The Official "Watchmen" Fan Rate & Review Thread - Part 1

Poll was closed or I would have added to the 10/10. I absolutely love this film with as much of a passion as I hate the Graphic novel. Everywhere the novel failed for me the film succeeded.

Still love this, been meaning to give it another watch lately but just haven't had the time, still Snyders best movie for me, though I loved MOS as well.

Snyder really knows how to capture that specific style of comic from the late 80's on screen.

Watchmen is a great film with amazing moments. The comic itself is mindblowing, from what I've read of it so far.

Been meaning to watch this again of late, still love it, especially the DC, just getting a spare 3 hours to watch it is the problem though!

If the poll was still open I would give it an 8 or a 9. It's an extremely well made movie. I love the choices in music. It's been around 2 years since I watched it, so I need to plan some time to watch it again soon.

I've only seen it once, and it was the director's cut, and I would give it an 8/10 but it is clear to me from this thread that I need to watch it again. I think I might get the graphic novel as well. Great thread, very helpful to me.

Still love the movie myself, watched it again quite recently, so under rated.

I think the movie is ok. It doesn't come close to the graphic novel IMO.

As a fan of the book, it thrills me to see so many scenes come to life with such rich, powerful atmosphere. However, it's also got some serious issues.

Too much important character building was lost from the book. Rorschach and Dr. Manhattan only had half of their souls, and what they lost was vital to the themes and lessons of the book.

I also feel like action, excessive gore, and softcore porn were prioritized over telling the story properly.

Therefore, while it otherwise was practically a masterpiece of an adaption, I have trouble recommending it to people who haven't read the book. Some of the best material is skimmed past or just not there, so the movie struggled to have the same gravity of message that the book did. The point felt like it was somewhat lost, or muddled.

On the other hand, I was so pleased with the acting, the costume design, the set pieces, the CGI, and Zack's clearly gifted hand for crafting a dynamic, artistic sense of motion and emotion in scenes. I was locked into my seat and fully drawn in.

I'm very mixed on it. I enjoy watching it, but I also lament what was missing. I'm sad that it wasn't a two-parter, yet I understand why.

Mostly, I often wonder if people who hadn't read the book and still watched it really understood it...

All of that said.. I have a hard time deciding just what I would rate it. I look at it from two very different perspectives; both as a gushing, overjoyed fan, and also as a critical fan who cares about the bigger picture.

I feel inclined to forgive it, because I know Zack was likely being pressured to cram it into one movie, and that only gave him so much time to work with... but I also feel like his prioritization was a little off when managing that limited time (which may have also been to please the studio, who knows).

In an attempt to force myself to give it a rating, let's say... in a good mood, I would give it an 8.5/9. In a more critical mood, I'd give it a 7.5.

That was hard.

In my opinion the movie (after seeing all cuts and in theatre) it was meh. I mean it's fun to see scenes recreated semi perfectly but for me the movie just never comes close at all to the heart of the plot, characters, aesthetic, themes, depth and complexity that the original comic book has. Its like a cheap recreation of a Monet painting by a artists that does not understand the depth of what Money painted. (This was super pretentious but I could find no other analogy)

But I will bring up what I felt were some bad parts.

Rorschach becoming the "hero".

The actor for Ozymandias is horrible and OZymandias made into a one dimensional villain, which he was supposed to mock.

The massive "unrealism" of the fight scenes that undermines a thematic core in both the movie and comic and in general bad fighting choreography

Bad music choice for the sex scene (Massive nitpick but hallelujah is not what I pick for erotic scene) and leaving out the moment of solidification of Lauries and Dans relationship as well as again undermining a theme of the book and movie.

But in this fans opinion the biggest problem is the fact that they stuck so close. I mean the reality is that if they went with the bat **** insane version that was suggested by Terry Gilliam we couldn't have compared in the same way and therefore it wouldn't have felt like the cheap imitation of something superior in every way. When they changed something it usually undermined the themes and concepts the book was based on. It is kinda one of those adaption that shows that just because it looks like the book does not mean it is the book.
