As for the characters we might see in the film, Kinberg noted that when it came to X-Men and New Mutant-related characters the films haven’t used yet, “There's a very deep bench. There's a long, long list of names, and I'll tell you some of the names on that list I don't even know. That's how deep it goes.”

Previous X-Men movies have used characters associated with the New Mutants, including Warpath, Sunspot and, of course, Professor X, the team’s original mentor. Speaking to whether we might see any already-introduced characters from the X-Men movies in the New Mutants film, Kinberg remarked, “Traditionally, the New Mutants have some characters that cross over from the mainline X-Men movies. As we are going, I would say it's likely that you will see some familiar faces.”

I couldn’t help but mention to Kinberg that I had my own lifelong affection for the New Mutant character Magik/Illyana Rasputin and had my fingers crossed she’d make it into the film. Kinberg replied, with a grin, “It’s a great role… It would be a great role to cast.”

Also head over to the IGN comments to see people *****ing about him describing the film as "Young Adult", which suggests those commenters have never read any actual New Mutants comics.

The restrictions are likely to be not being able to use Cyclops,Jean,Storm and Nightcrawler, while Xavier,magneto and beast maybe but even then the biggest issue with that is that since they are doing films in the past then to keep some mystery and stop people complaining they know whats gonna happen so the guidelines probably will be pretty strict, even for wolverine 3 with patrick i am assuming there will be little past cryptic mystery teases but his involvement will be for wolverines story away from the mansion, otherwise it will be very difficult to keep past and future going at same time if you can't find any distance to make it worth it.

The safest bets would be in the range of iceman, kitty, blink, sunspot, warpath, rogue.

I think they could use Professor X without a problem, though given how the movies (and comics) often have to struggle to write around his powers, they may actually prefer to use a teacher character whose abilities aren't such a plot-breaker. Shadowcat would certainly fit that role, for instance, and Page is an actress with a decent profile who's also affordable (though she'd also, frankly, not look that much older than her students).

In terms of the actual group, given all the talk about diversity in film, the New Mutants group are a huge opportunity. Dani Moonstar, especially -- how many notable Native American characters are there in popular media, particularly outside of period pieces? And she was probably the closest to the lead character in Claremont's run.

I want James Marsden mentor the New Mutants. Though Ellen and Kelsey could be cool too. I'm not eager for Patrick Stewart to appear in this film since he's already appearing in Wolverine 3.

... jk. Well kinda. Give the guy his due. He and Cyclops have been terribly shafted, and he's a perfect mentor for a group of teen characters.

Negasonic would be a fun addition too.

I get that but I think any movies set in the past are gonna be around 80s/90s and it's probably gonna be focused on Prof X, Cyclops, Beast, Jean and Storm. So the new group of actors. Gambit, Deadpool, X-Force and New Mutants as well as Wolverine are all looking to be set in present and future.

If Maisie is in talks i'm super happy. Love her so much. And a new young actor approach is always better. I know we have Angel, Jubilee etc in Apocalypse but they aren't as on people's minds as someone like Sunspot who was only just featured in DoFP, how will they explain that character. Unless he's just a teen in New Mutants and is a lot older in DoFP. Could work especially if New Mutants is set in the 90s.

I don't think they'll set it in the past. Unless they're gonna make Illyana older than Pyotr. I would rather they not mess up anymore family connections. Esp now that we've got a very good Colossus. Alex and James being involved seems weird, or they could flat out not use Patrick and or Halle.
