Which then leads to the question of why you posted in here:huh:

This could easily be a single huge movie or they can suck as much out of it and make it a trilogy. Either way, the biggest game opening of all time with its huge fanbase deserves a movie. This thing would easily turn a profit. Hell, they make more stupid and idiotic movies...why have second thoughts about Halo for f***s sake.

It's an absolute shame a huge studio has the rights to something like this but instead will put the movie on the backburner.

Blomkamp had an interesting vision for Halo with the whole Saving Private Ryan kind of realism but it definitely wouldn't have maximized profit potential. While I think he had a great idea, I've always imagined it more as a space fantasy like Star Wars or Starship Troopers.

Halo is more gritty than Star Wars and with less emphasis on polar opposites (good vs bad). Starship troopers was a good movie with tons of grit and teeth clenching gore. It just still felt a bit cartoonish. With what Blomkamp did, it showed me the potential in this series and making a movie that shows an all out war between humans and invaders. The only trouble this movie could have is with the inclusion of the flood. That IMO would be a very hard task to deal with in making the story and the flood characters not cartoonish or dumb looking. But all things aside, this movie had huge potential but it was sadly set aside for whatever reason.

MS "already in talks" to continue Halo film
Monday 29-Oct-2007 3:06 PM Preparation work is continuing on Peter Jackson's Halo film, says representative
Following a swift withdrawal by film studios Fox and Universal, Microsoft is already in talks with other distribution projects to continue development of the Halo film, says Peter Jackson's representative Ken Kamins.

Prep work on the Halo film continues, Kamins tells Variety, mostly thanks to the involvement of exec producers Jackson and Walsh. Most of the pre-production is being done at their visual effects studios in New Zealand, Weta Digital and Weta Workshop, so there will be no stalling.

Both of the studios who backed the flick abruptly pulled out. Rumours say the studios were concerned over a budget rising above $135 million, but Kamins says disputes came after Fox and Universal tried to lower Microsoft's profit margines.

"What happened was this: Universal, on behalf of both studios, asked for a meeting with the filmmakers just prior to the due date of a significant payment," says Kamins.

"Basically, they said that in order to move forward with the film, the filmmakers had to significantly reduce their deals. They waited until the last minute to have this conversation. Peter and Fran, after speaking with their producing partners and with Microsoft and Bungie, respectfully declined."

Speculation also centred around the Halo film's newcomer director Neill Blomkamp, who's already filmed several Halo 3 shorts.

"Everybody is supremely confident in Neal," Kamins said. "Part of what excited Peter and Fran was Neal's vision. We're very confident this film will move forward with the creative partners intact, who will take the film to production."

The Halo shorts looked bloody great to us, and who knows; maybe they'll help the Microsoft's flick actually come to life this time. It'd be a shame to waste those real life Warthogs

I really want to see a Halo movie, but honestly I can live without one. I just think there's too much potential for Hollywood to not "get it" with this franchise and turn it in to something really bad. So I'd rather not see it all than end up seeing a Starship Troopers knock off or worse. Not that Starship Trooper was bad, but it's not Halo, it's not the same feel or attitude at all.

If they do end up making the movie I really, really, really hope it's based off the first book "The Fall of Reach" instead of the 1st game. The book IMHO tells a much better story than the game and is more of a origin story.

The Halo Combat shots proved that if given the opportunity and a massive budget, Neil Blogkamp will bring the house down with a Halo film.

Exclusive: Halo Movie Has Reach!
THIS IS NOT AN APRIL FOOL’S JOKE!

I REPEAT THIS IS NOT AN APRIL FOOL’S JOKE! I **** YOU NOT!

A LATINOREVIEW EXCLUSIVE!

All has been quiet on the HALO movie front lately. Last we heard, the Halo movie came together with Bungie, Peter Jackson, producer Scott Stuber, Fox, and Universal. The script went through at least three writers. I did the first script review of Alex Garland’s draft then D.B. Weiss came aboard, and most recently Josh Olson. Neil Blomkampf was hired to direct and did direct several great Halo short films. But then the plug was pulled last summer and the movie has been in a holding pattern ever since.

Till now…

In an effort to get the ball rolling again, I just learned that big time G.I. JOE screenwriter STUART BEATTIE has written a spec screenplay called HALO: FALL OF REACH, and it's based on the best selling novel of the same name by Eric Nylund.

I hear Beattie is a huge Halo fan, and like most Halo fans, has been frustrated at the progress for HALO to reach the silver screen…

…so Stuart took action and did something about it on his own in between writing assignments.

A spec screenplay is when you write a script on your own without being paid a dime for it in the hopes that it could sell hence “spec” or “speculative.”

Stuart is in that top tier of professional screenwriters that get “commissioned” by studios to write scripts. The top screenwriters don’t spec nor need to spec anymore. They get the big money paying gigs. Stuart was commissioned to write SPY HUNTER, SPLINTER CELL, and GEARS OF WAR for various studios. His G.I. JOE script is the one that got Paramount to greenlight the $170 million dollar movie which is shooting now.

HALO: FALL OF REACH is a labor of love by Beattie in the hopes of finally getting the movie made.

So what is the script about? Below is what my source tells me…

The script is, first and foremost, a character-driven story about a soldier named John who was kidnapped or "conscripted" by the UNSC when he was just six years old, and then brutally trained to become an elite Spartan warrior known as Master Chief 117.

The script then takes us through the horrific first contact with the Covenant hordes on the doomed colony world of Harvest, and then climaxes with the spectacular fall of the UNSC forward base on Reach, during which every other Spartan is slaughtered.

The script also gives detailed outlines for the second movie, HALO: RISE OF THE FLOOD, which takes place entirely on the Halo ringworld, and the third and final movie, HALO: BATTLE FOR EARTH, which roughly follows the events of Halo 3, the game.

One cool advantage of this first script is that (like the shark in JAWS) you don't even see the Covenant until halfway through the movie. And because all the creatures are CGI creations, this cuts the budget down dramatically and makes a first Halo movie that much more viable. For Halo fans, it's like the prequel that provides all the answers to questions they've thought about for years. For non Halo fans, it's an exciting action movie that provides a clear, concise introduction to a world five hundred years in the future with relatable characters and a terrifying alien menace.

So there you have it folks! If there is anyone at Microsoft or Bungie reading this, call CAA, get the damn script and at least take a read! You guys certainly have nothing to lose by taking a look because the guy’s track record speaks for itself.

If you’re a HALO fan, harass Microsoft to take action because from what I gathered here in Hollywood, unfortunately the guys that are seriously cock blocking the HALO movie from getting made are those control freaks at Microsoft.

Again what does Microsoft have to lose by taking a look at a script written by a big time Hollywood screenwriter who decided to take a crack at HALO on his own?

Nada!

I will be following this story closely as more develops along with trying to obtain the script myself like I did with Alex Garland’s draft back in the day so stay tuned.

Good: an origin story. None of this MC "as most important supporting character".

Cool, hope its get made, I'm not a fan of any of the games frankly I hate them but for some reason I find the appeal of a film very appetising.

this is the only video game i want to be made into a movie....hope it happens

Chances are, when on April first you read "This is not an April Fools Prank," it is.

Maybe it won't be. This will likely end Peter jackson's involvement though.

why would it end Peter Jackson's involvement? Weta and Bungie have a great relationship. it's not as if Stuart Beatie writing the script is going to change that. if anything, his outline will probably catch PJ's eye since it makes more sense and treats the franchise with more respect than the previous script.

Exactly. It's down to whether or not Peter Jackson or the studio likes it. I'm almost sure this isn't the first time they've heard of Beattie's spec screenplay, anyway.

Okay, so i finally downloaded Bloomkamf's (spelling) Halo 3 shorts... sweet jesus I was so impressed. It just makes me sad this isn't in production still... and personally I hate the idea of a Fall of Reach film... I don't want to see that. I want to see a movie entitled Halo about a freaking HALO! Just a little... I'm still shuddering over this turn of events.

Anyway, yeah Bloom's version good, fall of reach bad.

When i think big first person shooter movie, i think Doom :(

First person shooters don't lend themselves particularly well to movies, since for the most part they're all based on recycled ideas from 80's sci-fi and action movies.

Except for Half-Life, though. That's one FPS that actually broke the mold by creating a unique and new mythology that felt fresh and original.

I agree Half-Life 2 anyway is basically a Game & a Movie all-in-one. Halo might work since its got a richer story & a well laid out story when compared to most FPS's.

I think the reason that most first person shooter games to movies do bad is that the studios do not understand that what makes a video game great and what makes a movie great are two very different things. To make a video game into a movie successfully you have to actually get rid of the first person shooter aspect altogether and also find supporting characters that people care about... not saying it's an easy process but understanding it is.

Exclusive: Halo Fall Of Reach Concept Art!

The HALO movie in it’s current incarnation, the one that we all know publicly about, the one involving FOX/UNIVERSAL, Peter Jackson, Neil Blomkamp, with the script by Garland and rewritten by DB Weiss…

…is completely dead in Hollywood. That project will never happen. Everybody involved has already moved on.

But, then we discovered and broke that screenwriter Stuart Beattie decided to do something about it. He started over fresh and wrote a spec script based on the best selling novel HALO: FALL OF REACH.

Halo: The Fall of Reach is a 2001 science fiction novel by Eric Nylund based on the Halo series of video games and acts as a prequel to Halo: Combat Evolved, the first game in the series. It is set in the fictional Halo universe, taking place in the 26th century across several planets and locations. The novel details the events which led up to the game and explains the origins of the SPARTAN II super soldiers, narrating the story of the series protagonist, the Master Chief.

Stuart Beattie’s script is very real and out there floating around in Hollywood folks. How real? Well, there has been concept art made by conceptual artist Kasra Farahani (WOLF MAN, HANCOCK, SPIDERMAN 3) for certain scenes of the new HALO: FALL OF REACH script as part of an eventual presentation to Microsoft. From what I’m told, the presentation is very cool!

There are some big time professionals in Hollywood who are also Halo fans that want to see the movie made. I scored five pieces of the concept art and will be releasing them on a weekly basis for the next five weeks. From what I know, this particular scene takes place halfway through the proposed script and yes that’s Master Chief in the middle.

Pretty cool, huh?

Stay tuned as we debut a new piece every Monday. In the meantime you can follow my updates on TWITTER.

Wow! Nice. I really hope they make the film. Big fan of Stuart Beattie.
