The Penguin The Penguin on HBO - General Discussion

Well, that was quite the season opener. Lauren LeFranc did an amazing job as writer and showrunner if this episode is any indication of what the rest of the show has to offer. Once again, Farrell was unrecognizable as Oswald "Oz" Cobb, largely due to Mike Marino's incredible makeup artistry. His distinct gait and overall body language, combined with a mostly convincing NY accent, helped him further inhabit the role and create a truly captivating performance. Milioti's portrayal of Sofia Falcone was equally riveting, and I feel like this episode merely scratches the surface of her potential. I'd be remiss not to mention Didi O'Connell, who is always a delight. Not that there's anything more that needs to be said, but I really like how the show takes its time to give each character a satisfying development that keeps the viewer engaged. Bring on the second helping, please.

LOVED IT. What a pitch perfect first episode. It's everything I've always wanted from the show Gotham to be done right but more importantly, it's a great way to expand the world of the Reevesverse. All the scenes with Oz, Sofia, Sal, and Victor were so great.

Also, I just love they finally confirmed this Gotham takes place in New Jersey. About f**kin time.

This was a delightfully twisted pilot. Appreciated all the dark humor. Christin Milioti was incredible and stole the episode for me. Colin continues to be a riot. Definitely off to a promising start.

I do think comparisons to The Sopranos are out of place…that remains in a class of its own and this is far too comic booky (I don’t mean that in a bad way) to invoke the level of nuance and authenticity of that show. I see some of the influence, but this is in a very different lane. That’s just my little nitpick of the critical reaction, not the show itself.

Christin Milioti lookin crazy with those big eyes when she had Oz tied up.

DC has the most unrealistic expectations on their shows and movies. I just saw a critic on YouTube say that the Penguin show is awesome but it’s not quite to the level of the Sopranos. I am guessing the Expectations for the Lanterns is that it better be as good as the first season of True Detective. :gross: :woozy: :whoops:

This is why I was saying critics were probably misguided to start invoking those comparisons in the reviews. It just sets the wrong expectations.

The Penguin episode 1 was pretty fantastic! Loved how it literally takes place shortly (I think they said a week) after The Batman. The Penguin having his own sidekick is interesting plot as well.

Alright. Just finished episode 1 After Hours. Three things stood out for me. 1.Sophia Falcone is absolutely terrifying. 2. I am cheering for the Penguin to take over the Gotham underworld. 3. I didn’t think about were is Batman after the opening credits.

Also, I only saw the last season of the Sapranos and the first episode of the Penguin was better than any episode I saw of the last season. Matt Reeves Batman world is awesome.

The Penguin is great, much better than I expected, but to suggest that it is better than The Sopranos in any way is rather ridiculous, especially if you only saw the last season. The last season of The Sopranos was one of its weakest, but even still, it had many, many great moments and you need to have watched the story from the start to properly judge and understand them. The Sopranos, at its best, probably remains the great television series of all time. And that is not even taking into account how literally revolutionary and mindblowing it all was when we first saw it in 1999.
