The Official Green Lantern Review Thread - Part 5

And that little something extra is? Or do I not want to know?

So, I've finally watched the Movie last night and I didn't think it was as bad as everyone kept saying. It certainly wasn't the best, but also not really terrible. It was ok.

The nitpicks I have for Green Lantern, are about the same ones I had for Thor. Like the fact that we got too much of earth or that there were a bit too many humorous moments, when it probably would have been better to play it straight.

What really annoyed me though, were most of the actors. They just really weren't all that good. I liked the bit with Hal's family, but the little kid was atrocious. Reynolds' performance was good and I loved Mark Strong as Sinestro. But the rest? Meh. And the script could have been better too.

Green Lantern has lots of potential, just get a better director and a whole new supporting cast next time.

Just seen movie. Surprise I was to find out it's a decent movie with good action. Green Lantern part the best. Script needed more work. But decent way to spend some time. Ryan Reynolds did good. B.

I agree with the previous few posters here. After reading the amount of whining this film has gotten here I thought I would hate it. Well I did not. Sure it has problems, like how it sometimes feels that it has been cut together quickly in the last minute, to make it shorter, and also that Hector Hammond feels a bit useless for the most part. Another problem is clearly that WB marketed the space aspects and the GL Corps part heavily, even if they hardly are in the movie. That said, I still enjoyed it, enjoyed the performances of Reynolds,Strong, Lively and almost everyone in the cast. I thought Livelys character was a much better written "superhero girlfriend" then what we usually get. The suit looked cool, as did the constructs, and the film had a few awesome moments. I enjoyed this much more then what I thought I would. Will definetly get the DVD.

as a rating I probably would give it like 5,5 or 6 of 10.

Finally saw it a couple of hours ago.
I agree on what many people have said since the release of the film in the US. It's not that good. However, I found bits of it where I thought there was an awesome movie somewhere waiting to come out. Sadly, it wasn't the case.

What I really really liked were the ring constructs, it brings something truly unique to the world of superheroes. It makes the action scenes completely unpredictable. You never know what is going to come out from Jordan's imagination. I would have explored all that, everytime he used the ring I was fascinated by it.

Finnaly the movie arrives in my country!

I will translate the review what originally i have post in the blog what i wrote, i will update with link later:

The main issue of the film is how we deal with fear, and in the acceptance of our weaknesses we become stronger. This make a great connection with the magazines that are being written for years by people like Geoff Johns and Peter Tomasi. Assume that we have no fear makes us weak, but if you give in to fear this destroy us from within. Having feelings is good because it helps to look at our choices without them turning over the slave it.

Sinestro do not believe when the GL Corps, together, can not defeat Parallax, and along with the complete omission of the Guardians, is created the first ring of yellow energy in an attempt to use fire against fire. Hector Hammond remains distant and alienated from everything and everyone, and not seek to fulfill their desires, such as revealing his love for Carol Ferris but is too passive to take action against what he doesn't liked . When Parallax infects him, all the inner hatred is exposed, as well as their new telepathic abilities. Hal, on the fear to be committed and hurt those who love him, keeps people away from it because of his arrogance, a shield of his personality what made nobody been involve with him. With the ring, he is forced to make choices that reconnects with people he loves and accept that he are afraid to stand in the shadows (and failures) of his father forever.

About Parallax, the scene of him attacking Coast City is wonderful, because it shows his main influence for the concept of the film (the smokescreen that has taken New York in September 11) and shows him as being of solid energy, which can be shared and expanded, and thus grounds for a piece of it (which works like a bacterium) causes damage, beyond even be able to track your energy. But not only the physical pain he is capable, but Parallax is like a devil talking in his ear, discouraging you, feeding your spirit weakness of mind. And also suggests that there may be several Parallaxes (that word exist ?) at the time that the a body is possessed by a yellow energy , maybe one day we will see Hal Jordan as Parallax too.

About the cast, I was surprised enough with Blake Lively, who was very expressionless in trailers and spots, but in the film is excellent as Carol Ferris, was tender and mature when it has to be. Sinestro is impeccable with Mark Strong, and Peter Saasgard even limited by the disadvantages from the movie which I will speak below, made a very good interpretation as Hector Hammond, being a stalker without self-love within the body of a genius.Ryan Reynolds it is a good choice as Hal Jordan.

Now the bad things of the film. Despite having been exaggerated by many, they exist in the film. The first is that the first act of the film is too rushed. He passes you the basic information about everyone but not the characters deepens as it should, and in the future when the extended version come out on Blu Ray, it seems there was room for it, and finally can show more of this part. Second, the plot of the Ferris Enterprise is solved by very high, it would be better to see Carol Ferris putting their hands on work, showing the real situation of the company.

The third and most aggravating fault is they have not embraced the strangeness about the project. You hardly see the aliens in the movie, you're not going to other planets, does not explore the space. And the movie was sold as a whirlwind of aliens, a space epic adventure, and none of which aliens appears in the film actually doing something, or interacting with Hal. Kilowog and Tomar-Re appears quickly when Jordan is trained and only return in the end the movie. I hope, if the sequence sees the daylight, to keep Hal Jordan in space, because that castrates much to the film's epic scale.

In the end, as we can define the Green Lantern movie? A good movie, bad, average? For me, despite having serious problems, it was a fun experience and an valid adaptation of the character that deserves a second chance on the big screen. Martin Campbell has done a good job, but we need somebody who understands and dip the next movie (if really comes) of the head in a sci-fi universe. I do not think it's better than First Class and Captain America, but still well above the result of Thor.

7.5/8.0 of 10.0

Great review! Agree with everything you said...beside that I enjoyed it more than Captain America (that movie is overrated).

I found the movie to be entertaining and it is not the best super hero movie of this year but still it is decent enough, personally speaking I liked it better than Thor.

I think that there is a scope for movie Sequel, Mark Strong is awsome as Sinestro, it was a bad decision not to give him more screen time in GL, that should be correcter in the seuqel . (If they make one.)

Saw the film tonight, was utterly bored and found myself looking around the net on my ipad more than watching what was going on.
At times it all seemed a little rushed.
Ryan was good, as always, I didn't mind the CGI suit, it suited the character.
Blake was utterly wooden and useless, she might have some good looks but wow she is awful.
The Oa stuff seemed forced in and a little pointless.
Would have liked some nods to Bats and Supes to tie the DC world around it.
Not the worst superhero film I have ever seen but not in the middle either.
4.5/10

I saw the movie yesterday, here in Italy.

Boring, bad. The worst casting of ever. Tim Robbins has to pay some bills? Why is useless, the same for Reynolds, one of the worst actors in this world. A dog. And Sarsgaard?? God, save us. The worst villain in a comic book movie.

I save only Mark Strong. Blake Lively is sexy but useless. Certainly butchered in the editing room, but is really a bad movie.

It's still showing in the UK?

It's sad.

The film had a lot of potential. The pacing is way off. Is Hal trained? Not really. The training begins and then he leaves, some stuff happens that doesn't seem important and then you're watching the climax of the film.

I wanted to like it. I was rooting for it. I'd heard all the negativity and hoped that I could be selfish about the film and enjoy it for myself. That didn't happen. I didn't feel like I'd watched a film. I felt like I'd watched a cut of it with the important bits cut out. The pacing in this film is terrible.

I'm not going to blame Reynolds. He is what he is. Was he right for Hal? Not really. You know what you're getting with Reynolds. The guys in charge know this. That's how they wanted Hal because the role was written like every obvious Reynolds role I've ever seen. He just did what he does. Not his fault.

Bad pace, poor use of story, wrong choices. Just plane bad.

And yes, it's sad.

I'm going to watch First Flight later.

That pun was more epic then the film.

It was subtle, but yeh, I liked it too :D

I liked the film, but definitely wasn't blown away by it. I thought that with the sheer scope of imaginative and creative things you can do with Green Lantern, they didn't grab the bull by the horns quite as well they should have.

I look forward to seeing it on DVD soon for a second viewing, see if it seems better or worse.

There's a director's cut, amIright?

I'm only gonna say it once, some Green Lantern fans need to own up to the fact that they are the reason as to why they didn't enjoy the movie. Some of them knew too much before hand and saw too much before hand, they thought they were going to get a perfection adaption (if you ask me), they were wrong.

On a different note, I can't believe how awesome the movie looks on my new LED tv!!!!!!!

Is the DVD / Blu Ray is released ?1?

Fans (mostly who whined a lot and those who were very loudly nit picking every little detail, did discourage many other non GL comic book fans) I know that the movie was not very good but many fans chose to highlight the negative aspects very vocally.

Fans have right to protest if their character is not properly handled but it was certainly odd to see that many non GL fans were acting as authority on what should constitute as a good GL movie.
