They have to look at female directors' availability and if their vision is even suitable and compatible with theirs. MacLaren, although a good director, obviously seemed to have a conflicting vision which pulled in an opposite direction. How much are the female directors they approach going to want their own creative control? Will they try to turn WW into something she's not, and will they even get her?

The same could be said for a male director. But they should just get the best person for the job, whether it's a man or woman. If they get a male director here, they can get a female director for one of their male hero movies. That's the way it should be rather than specifically trying to get a female director for a female movie. It just seems like tokenism otherwise.

No it really doesn't. It sounds like "hey maybe we should at least ASK a female director if she's interested in directing the movie about THE iconic female CB character." Otherwise, they get slammed for "not giving female directors a shot." And when they do, they get slammed for "tokenism." Basically, fans will complain no matter what you do.

Well, this news is disappointing, but hopefully they'll find a worthy replacement and this won't turn into a "Thor: The Dark World" situation. I'm sure the anti-DC (and pro-Marvel) trolls are dancing around their mother's basements with glee this morning over this news, never mind the fact that Marvel has gone through this sort of thing twice in recent years, first with the aforementioned Thor disaster and then with Ant-Man (which I really hope turns out to be good). It's not the end of the world, as long as they find someone else who is worthy. One (possible) issue here is that MacLaren had only done television before, and perhaps she had some ideas or demands that are not typical for film. Whatever that might have been, I have no idea. Or perhaps it was something else.

Anyway, onwards and upwards. Who should they pursue now?

Because, as I've said, if they gave female directors a shot in other movies (eg Aquaman, Justice League, Cyborg, Shazam etc) then there wouldn't be a problem with if a male director were to direct WW. Because it wouldn't matter either way and no-one would bat an eyelid because it wouldn't look like that's the only time they're getting a female director, otherwise they never use them at all.

If male or female directors made DC or Marvel movies all the time regardless of whether it was a male or female character, then people wouldn't think it were tokenism. Why is it that the best director for a certain male hero might happen to be a male director whereas the best director for a certain female hero might happen to be female? Was Michelle MacLaren absolutely the best director for WW or was it because she was female?

They should just let Snyder direct all the JL solo movies. I would be for that if that was at all practical. :yay:

Get the Matrix directors. Isn't one of them a female now? You get the best of both worlds.

Everything about this is depressing. Everything.

Before MacLaren was announced, I was rooting for Julie Taymor from the shortlist. I'd still be happy with her, or Alan Taylor (I liked TDW a lot :o)

We don't say his name.

Well there's Rupert Wyatt, too.

Maybe George Miller? I'd fine very happy with Liman because Edge of Tomorrow was the best movie of last summer. Or that guy who directed 300: Rise of an Empire?

Oh please no, not "the guy who directed 300: Rise of an Empire", whose name I'm not even going to look up because that movie was the equivalent of a deep fried turd.

oh damn :wow:

if those rumors are true, then i am kinda glad Maclaren ended up not directing. shame too because she's a talented director but her vision & ideas did not line up with what WB/DB have in mind
Darn you WB :cmad:, we would have loved for WW to have a talking tiger as a sidekick.....:oldrazz:

If she can't work with WB, Marvel is far more strict. Not a lot of creative freedom. So if this turns out to be true, this is clearly a WB thing.

I think there is creative freedom from Marvel, just as long as it fits with everything else. But, if she had a hard time with WB, yeah she'll have a harder time with Marvel.

Well Diana being able to communicate with animals is part of her powers, at least it was pre 52. Also I'm going to throw Edward Zwick's name out there for this.

I'm pretty sure WB is just going to go with another woman director. I assume they'll be looking at some TV directors, not just film.

At some point it's better to just get a director of either sex than specifically trying to get a woman.

That point should have been the start of the process. This whole "needs to be a female director" thing never made sense to me.

Yes, especially after the whole Edgar Wright fiasco, and the T:TDW one as well.

I want someone who can give some good creative input but not have some kind of agenda and try to change WW beyond what she is or use her as a vehicle to make a statement of some kind. Just tell a good story and develop her character. It doesn't have to be about female empowerment.

I don't think female empowerment was an issue. I mean, it's WW. It's right there with the character coupled with the hiring of a female director. WB was already trying to make a statement.

If Faraci's sources are correct, it just simply is some creative choices WB wasn't cool with. Some that even some fans wouldn't have fully embraced. Maybe they didn't want another MOS on their hands (very split reaction).

I don't think it would be too long before we hear who the replacement is. Unless they move the release date but I'm hoping that's not the case.

Well, if they go with another female director, who would you all pick?

Kathryn Bigelow would feel like a godsend, but I don't see that happening.

Julie Taymor would make a visually stunning film, but if MacLaren's ideas were too out-of-the-box for WB, then I can't see Taymor working out.

Everything about this is depressing. Everything.

It's bad enough he's got his hands on Superman and the Justice League. I'm willing to give him the benefit of the doubt for DOJ (because I think Goyer was mostly at fault for MOS), but I don't want him directing anything else right now.

If they do, that'll be three movies in a row.

IDK. It doesn't HAVE to be another female director (although I'd prefer it). My guess is that WB has a shortlist of directors that they were considering, and they'll probably be calling some of them up.

They should be moving the release date anyway. That June release date is no good. WW sshould be moved to April, May, July or August.

That June spot is just bad positioning.

Exactly! This might just be a blessing in disguise.
