Got'cha.

Can we guess that the e-mail regarding Rothman bringing up Elgort, Lerman and O'Brien to be one of the fake ones, then?

Not fake. It just wasn't in regards to Spidey, it was about another movie.

EDIT: Guess Talion cleared that up, nevermind.

Correct, that movie been Baby Driver.

If Sony was on board what Marvel is doing - and all things indicate they were - it makes sense that they've never even considered O'Brien or Lerman to begin with, other than Variety no other trade has reported on that, what makes me believe that redditleaker23456 biggest feat was to make Variety believe on his hoax. That's redditleaker23456's legacy, if you will. I'm actually kinda impressed.

Well, for those who trust Jeff Sneider beyond a shadow of a doubt... He has suggested in the past that he thinks Marvel is in the driver's seat with everything involving Spidey.

I do align with this thinking as well. Based on interviews, Spider-Man is Marvel's and Amy Pascal's baby right now, with Feige basically been the one in charge. Like it should.

With all due respect, I don't believe redditleaker created that hoax.

I honestly believe that at one point or another the name Dylan O'Brien was tossed around. Then it stopped being tossed around... Probably?

Variety only reports on things that are 100% truthful, unless they were just saying his name in general because he was one of the fan favorites, which would make a lot more sense, but even that, I doubt.

Sneider can make all the claims he wants that Marvel and Feige are 'in the driver's seat' as far as MCU Spider-Man is concerned, but it won't change the fact that, legally, the character remains a Sony-owned/licensed property.

Agreed. But I can't help feeling like Sony will let Marvel do the work.

^ No-one has yet been able to give a satisfactory reason why Sony would let Marvel have total control over a film that they (Sony) are financing, producing, and distributing.

That would be like Marvel giving Paramount total control over the first several installments of Phase 1 of the MCU.

You are correct. But then again, who could blame Variety saying that Dylan O'Brien and Logan Lerman were mentioned names for Spidey, when a lot of small websites were reporting on that based on redditleaker non-sense back in December? I do think that this was all a too-ellaborate hoax that went for far too long. People keep saying that "redditleaker got the deal right", and I ask... did he? We all knew that Marvel was talking with Sony because of the Sony leaks. We all could guess that it would either work or it wasn't. I think it's very naive to assume that he got the "deal right so he's probably right about everything else" line of thinking.

When I could prove that Wolff was one of the names been heard, NO ONE had heard about that before. It wasn't something easy to predict, especially that he would get to be one of the main contenders - or at least that's the story that the media is selling with his interview about Spider-Man showing up everywhere - that's something that you can prove that you've heard and not predicted. Now the deal? Anyone could say that the deal would either happen or not back then and they'd have 50% of chances of been right.

So back to my train of thought: Variety reporting that O'Brien and Lerman were mentioned IS true: people were talking about that. People, not neccessarially either Sony or Marvel, but people, claiming that Marvel and Sony were talking about them. A rumor, that was the impression that I've got from the offhand paragraph on O'Brien and Lerman from the Variety article.

Correct. But from the Sony leaked emails to pretty much anything we've heard from the press and even Kevin Feige interviews, I'd say that it's very fair to assume that Marvel is indeed "in the driver's seat'. It's a leased car, but it's still Marvel the one calling the shots right now.

Because Marvel actually knows what they're doing. They've never been in a position like the one Sony was in this past year. Marvel has always done fine on their own, Sony hasn't, they didn't need to let Paramount take control, while on the other hand, Sony might need to let Marvel take control.

Sony didn't absolutely need to make this deal, even with TASM2 disappointing in BO sales, and having the character affiliated with the MCU is clearly not the only way they feel they can make a profit off of their Spider-Man license, as evidenced by the announcement of their planned non-MCU Spider-Man animated film for 2018.

You can't be serious.

I'm serious, but I'm not sure if I'm following you here. Not trying to destroy anyone's hopes here, just putting some light on what the O'Brien email in the Sony Leak meant.

Still think it's a mistake to pass on the two best and most popular actors under 25 just to cater to some dumb High School theme and age restriction. O'Brien and Lerman are better actors than these kids they are looking at by a mile, already have built in fan bases and have pretty much proven they could carry a franchise. Forget that fact that I hate the idea of a bunch of High School Spider-Boy movies, it's just a smart business decision and both are very good actors that are capable of nailing the role.

I think that they are right on trying to find their own "Hugh Jackman" for Spider-Man. And other than Nat Wolff, I could see the other actors getting to do just that. Hoping for Timmy Chalamet, but I trust Marvel's call on this one.

I'm with you on that one.

I've a theory that Variety claiming that O'Brien and Lerman were "mentioned" as candidates for Spider-Man is a reference to the rumors created by redditleaker23456, and not anything remotely linked to reality. It's not a big deal of a line, it's not like Variety said that they were the runner ups, they just said they were "mentioned", and since that doesn't make sense with what Marvel is going for, I'm willing to believe Variety was never mentioning something that they got from people from Sony themselves.

The Variety article is from the 10th of February. Redditleaker posted the thread the 1st of March. Your theory is wrong.

What you want doesn't matter. Sony has decided they want to focus on the HS aspects of Peter's character this time round, and the casting is being tailored to reflect that... especially since a HS-age Peter is also something that Marvel Studios wants as well.
