Chris Evans was chosen from the Shortlist (he was added two weeks later), Chadwick Boseman was chosen from the Shortlist, Charlie Cox chosen was from the Shortlist, Paul Rudd was chosen from the Shortlist, Scarlett Johansson/Emily Blunt was chosen from the Shortlist (Emily Blunt was originally going to get the role, but backed out because of scheduling issues), Sebastian Stan was chosen from the Shortlist (he was added after he auditioned for Cap), Emily Vancamp was chosen from the Shortlist, Hayley Atewell was chosen from the Shortlist, Neal McDonough was chosen from the Shortlist, Terrance Howard was chosen from the Shortlist, Zoe Saldana was chosen from a shortlist, Dave Batista was chosen from a shortlist, Lee Pace was chosen from a shortlist, Andrew Garfield was chosen from a shortlist, Chris Zylka was chosen from a Shortlist, Tobey Maguire was chosen from a shortlist, James Franco and Dane Dehaan were BOTH chosen from a shortlist, Kirsten Dunst was chosen from a shortlist, Bryce Howard Dallas was chosen from a shortlist too.

All of that is a MONTH'S worth of research. I knew I would need it incase someone ever tried to bring this topic back up.

An actor is RARELY ever not chosen from the Shortlist compared when they are

I'm not going to highlight through that whole list, but those first two I've highlighted are definitely wrong.

Chris Hemsworth, Benedict Cumberbatch and Tom Hiddleston (Josh Brolin doesn't count) are only ones I can think of, virtually all of their other actors were from a shortlist as was Sony's castings too.

And I'm not 100% sure, I'm 80% sure. people hoping for a complete unknow to just come in, swoop down and land the part are probably going disappointed.

Chances are 20% to 80%. very unlikely to happen.

Omg those number smell!

Mostly because they just came out of harryoscop's ass.

Nope, Chadwick Boseman was chosen from a shortlist (mistakenly listed Cox's name, although he was chosen from an audition).

Nope.

Evans was contacted separately from the shortlist, after they had all tested. Trades were reporting that Krasinki was a lock, when suddenly, out of nowhere, Evans got the role. However, he was contacted among a group of other actors, so on a technical level he was on a shortlist, but not the one initially reported.

Evans was on the shortlist. A shortlist isn't always a set thing. In fact a shortlist can go in flux so in that sense you're correct. Evans wasn't part of the original list. But he was eventually on the list. His name didn't come out of nowhere like Ben Affleck or Jessie Eisenberg. It was known at the time that he was up for the role but most fans dismissed it because he'd already done fantastic four. I'm sure you could go back on the hype board and find that posters knew he was up for the role even then . It was out of nowhere in the sense that no one thought he would get it, but no, it wasn't out of nowhere in the sense no one knew he was in contention. You're correct Kransinki was considered a lock, but that doesn't mean no one knew Evans was in contention. It was known. But you overall point that anything is possible is correct.

People seem to be assuming that just because they weren't on the shortlist revealed to the public, that means they aren't on the studio's private shortlist. Like Frodo said, it's not always set. Our Spider-Man could easily be somebody not mentioned... after all, The Wrap mentioned that there were others.

My point about Evans was more so that he was among the actors who were reported to also be in contention, rather than on the initial smaller shortlist that got reported.

Forgive me if this was already posted, but I thought this was interesting.

The matter itself has been discussed here a little bit. It's quite possible that Asa already has the role, but we won't know anything for sure until Marvel and Sony get moving and officially announce it.

I will say this though; if it is Asa, I like that he's interactive with the fans. He might not be as passionate a fan of the character as Andrew was or as Tom seems to be, but he seems very approachable and open to criticism.

Care to elaborate?
It means you made those numbers up. There's no real numbers or evidence to indicate whether the shortlist is 80% likely or not. It's you talking out your ass.

If Marvel & Sony's track record in casting is anything to go by, then yeah, I'd say they're pretty accurate.

Robert Downey Jr, Chris Hemsworth, Mark Ruffalo, Benedict Cumberbatch, Tom Hiddleston, Charlie Cox, Chris Pratt, Chadwick Boseman, Tilda Swinton...

You know what's interesting? It's pretty much always the main heroes who tend to be cast off-shortlist.

Because he deleted them. If he is in any sort of contention - even if he's no longer in contention, or wants to be in contention - he shouldn't and wouldn't be allowed to talk about the role.

So Black Widow, Ant-Man, Winter Soldier and Gamora aren't main heroes now?

Chadwick was on the Shortlist:

even reported as the frontrunner by El Mayimbe

And the Studio had most of those actors in mind from the get go. Robert Downey, Benedict Cumberbatch, Mark Ruffalo and Tom Hiddlestone were Marvel's choices, they didn't even HAVE a shortlist when they casted them. Ruffalo was originally going to play Banner in TIH, Hiddlestone auditioned for Thor but was cast as Loki. Robert Downey was Jon Favreau's first and only choice for Tony Stark and Feigue had always been eying Cumberbatch for Doctor Strange.

He didn't talk about the role though. All he said was he's 6 ft tall now and something else that had nothing to do with Spider-Man

Did I say that? No. Rudd was Edgar's choice for Ant-Man years ago, too.

Cumberbatch was always being eyed, ey? Was that why Phoenix was this close to signing on for the role? No shortlist there - he was approached.

That Boseman report is Mayimbe saving face, so had he not been cast he could have said, "it was only a shortlist!"

I'm fairly certain Scarlet was never on any published shortlist either.

I already know all that other stuff, but fail to see how in any way it supports your argument.

True, but Marvel still considered other actors for the role, he was stlll on a shortlist but it was obvious he was going to get the role.

Nothing but BS rumors, Cumberbatch was always the one heavily rumored for the role.

Still proves that he was indeed on the shortlist and regardless of what people think of Mayimbe, he was spot on with that scoop.

No, but she was on Marvel's shortlist along with Emily Blunt (who I REALLY want to play Carol) as mentioned by Quesada in the IM2 Blu Ray featurette.

Point is, those actors weren't on a shortlist because they were always going to get the role, therefore they shouldn't count . it's not like there was a shortlist and Marvel decided to go with a complete unknown.

Anyway, Tom & Asa are being reported as the frontrunners by the Trades (something none of the other Marvel shortlists have done) not El Mayimbe, so it's likely to be one of them.

Stop fighting and cast Isaac off-list

Dude c'mon seriously, Isaac never had a chance.

Anyway, so much for that so called announcement we would be getting around Memorial Day. So far all "sources" are looking pretty unreliable right about now.

May is almost over guys... we should be hearing something soon.

Now I kind of hope they hold off on the announcement for a few more months. The conversations here are just getting more and more insane. Arguing who was on what/if there even were any shortlist, really? I can't wait to see how this debating degrades any further, specially since it won't effect Marvel's and Sony's decision at all.

That's whi you should always take rumors with a grain of salt. Lot of types people with either make up source, mishear rumors, or get out of date info. Sometimes studios will even purposely leak a fake rumor, like say they want an actor to agree to a role, they'll leak a more famous actor being "interested" or "in talks" to convince the first actor to take the role before it's gone. Remember how Jessie Eisenberg was on all of those rumored lists for Lex Luthor? Me neither. The point is, rumors and sources should be view in a general sense, not under a microscope.
