Days of Future Past The Official Dofp MAGAZINES Thread

He's also been heavily featured in the trailers.

I'm sorry, but you need to stop being so ********* about marketing decisions. It's just how promotion works.
It's an important American magazine where entertainment is concerned; the cover has been RT on twitter more than 500 times. So it's an important issue where a main actor is concerned. Maybe you could criticize other people here for a change, people who complain about everything all the time, even if the color of Blink's skin is wrong. I only post once or twice and there's always you or someone else complaining about my legitimate complaints. Other posters complained about the lack of a Prof X poster too, but of course you would have to single me out. :o

Can we all quit griping at each other, please?

I do apologize for sort of bullying you. I sometimes single you out because I do actually respect your passion but feel like I want to shake you by the shoulders sometimes. If I thought you were crazy/stupid like other posters I would just ignore, but I don't.

It's okay. It just saddens me to see a great actor like James being ignored by the American media just because he's not a guy chasing Hollywood fame. Not putting him on the cover is a way of saying he's not part of whatever it is that EW considers "the famous crowd" - but at the same time they are sending the (wrong) message that the character Charles Xavier is not important when compared to the others. This is the first big, influential American mag giving a cover to XMDOFP, and one of the main characters/actors is not featured. So far it hasn't happened in any of the European magazine covers I've seen.

If you read the content of the magazine, you will know that they are not ignoring him and there's a limit to how many characters Entertaintment Weekly has put to me in the cover.

I'm sorry, but you need to stop being so ********* about marketing decisions. It's just how promotion works. You even complained that the Xaviers (RE: James McAvoy) didn't get one of those posters and then one came out like ten seconds later.

Yeah I agree with you. The film has a big cast and they can't possibly include James McAvoy in every marketing material.

Entertainment Weekly has always had their go-to actors that they are obsessed with (they post random, run-of-the-mill things that JLaw does) so this was to be expected. Sad but true.

Is it any wonder Mystique is front and center?

They need to sell mags. Jennifer, Hugh, and Michael will SELL MAGS. Not everything is some god-awful slight against defenseless McAvoy (whom I adore, but lets be real here).

They need to sell the movie. EW needs to SELL MAGAZINES. It's all about who is going to do that. Heck, even Fassbender himself plays second fiddle to Jackman and Lawrence on the official poster.

Meryl Streep and Johnny Depp have small supporting roles in INTO THE WOODS this December. Do you really think they're going to use the films leads (Emily Blunt and the virtually unknown to American audiences, James Cordon) on the posters and magazine covers? Nope. It will be all Streep, all Depp.

A magazine like this will always concentrate on the actors with a highest profile, something that James doesn't really have in the US. It's kinda funny though that while they keep pushing Mystique front and centre, unless people already know it's Jennifer Lawrence under all that make-up many of them will probably miss the fact entirely.

At the end of the day, no one is going to remember a movie by the way it was marketed and no one is going to remember the characters/actors based on how many magazine covers they made.

It's annoying James wasn't included on the cover, especially since his character arc is the main one for the movie. His character is front and center in the plot, but not on the cover?

On the flip side--they are trying to sell magazines and Jennifer Lawrence, Hugh Jackman and Michael Fassbender are bigger US draws. James just isn't as well-known in the US, which is sad, but true.

I'd prefer to focus on the article itself, because I do believe they give him a lot of the word count there and the pictures are really good, including the first one where he is front and center.

A lot of the UK promo stuff has had James whilst america has had jen instead. I think its fine :)

Hated that scene. Goes from vehemently defending his brother to basically saying he's not my real brother. Completely out of character for the sake of a one-liner.

I hardly agree with this. Its not like the public neglected the X-Men. If I remember X-Men vol.2 #1 is still the most selling comic-book of all time.

Just because the last few X-Men movies were outgrossed by Spidey, MCU and DC films, it doesn't mean X-Men is suddenly the bastard stepchild of the "comic-book" universe. Because if it is the bastard stepchild of the comic-book universe, how do you describe Fantastic Four, Daredevil, Blade, Ghost Rider, etc...

I don't believe he means X-Men are the bastard the the readers but to the other characters in the marvel universe

X-Men have generally always been separate from other characters and ostracised for being Mutants.

Sure. Here's a larger look at the cover. I'll upload the rest, when the issue becomes available.

They all look awesome

Exactly. Plus there'll always be favourite characters who don't get the spotlight as the cast is too big.

I do find that interesting...when I say I'm a big James McAvoy fan here in the States, most people don't know who I'm talking about until I show them a picture--then, they go, "Oh! Yeah, that guy--what was he in again?"

I get the feeling James is much more well-known in the UK and Europe than here (which makes sense, given that most of his movies are not American ones, anyway).

Kind of like Storm being a wise cracking in your face mama saying "Do you know what happens to a Toad when it's struck by lightning... the same thang happen to errathang else girl?" :snaps: :storm :awesome:

And written by the same man ;)

I doubt Fassbender sells mags in the US. Highly doubt this.

And yes, it's a slight against a main character in the film. If you ask the GA in the US who is Fassbender, I doubt the majority will give you the right answer. If you ask about Magneto, more people will know who you're talking about. But it's the same with Professor X.

Anyway, I doubt they would less less magazine or less movie tickets if James is included on a cover. This is ridiculous.

I bet that if you said you are a big Fassbender fan the same would happen. I understand Hugh and Jen being front and center, but I don't understand Fassbender being on the cover and James not.

sex sells. That's why Jennifer Lawrence as mystique Is on front of cover.
It's obvious why Hugh Jackman would be on the cover. After Lawrence
Michael fassbender Is most hot FC actor. He;s an oscar nominee. He was in
another Sci fi hit Prometheus and he will soon he working on it;s sequel before Apocalypse.

Maybe because the former is more popular than the latter.

Fassbender is probably still not that well known in the US by the general public, but he is considered to be an actor whose career is on the rise. Whereas James doesn't really have that kind of "hot property" buzz. Also, Fassbender's Magneto is a much more action-oriented character (with his own superhero-ish costume) and is probably better suited to selling a big summer blockbuster.

Fassy is more popular than james here, what are you talking about?

Fassbender is on the rise. I think most people don't know him by name yet, but he was in Prometheus and 12 Years a Slave was pretty well acclaimed here.

I'm not saying I like that James isn't on the cover; I'm saying I get why they went with these three. It's not fair, but marketing rarely is.

I think Fassbender's career definitely took an upward swing after FC, that's for sure. Hotter as in...sexy/cute/handsome...gotta disagree. James is all kinds of sexy. But Magneto is certainly more badass than Professor X--this I will concede. :woot:

Fassbender is coming off the back of award noms for Twelve years a slave straight into this so of course he will be a major seller.
