A good film?

I hate that excuse "Well what did you expect, it's only a superhero movie".

Seriously, what kind of attitude is that? So these movies get a free pass even if they're steaming piles simply because they are superhero movies?
I thought it was a great film and i had a great time watching it so your points make no sense to me. Too bad you didnt enjoy it.

You know what would've been a great well to set up Sinestro as some one who will one day defect? Having him say "screw you!" to the Guardians, recruiting any willing Lanterns, and fighting the greatest threat the universe has ever seen. Then you've got something for him to actually do, it would make his eventual shift to the dark side more in character (and less of a slap in the face), and we could've gotten a battle that was actually on a cosmic scale. I'd have kicked him in the nuts with a giant green foot after seeing him show up only after it was safe.

They're fanboys what do you expcect? the whole movie could be Hal reading the news paper, eating macaroons and some people here would defend it.

That would be a fresh approach to a superhero movie.

:funny:

In all fairness they're entitled to their opinion but even as a big Dragonball/Z fan I still ended up calling Dragonball:Evolution for the piece of **** it was and I followed that production through and through. When you love a property you hope for the best not just accept the lowest common denominator and run with it.

Exactly. Accepting mediocrity is doing the property a disservice. Why? Because the film makers will think they've got nothing to improve on.

A real fan can admit when the film is bad.

Disappointed.

Went in thinking that there's no way it's as horrendous as the critics are saying. And I was right. However that doesn't mean it was a good movie, simply not as bad as it was made out to be.

I was BORED. Particulary the scenes in Earth. Not an easy thing for me to say for a superhero movie but it just seemed like it dragged on to no end. Too much dialogue and exposition and simply 'okay' action sequences. Oa made the movie worthwhile but it was too short I mean c'mon now, Hals first (and only) day of official Green Lantern training is relegated to a 10 minute 'sparring' session with Kilowag and Sinestro?

Too much focus on his relationship with Carol. I think she probably had just as much, if not more screentime than Sinestro. These scenes really brought the movie down. Just too many of them. By my memory, I count 6.

The best friend was a complete waste of space. Contributed absolutely nothing to the story other than a completely redundant scene of him "wanting to see it". :whatever:

Again, it wasn't as bad as I had anticipated, but that's not exactly a compliment.

5/10

That seems to be about the average consensus. Not sure what you mean about the reviews making it out to be worse than it is. the score on rotten tomatoes is 4.4.

And I agree about it being boring. The runtime was so short, but it felt longer than the dark knight, a movie that seemed to whiz by.

They should have had a good portion of the movie on Oa. Show Hal actually staying there or something. Interacting with the other Corps members in the canteen or whatever. Show him training, then going on actual missions to "pop his cherry" so to speak.

A 10 minute training montage, if that's what it is, is unnacceptable and shows that the marketing campaign and all the interviews were flat out lying to all of us.

Yeah, what happened to the 50/50 split between Earth and the cosmic that Ryan Reynolds was talking about? That so didn't happen.

I dont even bother looking at that...just the percentage and the implications that it's as bad as F4 and Daredevil, in which case I wholeheartedly disagree.

GL isn't 'that' bad.

Yeah, you pretty much saw every space part in the previews. It's a joke. The first trailer was the most accurate representation of the movie, and when they saw the reaction, they figured they would just change up the focus of marketing to try and fool us.

Oa is so briefly in the movie, and it's given no culture or personality. It feels lifeless and barren.

I just realized that when GL: First Flight came out the knock on it was that it focused on Oa and outer space too much and now the movie comes out and it's the other way around.

You could have had great scenes with Hal interacting with all the aliens. The aliens resenting him for being a human from that "mudball" Earth.

Then perhaps going out on actual training missions, proving his worth a little bit.

The Directors Cut of Daredevil is awesome!!! Apart from that god awful playground fight scene which for some reason wasn't cut...

Yea, I kinda always had a gut feeling that the first trailer was the real representation of the movie. The WB realized it was hated, then changed up the marketing campaign and lied to all of us.

I can't believe what they did though. It's actually nefarious. Saying it's all about Oa and this big cosmic adventure... then Oa and the Corps is featured for about 20 minutes?

Disgraceful.

Just got back from seeing. Thought there was no way it could be as bad as the critics say. I was wrong.

It was just so frickin BORING.

- The editing was laughable. It made no sense. If you want us to care about Hal, spend some time on him.

- Between the trailer, tv spots & 4 minute preview, they pretty much showed us all the Oa footage before you even see the movie. At the end, my wife couldnt figure out why they didnt spend more time on Oa, we all know what Earth it like, but she was more interested in Oa.

- Kilawogs training lasted for maybe 2 minutes, yet at the end he remarks "I know how to train them". Huh? You bark out a few cheesy lines & you call that training?

- The corps. Again, they were just in the background. They all stood tough, but they didnt actually do anything.

- The music/ score was ****. 'nuff said.

- Above all, it was BORING. I could watch a whole Batman movie with just Bruce Wayne & no suit, because the character is interesting. As a HUGE GL fan, no matter how much I wanted to like Hal, but I had no reason to.

They was just so disappointing. My wife, who hadnt read any reviews & knows nothing about GL - except that I propose to her with a plastic GL ring ;) walked out saying the exact same thing as all the reviews. She wanted to see more of Oa, she wanted to see ALL the lanterns go up against Parallax, but ultimately she was just bored.

I went into this with an open mind, but no matter how much I love the character, I couldnt enjoy this. I thought FF was a more enjoyable. At least it had heart. GL has no heart or soul. It has nothing. There were no Hero moments or parts where you wanted to cheer. Nothing.

Save your money & re-watch the 4 minute preview instead- its better than the movie.

Yeah, I think every Batman fan has admitted how bad Batman & Robin and Catwoman were.

Hell, I doubt many Superman fans have problems admitting the awfulness of Superman 4: The Quest For Peace and Supergirl.

And Steel...... well. I don't even know if Steel has any fans to begin with. o_O

But really? Can Green Lantern be that bad? I doubt it. I'm going to check it out tomorrow for myself and say how I feel.... and i'm someone who never read any Green Lantern comics. My only knowledge of the character comes from the DC animated shows and movies from Bruce Timm... so this will be an interesting point of view!

I'm probably not going to like this movie but I'm compelled question some of the critiquing.

earth bound super heroics don't seem to hurt Ironman, batman, superman, spiderman, spiderman 2, xmen....etc.
potential is potential but it just seems more fair to just a film on what it does as opposed to what you want it to do I think.

Again major wasting if you ask me, but Kilowog might just be referring to the specifics he trained him on probably coming in handy. I recall batman begins having a similar revelation about his training during the 3rd act.

I also have a feeling they wanted to keep the corps out of this origin story. I mean how great a hero would Iron man be if he had a whole corps show up and fight with him? Batman? Superman?

I honestly think they should have showed up but hal should have saved the day a la the FREAKING AWESOME ANIMATED MOVIES I mean come on wb:doh:

This I disagree with fully though. In the comics batman sells the product through and through. He's insanely compelling and his prowess levels are that of sherlock holmes mixed with the great inventors, mixed with the greatest fighters and so on. He's insanely obsessed and I can go on and on about what makes the written character cool especially when Morrison is on him.

The movies like the older animated series is sold on plot and villains imo. Bale isn't the bale of equilibrium or American psycho, he just a guy that wants change and his pals are around to give him everything he needs. Long story short, I personally couldn't watch a movie about bruce wayne with no suit in the nolan verse, he's really not all that compelling without the awesome plotting built around him. Tony Stark however sure.

Your review however does confirm a lot of the fear I have for this film.

Would have been awesome if a large chunk of the core were possessed and attacked earth and it was up a few key players to save the save and build a bond because of it. I'm sure the action would be alot more compelling to boot.

The end credit sequence is online at youtube if people wanna check it out before it gets taken off.
so let me see if i get this right. i am reading for 2 days that there was not a lot of Sinestro in the movie. and now they will not even show the time where SInestro goes from good to bad? so in the sequel he is already a bad guy?

how can this work in the sequel?

and the CGI fingers in clip look very bad. very bad. because they didnt motion captuer the fingers. good job animators from Sony.

Lol well I'll be waiting to see this at the $5 movie theater. Doesnt seem worth the $10.

Damn shame to. And it's funny while there are people going in ready to hate this, there are people going in ready to LOVE it and ignore it's alleged flaws
