I loved Bill Sienkiewicz's atmospheric original New Mutants artwork.

Huh? New Mutants aren't restricted to the 80s. New Mutants can evolve through time. Just because there's a group of new mutants in the 80s doesn't mean that there aren't new mutants being trained at the mansion in the future just like NTW.

To me, it makes far more sense to set New Mutants in modern day (or close to it) because it'll help set them apart from Apocalypse (where Scott, Jean, and the rest are just as young).

Er, what? What about NTW's outfit was specifically a New Mutants outfit? It was a stake on a pretty standard sort of X-Men suit, with no particular association with the New Mutants.

In fairness, the comic New Mutants wore those original X-Men outfits for a long time (while the regular X-Men had individual outfits).

Regarding the casting (if true). I'm thrilled. I'm more thrilled by the confirmation that these are the original characters, but the choices are good (especially Maisie Williams for Raine Sinclair).

New Mutants is kind of redundant with another group of teen mutant students out there in the form of the X-men. i dont see a purpose to having them in the 80s with the new crew there. It does make more sense to have them in modern time with the adult X-men serving as mentors. It could spin out of Deadpool bc something like we saw with Colossus and Negasonic Warhead is what Id imagine for the NM. They could bring back Kitty and/or Iceman to be mentors to the other students at the school we didnt see. Those students of course being the New Mutants

If they keep putting these movies in the future it completely cuts off any chance they have of crossing over with the flagship team they're establishing in Apocalypse. Having older characters from the OT pop-up is well and good but after three movies with newer actors playing those characters, who cares?!

They can certainly differentiate between the X-Men and the New Mutants if both are going to be set in the same timeframe. X-Men is the default team setup to go out on missions, save the world etc. New Mutants were a group of students/friends inside the mansion that just always fell a**-backwards into drama - they weren't a strikeforce or team like the X-Men.

seems to me some seem to care more about characters crossing over with
deadpool than X-Men.

your right on how new mutants can be different than X-Men.

there is little to suggest after the wolverine solo film that fox will use any of
original cast ever again.it seems much more likely new mutants will be set in past so cast members from apocalypse can appear.

I think FOX are trying to balance out future/present and past so there is no risk of alienation by keeping everything as a period piece.

But saying that if fox plan on continuing these films in the past setting then they really should layout some seeds around it otherwise you have to keep everything pretty confined

Thats not a problem and its Fox fault for connecting FC to the OT instead of just doing an actual reboot. They have been stuck ever since, but thats a seperate issue....

and it is redundant to have two teams of teenage students concurrently in the movieverse. This isnt the comics which can handle multiple overlapping books. Even when the NM were introduced, they filled a void bc the X-men were primarily adults and long past the classroom days at that point. They were supposed to be the next generation and thats kind of lost if they are the same generation as the X-men. Thematically it doesnt really make sense to have them introduced after the original X-men have only been seen on one mission. If it were to be in the past, that group should at least be a bit more established so that when a novice group of inexperienced students come in, there is a natural level of seniority. As it stands if they introduced the NM in the same timeline, there really isnt any reason why they shouldnt be X--men alongside Scott, Jean, etc...

Setting NM in the future gives them breathing room and while it doesnt allow for crossover with the Apocalypse team, it does allow them to build movieverse going forward that crosses over with future X-men and other spinoffs that may be created. Setting it in the 80s, kind of limits them

oh jesus another fox should have made first class as reboot

that was never going to happen as long as hugh jackman was still playing wolverine.

first class would never have been made as reboot.the entire reason why they set it in 1960's and did magento and xavier origin/backstory was because
they were making it part of exsisting.it's all moot now since they did a
different kind of reboot in DOFP.

X-Men and new mutants can for sure be done in same time frame.

When it comes to whats important i think the the main X-Men team movies will always be the flag ship movies and since they are set in the past the biggest thing they shouldn't do is take away from that, like taking characters and putting them in the present or showing characters you see in past movies in the present totally fine, or restricting characters because its believed they all need to be in present day because that would basically be restricting what they can do and thats probably not the best thing to do when the teams are likely to get the biggest event movie type stuff happening.

And really is new mutants is in the 80s it wouldn't resctrict much since you can still use older versions of them in present day.

But overall its all a grain of salt that its in the 80s

Doubtful. Drew McWheeney isn't known for posting false movie rumors or details - it's more than likely true in some form or fashion. They're probably still in contract negotiations so Fox saying it's not true wouldn't be entirely wrong.

Its not only because I want to see some of the original cast to return... but there are other factors

1. I don't want 2 set of young mutant teams set in the past (Cyclops' team and Cannonball's team)
2. I want to see Cyclops, Storm, Rogue or Jean have their own mutant squad or mutant trainee just like Colossus especially they are in the right age to lead a mutant squad
3. I don't want to see Magik as old or older than Colossus

New mutants may not end up just being a story about mutants being trained, its probably gonna be more a personal story about these mutants, just like how X-Men apocalypse is probably not gonna be all about them just being trained since there is likely to be more depth going on then that, same with new mutants really so it probably wouldn't be just an excuse to use OT charaters as passing the torch type mentors anyway

Hmmm but for a New Mutants movie, they don't have to bring the whole gang, similar to The Wolverine, Origins and soon Wolverine 3. It could just be James Marsden or Halle Berry or Anna Paquin acting as the mentor and the others could just be name dropped or have a small cameo.

If the line-up is true, then they are replacing Karma for Magik? I never care for both characters, but if Cannonall and Wolfsbane are part of the team. I'm not excited to see Sunspot 2.0 since I already saw a Sunspot in DOFP and that was just 2014.

I would assume Kitty would be the most natural candidate and it would even tie in with her role in DOFP. Bobby maybe too. Halle would most likely love to come back Forge could be her consort if they wanted to do a love story with her character Berry has been clamoring for.

It depends what they wanna do with storm in the past since if they wanted to say have something happen to storm that changes her in one of the apocalypse sequels then showing her in the present with no planned guidelines would mean that basically any films they make would have to lead up to how she is presented in new mutants and I have a feeling they may not want those restrictions going forward.
