UPDATE: Iron Man Teaser Flying Not in Movie?

Source: Variety, Namor
September 15, 2007

UPDATE: Jon Favreau says on his MySpace group that the flying scenes from the teaser are indeed in the movie:

It's in the movie. It's true that the shots were rushed for Comic Con, but the F-22 dogfight has been in the works for over a year and was the furthest along of the film's set pieces. That's how we were able to get it on the screen nearly a year before the premiere.

Here is the original story:

Variety has published a bit of a weird story regarding the Iron Man teaser trailer. It goes like this:

Paramount grounds 'Iron Man'
Superhero flies in trailer but won't in film

The trailer for Paramount's May tentpole "Iron Man" debuted last week, generating buzz among superhero fans.

The trailer features a generous helping of Robert Downey Jr. as sardonic arms dealer turned armored-warrior Tony Stark, glimpses of his armor and an impressive sequence where Iron Man flies, outracing fighter jets.

The sequence had to generate buzz, since that's the only reason it exists. It won't be in the movie. In fact, it wasn't even made for the movie.

A spokesman for Industrial Light & Magic confirms that the flying Iron Man shots are not "finals" (completed, delivered visual effects) and were only made for the film's Comic-Con promo reel.

It sounds to us like Variety is jumping to conclusions on this one. Sure, it might be right that the flying scenes seen in the teaser won't be in the film, but the subtitle "Superhero flies in trailer but won't in film" is probably incorrect. Even the ILM spokesman says the shots are not "finals," meaning the completed shots might still make the film. We'll check with Paramount on this one...

Are they still using the Mandarin?

Mandarin will not be seen in the movie, but his presence will be felt - he is more of a background force, working behind the scenes who will be developed into the main villain for the sequel.

Iron Monger is the villain for the first film, and there are a few shots of him in the trailer. However, he could be working with/for the Mandarin secretly, as in the synopsis for the film it says that Tony Stark uncovers a global threat, so Mandarin could be in China communicating with Iron Monger in the US.

Or Iron Monger could have no links at all to the Mandarin, and just be a stand alone villain. Only time will tell.

Interesting. Maybe we'll see Mandarin in Loki's place in the Avengers movie.

I asked this in another thread, but I figure I'll have a better chance of getting an answer here.

How many times do Iron-Man and Monger fight?

Thanks, just as well actually... I'm one of these a$$holes that can't help but take a peek, and then hates himself once he's in the theatre and knows whats gonna happen.
Its their damn fault I say!!!
They should keep these things top secret, even the fact that they've been filming, up till a few months of releasing it!!!

Does Iron-Man fight anyone else aside from the terrorist when he escapes, and Iron-Monger?

I'm talking like, bank robbers or other terrorist affiliations.

What's the back story of Iron Monger? How does he become a Villian in the Iron Man story?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iron_Monger

Speculation - I suspect both Stane and Raza(the afgani Wong Chu warlord stand in) are in cahoots with the Mandarin and the abduction of Stark was planned to give each party something they wanted. In Stane's case, that would be control of Stark Industries.

Iron Man director Jon Favreau gave MTV an update about the anticipated movie:

There's a lot of effects work that's going to be happening in the next six months. The movie is pretty much going to be everything that it's going to be by the end of January. Because so much of it is animated and CGI you have to turn it over and let those people do their work on it. So we'll be done in about a month with all the big creative decisions. And then the rest of it becomes about scoring and sound design.

There's more at the link above, from the running time to the possible cameo

How is Tony Stark in The Incredible Hulk?

Ain't It Cool News has posted a rumor about how the Iron Man/The Incredible Hulk cross-over might work (Possible Spoiler Ahead!):

So the scene that was shot was for the Hulk with General Thunderbolt who is very important to the Hulk. Anyway, Tony Stark meets with him - which of course is a straight prelude to the Avengers Movie.

Iron Man director Jon Favreau stayed mum on the subject in yesterday's interview with MTV.

Brandweek has posted more details about the upcoming promotions for Iron Man:

There's been strong fanboy buzz on the movie since last summer's Comi-Con, where Downey appeared with director Jon Favreau and castmates Terrence Howard and Gwyneth Paltrow, but the studio intends to take it beyond niche, starting with a splashy Super Bowl ad and extending through broad-based promotions at 6,400 7-Eleven convenience stores and global campaigns with Burger King and Audi. "The partnerships fan out across every demo," said LeeAnne Stables, Paramount's svp-worldwide marketing partnerships. "And they reach consumers in ways and places that the studio marketing can't." Some lessons from the studio's successful Transformers deals from last summer will get a re-do here: Favreau will direct BK's TV ads, as filmmaker Michael Bay did for the robot movie/ burger chain tie-in, and the studio will pack a dedicated Audi Web site with original Iron Man content, to an even greater degree than it did for Transformers ally General Motors.

In related news, Iron Man director Jon Favreau brought the Mark I armor to the 2008 Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas and you can view photos here.
