I am not as pessimistic as other hypers here. WB will be making other superhero movies. Hollywood is just to low on creativity right now for them not to take advantage of comic book mythology. I believe we will see a Flash movie in the future. However, I don't think they'll announce anything before The Dark Knight Rises and Superman comes out.

Oh, and can we get back to real suits made from fabric from now on please? WITH SHOES!? :)

Which reminds me... do you ever see Hal's green toes in the movie? :D

I am actually a fan of the CG suit concept, it just wasnt executed well

I really like the suit. At least it doesn't have those horrible white elbow length gloves.

[troll]This never would've happened if Hal Jordan stayed dead in the comics. We would've had a Kyle Rayner movie and I bet that would've been uber succesful![/troll]

Just a little bit of my Kyle-love seeping through. :)

great use of the troll function.

i cant believe the idiots actually invested that much and expected it would be that profitable when its an unknown with an unknown name really and already negative feedback from the jump

it was an investment in the franchise, WB is "serious" about DC now that potter is done and marvel is making money

Its not just abourt breakinfeven . If green Lantern sells video games and other merchandise than it can be considered a success even if its slightly in the red . This is a marketing tool to make people aware of it . Than it can be beneficial in the long run . Now if completly bombs its a different story but it doesn't necessarily have to break even

There's a certain silliness factor that I don't think Nolan would allow. No second act Batusi or Batman putting his feet up on Gordon's desk.

I'm uncertain about Captain America though.

they need to eliminate camp completely from the comic book film world and have very little humor. The books should not even be called comic books anymore as they aren't humor based anymore.

if u notice most these movies attempt to propell humor from X Men all the way to the recent GL. The Dark Knight had absolutely no indication of humor in the trailer and the humorous moments were to benefit characterization and not the audience to laugh out loud. The pencil trick with Joker was funny but not because Nolan thought, this will make the audience laugh, but because this is after all a character called the JOKER.

Too much humor can ruin a super hero movie. They need to be handled as if they are in an oscar race as the books are of that caliber as far as story telling etc. I dont know why they still seem to think kids need to be catered to the most as that was NOT the case with The Dark Knight AT ALL!!!!!! yet its their number one money maker. They should hire crews that have either been nominated for an oscar before or close as that would make the genre get taken far more seriously

My Review

I don't see why this movie is any worse than Thor or Fantastic Four?

THE ACTING

Ryan Reynolds has very little to work with but he is fine in the role. He is charming and funny and so gets the job done. Blake Lively, despite some clunky moments and the fact that she is miscast, does just fine in her role. Tim Robbins and Angela Bassett are wasted and do nothing special with their roles. Peter Sarsgard is terrible and over the top in the worst way as Hector Hammond. The big head effects don't help, at all.

THE SCIRPT/PLOT

Completely derivative to say the very least. The screenplay is nothing but a mash up Iron Man and Spider-Man and thats just dumb because those scripts aren't the best part of those films. I love Spider-Man and enjoy Iron Man but I wouldn't call their scripts amazing. You'd think that the 500 screenwriters on Green Lantern would have copied amazing scripts if they were going to copy anything but they didn't. Like Thor the movie doesn't have enough charm to overcome this huge fault. The reason why Hal gives up early on is vague and ridiculous to be honest and just felt like something the movie had to do. It's wasn't organic in the slightest. The sub villain Hector Hammod is writen quite poorly and I wouldn't have b**ched quite so much if the performance had been better but it wasn't. The biggest problem is the emotions aren't even remotely genuine. They are there because thats what script o-matic said needed to be there.

THE DIRECTION

Fine but nothing too interesting. It was workman like directing but then again thats pretty much this director in a nutshell. Some cool parts of action scenes but nothing as energetic and well done as X-Men First Class but better than Thor's.

THE VISUALS

Very nice looking visuals in general but the movie does have too much CGI and that CGI is very, very clunky at least 40% of the time. I'm always of the mindset that this much CGI is bad because it makes you feel like you are watching a cartoon and well, you are because it is largely animated. Still it was fun seeing big planets and alien creatures.

IN CONCLUSION

The movie is dumb but mostly entertaining. It's not the worst thing around and isn't any worse than Thor. Despite a good lead performance Ryan Reynolds is let down but a bland script, so-so direction and two s**tty villains. It's not a good idea to make your main villain a cloud with a face in it and it's another bad idea to make your sub villain a big headed guy who is spouts out bad dialogue (which is nothing special in every single comicbook movie in the first place) while controlling things with his mind. "My, what lame villains you have!" "The better to annoy you with my dear."

Unlike the critics I walked out of it with my religion in tact and had a pretty fun time despite the nature of the film.

6.5 or 7/10

Don't spend full price on it. X-Men First Class this is not.

Which is a good thing, they just need figure out the correct formula and components for success.

Well that's what pisses me off. Seems they've put more effort into marketing and merchandise than the actual film itself.

Here we go....

the "I'll be making movies later on that'll show all of you!" guy.

Forget about Black Panther though...make us a sick Dr. Fate film and you'll have my respect.

But in other news...I watched the movie...don't know what to say though. It's like, it wasn't THAT bad, but then it wasn't THAT good either. Obviously not the best CBM I've seen this year by far. Maybe after a second time through I'll have a definite opinion on the movie, but even that's not a good sign. It'll, I think, for surely get a sequel, but who knows if WB will want to keep Campbell or get someone else, or even ask for new writers as well.

I'm an african and feel black people get no justice on film besides Blade and even that couldnt do a good trilogy so I honestly feel the vision i have for the panther will blow them away. Of course with creative freedom

For those who have watched it, should I go for 3D or 2D experience? 3D where i live is only $6.75 matinee

Capone's review over at AICN is pretty good. He demolishes the weak excuses apologists are giving it, such "what were you expecting" and "it wasn't perfect." He totally eviscerates those lame platitudes.

Which is a good thing, they just need figure out the correct formula and components for success.

The problem is, Marvel having licensced many of it's properties away actually ended up working in it's favor. The outside studios took the financial risk if those films flopped and Marvel was able to sit back and take notes for a decade on what does and does not work when adapting superhero comics to film. Then they were able to come out of the gate swinging with their own movies, having learned the painful lessons that others had to endure. They turned a weakness into a strength. I must say, it was quite a smart plan.

But WB/DC doesn't have that luxury. They take the hits if their films fail and it's a question how much they can endure while figuring out their own formula.

Agreed on the later, disagree on the former, but I already know I'm in the minority on that one.

Watchmen is my favourite comic book movie ever made, and I've seen pretty much all of them. B89 is a close second, though.

My review:

Green Lantern is the best superhero movie since X-Men: First Class

Has any other superhero movie come out between Xmen and GL? :oldrazz:

I do prefer serious but they should inject bits of humor. The scene in TDK where Bale says hes gonna tell the world it was all Alfred's idea is hilarious.

Not every superhero film has to be dark . In Spider-man 2 they were able to use cornball humor and also had some dramatic scenes. If they are going to go the funny route they need to at least find a balance.

I'm kinda annoyed that both Thor and Green Lantern are movies that I won't remember five mintues from now...oh well! Atleast I have X-Men First Class and hopefully Captain America is better.

My Ratings for the movies so far

Thor: 6.5/10
X-Men First Class: 9/10
Green Lantern: 6.5 or 7/10

I'm probably going to end up just totally discounting Thor and GL in the future like I did other films in this genre.

What I think this also empty statement is that the film isn't designated High Art, so it should be given a pass for its shortcomings on elements like plot and character development. My response: ********.

I don't see why this movie is any worse than Thor or Fantastic Four?

I'm glad you liked the movie, but this statement is almost contradictory, because Thor is 1,000,000,000 times better than Fantastic Four, and I'm not saying Thor didn't have problems.

You thought Thor was that bad? I enjoyed it.
