese part by the above poster). I really dont get why they got AMH for a role for that had only about 5 minutes of screen time...

I think thats what has some people buzzing. Something might happen in the third film to make us go "Oh so thats why...". Nolan seems to like playing cat and mouse with movie goers so I wouldn't put it past him.

LuLucius talking down Reese is BY FAR one of my favorite scenes, along with the finisher at the crash scene. It's actually kind of chilling. I love how they made Batman this terrifyingly competent guy who "has no limits". Spying, rendition, throwing people from buildings.....bring on the Goddamn Batman in movie three.

One thing I noted and wanted to share to hype people who haven't seen it :oldrazz: is the QUALITY and distinctiveness off all the extras and bit roles across the board. They're all real people. None of them are cheesy. The guys on the ferry, the fat bearded guy in particular. Deebo(!) playing it surprisingly cool. The cop Berg, he was perfect. The Chechen! the way acted at the drug deal and and how he quickly realized Joker was deserving of his respect.

but above all, Detective Ramirez! What a pleasant surprise she was. I liked all the little pauses on her and I really hope she's back for movie three.

"Are you saying your employer is a dark vigilante, who takes on criminals and beats them to a pulp with his bare hands without them knowing he was there", You want to take him on....Good Luck"

I know it isn't close at all to the lines, but damn, I love Lucious.
