The Official NPD Monthly Sales Numbers Thread

courtesy of gaf, february npd
1. The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask 3D (3DS) (515,000 copies sold digitally and physically)
2. Evolve (Xbox One, PS4, PC)
3. Dying Light (PS4, Xbox One, PC)
4. Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare (Xbox One, PS4, 360, PS3, PC)
5. Grand Theft Auto V (PS4, Xbox One, 360, PS3)
6. NBA 2K15 (PS4, Xbox One, PS3, 360)
7. Dragon Ball: Xenoverse (PS4, Xbox One, PS3, 360)
8. Minecraft (360, PS3, Xbox One, PS4)
9. The Order: 1886 (PS4)
10. Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate (3DS) (290,000 copies sold digitally and physically)
Nintendo is probably feeling pretty great right now. Zelda, one if its top franchises, outsold everything else in February. That includes two major new releases. This is good news for the company, which is going to release a brand new Zelda for the Wii U later this year that it is positioning as a system-selling game.

The two big new games that Zelda beat are Evolve and The Order: 1886. Evolve came out on Feb. 10, while The Order only had a week of sales after debuting Feb. 20. While both made the top 10, it feels like both didn’t perform as well as they should have. The Order was hammered with critical reviews, which likely hurt its sales.

In terms of surprises, Dying Light, which debuted in January, continues to sell well. The zombie-survival game is performing a lot like developer Techland’s previous game in this genre, Dead Island.
- 395k 3DS family (N3DS, 3DS XL, 2DS, 3DS)
- Playstation 4 best-selling home console
Platform holders typically keep their hardware sales numbers quiet, but Sony once again revealed that PS4 was the top selling system for the month.

“Demand for PlayStation 4 remains incredibly strong in the U.S. as it was No. 1 in hardware and software sales in February, according to the latest NPD report,” a Sony spokesperson said in a statement. “PS4 remains the cumulative leader in hardware sales with more than 20.2 million units sold to consumers worldwide demonstrating the fastest growth in PlayStation hardware history.”

Nintendo shared some its figures as well. In a statement, the company confirmed that all versions of the handheld combined to sell 395,000 units in February.

“The great majority of these sales were New Nintendo 3DS XL systems, which sold 130 percent more units in its initial frame than Nintendo 3DS XL did when it launched on Aug. 19, 2012,” a spokesperson said.

As for the Wii U, the company would only say that “hardware sales have increased by more than 20 percent” so far in 2015 over the same period in 2014.

yeah i'm pretty sure the 3ds also outsold the Ps4. actually it's not that clear.

Wow, Majora's Mask number one. Go Nintendo!

It did well and good for it, but the numbers are a bit misleading. Sale's for that game include digital numbers whereas everything on that list is retail only. MM likely wouldnt be #1 if the digital sales for the other games were counted

No point doing rankings for non like-for-like data.

I meant I don't know what that means, man

It just means similar directly comparable data. So if you rank 2 games don't use lifetime sales for one on all platforms including digital & physical releases, twitter mentions & positive thoughts while for the other you use only sales paid in cash above $40,000 taking place on 48th Feb 2017 between 23.42 and 23.39 that were returned at least 15 times each by each member of The Beatles, the Jackson 5 and the Gone with the Wind cast with the exception of Jermaine Jackson and Ringo Starr.

I'll need some time, but right now I still don't really get it.

Oh don't worry my response at the time was me being a *****e :woot: as I was getting pissed off with "?" or "huh?" rather than actually getting asked a specific question about my posts in quite a few threads at the same time.

Like-for-like just means directly comparable data. So if we want to compare the sales of 2 products we'll use the exact same time period. For eg year to date or sales in 2012 for both, rather than including sales in 2012 for one product and 2012 and the 1st 3 months of 2013 for another. The only reasonably acceptable difference would be lifetime sales but then you'd include the caveat that one released earlier and therefore should have sold more by a certain factor (depending on the nature of sales patterns and volatility for the products).

And I guess more relevant here you'd compare sales for games that either include all physical and digital copies for the games concerned or just physical or just digital. Not much sense in comparing physical and digital combined for one game vs only physical for another. If you want to make a meaningful comparison but don't have enough information to do so you need to strip out info till it is comparable. So strip out digital for physical only vs physical only. And also strip out the relevant platforms when comparing games that released on all platforms to games that released on less than all of them.

Mario Party selling almost 300K in a month in NA alone. Crazy to me how that franchise is still such a seller, and I'm sure it'll be like most Nintendo games and sell continuously for the Wii U's lifespan. Of all the great franchises that Ninty puts out, that one is probably the most tired to me.

What happens in Mario Party? What kind of game is it exactly?

It's a minigame collection with the backdrop of a board game. You move around a board and play competitive minigames through turns to see who wins in the end. They've changed the formula since 8, I think. It used to be each person rolled dice and moved their character individually around the board exactly like playing a board game (such as Monopoly). Now you're in a car and everyone moves at the same time.

I don't know, it's still a fun little experience with a group of friends, but it's like Nintendo's COD, as weird as that it to say. It's not yearly, but it's just something they pump out semi-regularly with little variation.

ah, I get it now. you weren't being a *****e man, maybe I was just taking too damn long to comprehend. when I get a chance I'll read back to what we were discussing so I'll see what I was confused about before & what you were trying to tell me.

That sounds fun! Does seem like a strange one to be a recurring title but I guess people are buying it even if it isn't changing much.

All good.

Btw I didn't realise PS4 Japanese sales had picked up to such an extent (while X1's are still non-existent).

At least the US battle will be interesting unlike the rest of the world where it was over after about 2 days. :woot:
