As a fan of the book, it thrills me to see so many scenes come to life with such rich, powerful atmosphere. However, it's also got some serious issues.
Too much important character building was lost from the book. Rorschach and Dr. Manhattan only had half of their souls, and what they lost was vital to the themes and lessons of the book.
I also feel like action, excessive gore, and softcore porn were prioritized over telling the story properly.
Therefore, while it otherwise was practically a masterpiece of an adaption, I have trouble recommending it to people who haven't read the book. Some of the best material is skimmed past or just not there, so the movie struggled to have the same gravity of message that the book did. The point felt like it was somewhat lost, or muddled.
On the other hand, I was so pleased with the acting, the costume design, the set pieces, the CGI, and Zack's clearly gifted hand for crafting a dynamic, artistic sense of motion and emotion in scenes. I was locked into my seat and fully drawn in.
I'm very mixed on it. I enjoy watching it, but I also lament what was missing. I'm sad that it wasn't a two-parter, yet I understand why.
Mostly, I often wonder if people who hadn't read the book and still watched it really understood it...
All of that said.. I have a hard time deciding just what I would rate it. I look at it from two very different perspectives; both as a gushing, overjoyed fan, and also as a critical fan who cares about the bigger picture.
I feel inclined to forgive it, because I know Zack was likely being pressured to cram it into one movie, and that only gave him so much time to work with... but I also feel like his prioritization was a little off when managing that limited time (which may have also been to please the studio, who knows).
In an attempt to force myself to give it a rating, let's say... in a good mood, I would give it an 8.5/9. In a more critical mood, I'd give it a 7.5.
That was hard.
