The Official Recommendations Thread

Eh, not really a Kirkman fan, ever since he made those comments about people needing to respect Rob Lefield and compared him to Jack Kirby he lost major points with me. But he is a pretty damn good writer, at least so far.

I like Warren Ellis, Dark Blue was awesome I've also heard transmetropolitan rocks hard.

I like the new Thor run but it's not very far along so we'll see. I loved Civil War, thought it was really well done, I liked Planet Hulk, didn't care for World War Hulk at all.

I just like good stories period. Doesn't need to be a Zombie story, but I also did like....Marvel Zombies, but just for ****s and giggles.

Have you checked out Ellis' other stuff like Planetary,Black Summer,Thunderbolts or Authority?

I just started reading Millar and Hitch's Fantastic Four, and I hadn't read 616 Fantastic Four before it. I really like it so far and I want to read more FF books. Which ones should I check out?

Anything by Mark Waid is solid, he pretty much has the definitive FF run for the past few decades. If you go back to the begining of his run, you'll be able to pick it up with no problem. He also tells one of the greatest Dr. Doom stories in two decades.

I was looking for some recent stories/graphic novels that don't have too many issues, but have some really good stories. I enjoy independent labels more than the mainstream ones.

Hope some of you can help me find some choices.

Thanks!!

League of Extraordinary Gentlemen would be a good starting point. So far there are only 3 trades of it, two of which are in paper back.

I highly suggest picking up graphic novels of:

The Losers

Fables

Y: The Last Man

You shouldn't be disappointed.

Invincible.

I cannot possibly recommend it enough. It's got all the big-league feel of a mainstream superhero comic without the decades of convoluted retcons to deal with. Also, its excellent characterization, smartass dialogue, and energetic art style make it the single most fun comic I've read in years.

I appreciate all the recommendations you've given me, guys.

Over the course of the next few weeks, when a little more cash is available, I'll definitely get some of them and offer my feedback here.

Yes Invincible is amazing. Get this first, you will not be disappointed in the least

Also The Walking Dead by Kirkman is equally amazing
These would be my first two picks if I were you. IMHO

Pick up the Annihilation series. It's a 3-TPB grand tour of Cosmic Marvel with an intergalactic war of genocide thrown in for flavor.

Warning: Adult Content. The recommended book below contains foul language, and may contain nudity or other material you may find offensive

Transmetropolitan - Do you know who Hunter S. Thompson was? if you don't, Hunter was the Author and main character of Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. He was a journalist for Rolling Stone in the seventies, and basicly they would send him out on assignments, he would snort, smoke, and inject every drug he could find in a half mile radius, then write his stories. He was bat **** insane, but also a genius. Transmetropolitan stars Spider Jerusalem, who is loosely based on Hunter, except the book is set about 2000 years in the future. Despite all of the insane technology of the age, people are still petty and weak. They still do drugs, just new drugs. The still fight, bicker, lie, cheat, steal, and are dumb enough to elect the biggest scumbag president to have ever lived, and Spider is going to take him down.

The wseries lasted 60 issues, with two specials, collected in 10 volumes, preferable to start from the begining. The first trade is only $7.95.

Absolutely amazing. Great Recommendation Peck

You can also pick up the first six issues of The Immortal Iron Fist in trade. It's very good and the story itself functions as both an introduction to and total redefinition of the character and his world so nothing whatsoever is required in terms of foreknowledge.

THE cosmic saga in my eyes will always be The Infinity Gauntlet to go along with that you also have to get The Thanos Quest.

Absolutely amazing plot

This is the cover for issue 2. Here is a link to the story line by Starlin and it works out so well that it ties in to his older back stories without having to retcon much.

If you like Indies, I've recently been right into James Turner's "Rex Libris",
and Image has recently republished a new coloured version of David Hine's excellent "Strange Embrace" (offered in trade in this month's previews from what i remember, so check it out).

I recommend FX, written by Wayne Osbourne and penciled & inked by John Byrne. It's only on it's second issue, but it's been great fun, so far. They make the kids actually talk and act like real teenagers...an area where I've noticed a lot of books fail. The dialogue is really good, and actually made think about how I'd behave if I was still in high school and had powers like that. The art is top notch. I'm getting a very strong, classic X-Men vibe from this book, and I really like it.

"dark and mysterious" is pretty broad. Off the top of my head, Fell, Johnny the Homicidal Maniac, The Walking Dead, Sandman, 30 Days of Night, From Hell and Torso would all qualify, but they're all pretty different from one another.

From Hell, Torso and Fell are all murder mysteries. From Hell is about Jack the Ripper, and is extremely dense. Torso is based on a series of unsolved murders from the 1930s. Fell is an anthology detective series, and is just damn good.

JohnnytHM is extremely dark but also has a morbid sense of humor. I enjoy it and most things by Jhonen Vasquez (Johnny, Squee, I Feel Sick, Invader Zim). 30 Days of Night is about vampires and is much better than the movie. Sandman is a modern gothic fantasy which spans all cultures and time, featuring dark gods, demons, and mainly dealing with the world of dreams. The Walking Dead isn't really mysterious, but is probably the best zombie story ever written.

PM me to talk about the hitting, slapping and name calling

i'm gonna give thirty days a try,but if it doesn't work out you can expect a verbal assualt immediately
