The Official Green Lantern Review Thread - Part 2

Which is a sign that the problem is with what's there, not what isn't.....for any movie, really. Now...if they somehow approached the story in a way that it needs long transitional scenes that bog down the pacing (which is almost always why scenes are cut) to make sense...then there are some big problems with it that including those scenes won't cure.

Well those extra scenes might add more elements to movie. Some complaints are not enough Sinestro , Green Corps , and a reason to care about Hammond before the transition. Those scenes might not "cure" the film but could make it better for some.

I think this is the best answer to any questions in regards to a sequel.

"It's over, I'm sorry but it's over."

Hey Batman Forever got a sequel as did Fantastic Four as did Superman 3 as did PUNISHER get a reboot and doesn't Ghost Rider have a sequel on the way?

Green lantern was terrible first time i slept trough a movie since Twilight

First Facebook status I saw tonight hahahaha

Reboot, sure. Sequel no.

1.) Batman Forever was an already third installment in a series with two movies that were received positively before it, and it's Batman.

2.) Fantastic Four and both Punisher films didn't cost $300 mil and were better received.

So will it get a sequel? No.

A reboot sure, maybe.

Trust me, more doesn't always equal better. What it may include may not be worth the screentime and real estate it occupies if it slows the pace even more. If they thought it would make it better, they'd still have it...unless they were somehow forced to get rid of it for some reason, which we don't know.

ugh, this movie was awful. im actually frustrated by how bad it was.

Harry just posted a positive review on AICN. It's a somewhat biased review I feel because he kind of latched on to the GL mythology to inspire his own weightloss and since it was a success I don't think he could bring himself to really hate the movie, but hey. We need a little positive bias like that I say. With the way the movie is getting bashed.

I remember his review for Spider-man 3. He tried really hard not to bash the film and wound up barely writing anything ,lol. He did go into some detail here so I think he probably genuinely enjoyed it. I don't know why exactly but I'm rooting for this film. Maybe because so many are bashing it but it seems they did try to be faithful so I can't hate it yet.

I liked it a lot. It should have been longer and I didn't expect the Green Lantern Corps to be almost nonexistent. The after credits scene was awesome.

the after credits scene made zero sense what so ever.

the reason why sinestro wanted to use the yellow ring in the first place was because he believed it was the only way to defeat fear/parallax, because it seemed to him that will power wasnt strong enough to do it. but hal clearly proved that will power is stronger than fear. meaning, there is no reason what so ever for sinestro to try and wield the yellow ring. its power was just proven inferior.

the first and 2nd act were a mess. It's not that it was bad, it was poorley structured. The story was there just.... out of order. Nothing was building towards anything and because of it the character growth was non-existant. And parallel action, as perfected by Nolan, was used more as a crutch here than a storytelling technique.

HOWEVER - from the moment Hal gives his speech to the guardians and from that point on = the movie was INCREDIBLE.

I had it at a D and the 3rd act totally pushed it up to a B -. Hal felt as if he was a character and the action was on point for sure. Superman should take note for 3rd act battle scenes.

If Ghost Rider can get a sequel this films still has a chance.

Also I know it's supposedly a reboot but it's the same actor reprising the role.

green lantern was the opposite of thor... in how thor had an uninteresting story/mythology but interesting characters.. this movie had a cool sci-fi setup but the most unoriginal and boring characters

it was all a script problem and nothing else imo

We have to stop justifying sequels to bad movies with other sequels to other bad movies...there are no positives in it, yo? :O

It's like saying we should legalize drugs because alcohol is legal...as if the joys of alcohol abuse and drunk driving just aren't enough. :oldrazz:

So...I just got back...and what the hell kinda movie did the critics see? Seriously this should be in the upper 60s, at the very least.

It's not perfect, and coulda been longer, but damn...this was a good movie.

Some people one these boards argued it did when an extended cut of Daredevil was released.

Perspective, Ghost Rider cost 110 mil and made 228 mil back.

GL cost $300 mil and needs to make that back and then some with an even worse rating. I don't think it'll be able to do that.

We'll find out for sure once it's released if audiences connect more with the film than critics did but I find it doubtful that it'll connect to the point where it can make back it's budget let alone make more than that.

hal's speech to the guardians was stupid, and their reaction was nonsensical.

hal gets a b.s. pep talk from his girlfriend, and he suddenly has everything figured out and giving the guardians speeches on humanity and trying to tell them what they're feeling and why they're feeling it when he actually has no idea what he's talking about and has zero reason to be saying these things....especially to the guardians whom he's never even met yet he's telling them that they're afraid of being afraid?

and the guardians, who created the GL corp to protect the galaxy, for no reason are willing to sacrifice all of earth? why? billions of years of intelligence has given them what possible reason to sacrifice earth? because they're biding their time to confront parallax? he'll be easier to defeat once he sucks all the fear out of earth? their response makes no sense at all.

Was it me or did Oa suffer the same problem that Asgard had in Thor. You know..the Japanese RPG city theory: Beautiul aerial shots if a big city only to be restricted to a few sets and characters.

It might happen though. Not sure this movies is terrible. I am worried but in some case the hatred gets overblown. Some critics did bash Thor.. clearly not as much but after seeing that and really enjoying it I still have some hope.

Well, fire down any reason I have for why people are looking down on it, fact is it was fine and I enjoyed. People are just too damn picky. There are FAAAARRRRR worse comics films then this. Hokey, space, writing, characters...whatever, I didn't expect much of that anyway so the I wasn't let down. The film could have easily been worse. I don't get why people want every damn comic film to be absolutely perfect, then rip it apart cause they didn't think a few things were right. WB had 4 writers on this so it was bound to get a lost little, but it was good enough.

I really hate this mentality. It's basically saying "I enjoy **** movies".

Have you seen it yet? If you haven't, I get the feeling that even when you do you're going to defend the ever-living crap out of it like your life depended on it. Probably will be the most tainted review ever. I can't picture you writing an honest review if it turns out you actually deep down inside don't like it.

Oh definitely.

I saw it. It didn't.

Again, this is all reaching for contributing factors outside of the core problem...which is right up there on the screen. A movie like Aliens had scenes cut for most likely the same creative reasons that they were cut from GL or any other movie....yet you're not left wondering about them with a movie like Aliens because...Aliens is actually a good story/movie overall...which is what makes the difference when all's said and done.

Ok here it is.

As much as I enjoyed the action in this film, THERE WAS NO SENSE OF CORRELATION in the story through out the entire film, I felt sometimes things were just happening just because. The direction of Martin Campbell was pretty great visually and so were the performances, but boy did the writing bring this movie down.

I was disappointed with the lack of Green Lantern Corp, they just felt so underused, but when it was about the Green Lantern moments that's when the movie was it best. Specially Sinestro and the interaction with the elders.

The 3rd act is the best part of the film. When Hal starts the oath while stopping Paralax in the middle of the city was probably my favorite moment. One of the best in comic book movies.

Wich makes it even worse, because you can feel this movie had so much potential and yet it feels so disjointed. It felt rushed, badly written, and just complete bad pacing.

That's called fan service and blatant attempts to set up a sequel. Even if it doesn't make any narrative sense.
