I like my penguin to be fat and dangerous. But not a serial killer.

^ He's hardly Zsasz, but Penguin is ruthless and does kill people;

They should keep that ruthless trait in the movies.

I would say that The Penguin is one of the DC villains most contemptuous of human life. He's a vicious bastard.

But he's a killer in the mob boss style. A John Gotti on steroids. He's vicious but not crazy.

Right, but he's still a killer.

I imagine Penguin having his fingers in many pies. Arms dealing, drug dealing, human trafficking. A jack-of-all-trades criminal, making him invaluable to various crime families in Gotham. I also imagine him having dirt on every person in a position of power in Gotham, making him virtually untouchable.

There is so much potential with the character. People often reference The Joker or Ra's al Ghul as the "Moriarty" to Batman's "Sherlock," but Penguin could just as easily fill that role. He is quite literally the "Napoleon of Crime" in Gotham City.

Exactly. Penguin is a sublime villain with bags of potential to be a truly terrifying threat to Batman and Gotham if utilized properly.

Yeah... stop giving us Falcone, Maroni, etc... and give us ****ing Penguin!!!

Right, but he's still a killer.

I agree. I guess my point comes from the 3 or 4 episodes of Gotham I watched. There was one where penguin killed one kid with a bottle then abducted the other and it was implied that he tortured him for the heck of it. I don't see penguin as someone getting his jollies from killing somebody. That's the Joker. Penguin kills when he's going to benefit from it from a business side of things.

I kind of disagree there. I've always viewed Penguin as someone willing to kill for the fun of it if the mood strikes. That's not necessarily a trait held in reserve for only the Joker.

Hmm, I wouldn't say he kills for fun. I always thought he was meant to be a guy with a short temper so he wouldn't kill because it seems fun, rather some henchman disobeys him or because Bats messes up one of his plans and takes it out on them.

There's cause, just not a sensible one, but not at random.

Btw, I want to see a Penguin similar to the one from TAS.

A guy who, on the surface, has a sense of class. Club owner Penguin who just happens to have way too many connections in both the criminal world and the business one of Gotham.

Eventually he's exposed for what he is: just another gangster, even if he doesn't see it that way.

This is very true. I remember he had one of his henchmen killed just because he dared to interrupt him;

I'm not implying Penguin goes for random kills ala the way the Joker does, but there's likely a part of him that enjoys it.

Just look at that scan that TJ posted. He may have reasons, but that doesn't mean there's a part of him that isn't enjoying it.

Basically, the Penguin is a sociopath. He kills because he can, and because its fun. However, the reasons that he kills are comprehensible "sociopathic crimelord" reasons, rather than those of an insane serial killing clown. He kills you because your in his way, or because you offended him, or as a show of power. Its evil, but in the same manner as a drug cartel boss running on machismo.

Toby Jones would make a wonderful Penguin.

So, I suspect, would Andy Serkis, though I prefer him for Mad Hatter.

I just don't see The Penguin as a huge 70-year-old Frenchman.

He makes a pretty good thumb.

Watched the new Sherlock last night.

Yeah. Toby Jones for Penguin please.

Penguin is one of those characters that are hard to do justice. You want him to be vicious, but not a brute, thus gentlemanly, but still a credible threat. He's more than just another one of the Gotham crime lords, he's a criminal mastermind, a chess master, a villain that is actually more intelligent than Batman, but his constant underestimations of the bat (thinking he's no more than a muscle bound brute) are what cause his downfall. I feel that he should be very affable, someone who is pleasant to be around...unless you piss him off. An aristocratic man, who can order someone to be murdered, and go to the opera afterward... There's an aura of "elegance" and "class" about him.

I want Oswald to get justice on film! (I don't like the Batman Returns version).... Also, I'm not a fan of the trend of making him skinny either (they couldn't leave him alone after getting to Amanda Waller)
