The Official Tekken Movie Thread

You're making excuses for these fighting game movies being done poorly. Hollywood probably says the same thing about these video game adaptions that you're saying so they don't even try to do a good job at them.

I'm only defending this one, not all of them. Mortal Kombat was in fact not very bad. It had cheesy dialogue but overall the characters and story were directly from the game...so once again it goes back to the source material. So essentially if you were fans of the first two games(like I was, I can remember when they came out in the arcades even)and the PG-13 rating wasn't why you were disappointed, well then you most likely weren't a fan of the games to begin with.

I don't feel the same about most other video game genres since they usually have deeper stories and deserve better. When it comes to fighting games, as long as they're not super cheesy like Street Fighter, Chun-Li, KoF, DoA and the MK sequel I don't see a problem. This film may have a low budget but overall it seems to not be a super cheesefest like the others I just mentioned. I'll give it a chance.

When it comes to most if not all fighting games, their stories are pretty weak and or basic. How big of a budget do you really need to tell Tekken's story? If you're wanting the godawful Devil and Angel characters in it, well you should wait for an anime.

Some of the comments I'm reading are extremely exaggerated and typical internet cynicism that I've come to expect all the time.

This film in no way looks as bad as that **** Chun-Li film and the DragonBall film.

Technically this film isn't from big Hollywood like Prince of Perisa or Mortal Kombat, so it's not going to be given a huge budget. Whoever financed this at least gave it a chance. Yes, it would have been nice if it got a major Hollywood budget but we're stuck with what we get. That doesn't mean you have to accept it but honestly...this looks pretty damn faithful to the game, which a number of movies based on games with decent to good budgets can't say the same.

While we're talking about this film explain to me what you don't like about it other than it being a bit low budget. Only thing off the top of my head that I didn't like was what looked like a dance scene in a nightclub.

It appears the characters take themselves seriously, it got actual martial artists, the characters look like the game counterparts, the story seems to be adapted without the crazy Devil gene storyline, the only downer really just seems to be the small budget. Otherwise this looks like the 2nd most faithful fighting game adaptation.

I'm looking forward to it.

That trailer was absolutely one of the most cheap and awful looking things that I've seen in a long time.

these games are never gonna be good movies with the directors and writers they attract

at least POP and bio shock got good directors so there may be hope for VG still

My only other problem with the movie is that it looks like it's going straight to DVD and Blu-Ray. And that's a big disappointment. But I'm still gonna love it though.

What's POP? And I didn't know Bio-Shock was getting a movie. I don't even know what that game is about though. I've seen commercials but never played it or read the synopsis on it.

And what's with people here dogging the Devil Gene story-line? It's good in my opinion.

Not to be nit-picky but I'm not really digging Yoshimitsu's costume. They could've did a better Job. Or atleast used his costume from Tekken 5. Same thing with Raven. I hope he's not gonna be wearing the white outfit only. The black version was better. His Ninja otutfit was better also.

Prince Of Peria

and yeah bioshock is getting a movie

Although I can't quite tell if it's the budget(which I doubt)or just the overall visual style the director chose but some of those fight scenes had the visual look of the game and I'm not talking about fighting styles. I don't think it's the budget because a good number of the other fighting scenes look normal and decent visually as well as the fighting moves aren't something that needs to be CGI'd.

Maybe it was just the lighting but my gf even agreed with me. Does anyone else see this or am I tripping.
The visual effects team probably just uses a gamma/light-blur filter over the video.Tekken 6 does it too (and you can choose to keep it on or off).

Trailer could have been worse. Doesn't look ambitious & it's cut too quickly for me to recognise may characters. Eddy Gordo looks good. Is Heihachi in this film?

Hahaha. You have me confused right now. On the previous page weren't you giving me a bit of a hard time because I was saying the movie doesn't look half bad?

I don't have a problem with the Devil story-line. The point I was making was that this movie was using pretty much only human characters, so it wouldn't require as big of a budget for effects.

I saw this trailer at another board.

Yeah, it has a DTV look to it (that isn't bad, just with that 35 mil budget you think the DOP/movie would scream THEATERS). I can see why this is DTV in the UK. But...the fight scenes should be nice. And that is all that should matter in a Tekken movie. I be renting or buying it.

And this sin't the US trailer. This is the UK DTV trailer.
This cost 35 million? Where'd all the money go then? Certainly not to make a better movie.:hehe:

You think it looks like **** TAC?
I don't know I only watched the trailer much. But I never really followed the games much, just beside from playing the first ones. so I guess it be hard to make a storyline that isn't just fighting for 90 minutes.

The #1 reason in my opinion why it is hard to make a good video game storyline specifically TEKKEN is because there really is no coherent story.Every character in the games have there own separate story that really don't connect with the other chracters. So unless you have a good writer with some imagination and creativity you are gonna get a jumbled mess of a movie everytime.

No. I said you was making excuses for these fighting game movies being done poorly. Looking at Mortal Kombat and looking at the trailer to Tekken, it's obvious these movies are just a joke to filmmakers.

Ok, now I see where you're coming from but no, I wasn't trying to make excuses for video game movies being done poorly.

I just don't believe a movie based on a ****ing fighting game of all games needs a $150-200 million dollar budget. When it comes to a more fantasy based fighting game like Mortal Kombat, it had good budget for it's time...especially being one of the earliest game to film adaptations when they were testing the waters for that genre.

I think a damn good amount of games out there deserve a large budget and need to be fairly serious but when it comes to fighting games their stories aren't that epic or incredibly deep. That's why I don't think fighting games need to be as orgasmic as some people think that want every movie to be **** in your pants worthy.

I'm going to give Tekken a chance. It doesn't look nearly as bad as some are saying, they just wanted the film to have a mega budget...even though it doesn't need one. When it comes to comic films, those make sense since they'll have a lot of effects to handle or even a film like Prince of Persia. For a fighting game like Tekken or even Virtua Fighter, most if not all of the fights are practical and can be done entirely by real people as opposed to having to use massive amounts of costly CGI.

The story to Tekken is about the Iron Fist tournament, much like how Street Fighter and MK and...well most fighting game's stories are about a tournament. I know that all the individual characters have their own back stories but you can't expect a film to focus all that time on each character. Which is why in this case, they chose one of the more popular fighters and I believe much like Ken/Ryu in Street Fighter, a main focus in the games. That's why I don't have a problem with the story, they're focusing on one of the main character's storyline and why he's in the tournament instead of making the movie a mess by trying to give all the main characters an equal amount of screentime.

Exactly.

It seriously wouldn't work, unless you make the Movie 3-4 hours long to develop every single character and delve into their backgrounds.

I wonder if Christie and Gordo will have a connection in the Movie. After all, wasn't Gordo her teacher in the games?

Everyone has a favorite look for Yoshimitsu.

My personal fave is his TEKKEN 2 outfit but I think the film makers chose wisely and did a good job.

As for Raven...come on - he HAS to be in the white outfit otherwise he is blatantly a BLADE ripoff lol!:woot:

I never wanted Tekken to have a 150-200 million dollar budget. This isn't The Dark Knight or Avatar. I just wish Hollywood could've at least taken this more seriously and given it a bigger budget like 60 million. That was the budget of the first Blade. I didn't wont this to end up being another Street Fight and Mortal Kombat 1 & 2. Mortal Kombat 1 was was actually fine for it's time though.

I'm still gonna like Tekken rather it comes to theaters or straight to DVD & Blu-Ray.

.

I never complained about the storyline. Jin is the main character of the games so I already knew the main focus gonna be him. Of course they couldn't give the other characters equal screen time. The movie would have to go on for a few hours if they did.

Well, I doubt this will be better than the first Mortal Kombat, but it at least seems watchable compared to Dragonball Evolution or Legend of Chun Li, or upcoming King of Fighters. Those ones were (and in KOF, trailer looks) just unbearable.

Although I do wish Devil gene had been in it, I guess it couldn't have it in with the budget they were working with.

Anyway, Tekken is my favourite fighting game - so even if it does look DTV (but seems ok considering the budget), I'm willing to give it a chance.
