The Official Green Lantern Review Thread - Part 1

One theme I've noticed in several reviews is that the reviewer did not care for the basic concept of the character to begin with. I'm also noticing an increasing level of annoyance among some critics growing tired of seeing yet another comic-book franchise being launched.

Thankfully, I am familiar with and approve of Green Lantern's origins and the basic premise, and I'm all about seeing more DC characters getting a shot at the big screen. So a substantial amount of negativity from these reviews won't effect me in the least as I watch the film.

I have to say that are many other problems that many reviewers are seeing that do have me worried.

I am going to give Warner Brothers my hard earned money this weekend regardless, in the hopes that they will not abandon every other hero in the DC universe(other than Batman) even if they dropped the ball with this film. At the very least I hope the special effects and action will be entertaining if the film is really as bad as many of it's reviews suggest.

I don't think the critics are saying they are tired of the genre as a whole, but the cliche, derivative superhero stores. It obviously doesn't help when the lead character isn't compelling.

As great as his 007 movies are, Campbell was wrong for GL. Honestly, this movie would have been a HUGE HIT if Zack Snyder were directing it.

Hate all you want, but Zack would have given us an amazing GL movie.

Snyder would have been worse. He's gone downhill since 300. Mediocre director.

Campbell is much more talented.

after sucker punch I'm surprised anyone would want snyder on ANYTHING.

Man of Steel isnt looking too bad with Russell Crowe confirmed for Jor-el... :o

Well imo Johns hasn't done anything good since Sinestro Corps War. He's a pale shadow of the writer who did JSA back in the day.

I dont know whats so special about Johns, to be honest.

He's not bad, but I find him to be completely overrated, too. As I intimated, his characters are always telling us how great they are, instead of just showing us. Throw in most of his stories never really ending but instead leading directly into the next story, and you've pretty much been made aware of my main problems with the guy's writing.

How Johns has gotten to be the king of the crop of DC's writers, I do not know. Give me Giffen, Bedard, and Nicieza any day of the week over Johns when it comes to straight-up superhero stuff from DC.

He did peak there, though I enjoyed everything afterwards that lead up to Blackest Night, which I found decent but not strong.

300? Watchmen? Both awesome adaptations that he knocked out of the park.

Sucker Punch was a side project with absolutely no source material to provide a template. So yeah, were Sucker Punch may not have been all that great. It is a very apples to oranges basis for any objection to him doing Superman.

That's a matter of opinion. I've loved everyone one of his movies.

Maybe so, but not for something like GL. Campbell learned about CGI and blue screens during filming! Zack would have given us bigger action, better visuals, better actors (I love the current cast), and more Oa.

He wouldn't shy away from showing something as CGI filled as Oa, whereas it seems Campbell did.

And besides, it's not like Zack would write the script. Get a good GL writer to pen a screenplay and voila! You've got the perfect GL movie.

There wouldn't have been a shortage of slow-motion scenes, that's for sure.

Sounds like Geoff Johns writing in a nutshell, basically.

As a person who actually is the Silver Age fan that Johns is portrayed as being, I agree. His episodes of Smallville with the JSA had some horrid dialogue. He writes dialogue that is bad for comics and sounds even worse when spoken in live-action. Guy's just a bad writer.

I had a bad feeling about this movie as soon as I heard the casting, RR and Blake Lively in particular. I'll still go see it, but I expect this to be the first and only GL live action movie.

I thought watchman was visually stunning (bought the blu ray) but the pacing, acting (rosharach aside) and score absolutely terrible. I will say that I thought the first 20 mins were pitch perfect but the movie decends into an absolute mess. each to their own but I hated watchmen.
I think the only truly decent movie snyder has made is dawn of the dead. I enjoyed 300 the first time I watched it found I couldn't watch it again when I bought the blu ray, no rewatch value.

the guy delivers great visuals and great action but has no idea how to tell a compelling, engaging story, he is like the anti-nolan.

Of this particular interpretation you mean, right? I mean, should it bomb, we could always keep our fingers crossed for a reboot of some kind in our lifetimes (sooner rather than later, hopefully).

The public didn't enjoy his stuff after 300, they've all been bombs.

Have u read the reviews? Action and visuals aren't the film's problem. It's hollow and lacks substance.

Snyder would be a much worse choice.

I've enjoyed eveything jones has done pre blackest knight and disliked everything he has down after.

I love the way everyone seems to have believed negative reviews without question!
Some of the points raised range from Sinestro's make up being bad... which it obviously isn't. Ryan Reynolds playing the same part as always and comparing him to Robert Downey Jnr... now he is a good actor, but let's face it he's guilty of the very same thing... he played Sherlock Holmes as Tony Stark for gods sake!
Regardless of the reviews I will be there this weekend and I fully expect my experience of the movie will be different to the reviewers. It's all personal taste - the critics raved about Thor, but I thought it was average at best, and had far sillier concepts than GL ever had... I mean, really... a rainbow bridge?

What is it with everyone and Nathan Fallon?! He's been living in mediocrity forever.

How dare you, sir!

Watch any one of the following and you'll understand why he's so freaking awesome (Not to meantion that he seems like a cool guy personally):

Firefly (TV Series)
Serenity
Slither
Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog
Castle (TV Series)

oh...and watch the Firefly outtakes on youtube because they're hilarious.

Sad but probably true. I think with this film this property there really is no rebooting. GL is at the height of his popularity in comics (which thanks to this movie is probably coming to an end because people love to tear things down) and from what it seems so far they stayed more or less true to the concept. Is WB going to risk millions of dollars for someone to execute it better, I doubt it. This may very well be a situation that WB put all there eggs in the basket and they may very well have to make a sequel if this film manages to break even.

Only stuff from Johns I've really cared for were his Hawkman and original JSA runs, and the latter he had help on initially from Goyer and Robinson. His Hawkman run especially, though, didn't contain much exposition past the first issue, and he even did some self-contained one- and two-issue storylines, effectively negating my two biggest problem's with the man's writing. I've also heard good things of his Stars and S.T.R.I.P.E., but I've never read it myself.

Everything else from him that I have read, however, just doesn't do much for me. Again, I don't think he's awful or anything, but in my mind he's simply a serviceable writer at best. And this isn't a bandwagon thing for me, where I just want to knock the giant off the top of his mountain now that he's scaled it; I've never understood the hype surrounding Johns.

I quite enjoyed X-3 but worse than wolverine? I'll believe that when I see it, and I will see it even with all the bad reiviews.

Worse than Wolverine, I'll have to see it to believe it...(this coming from someone who loves all things X)

...Still going to see it, I'll be the judge myself...LOL...
