The Penguin The Penguin on HBO - General Discussion

I saw one review that called the show a Trump allegory, and I'm like? What the hell, do you actually know what an allegory is?

The part where he was vaguely saying he had the best new drugs and the Falcone shipment could revolutionize the drug game did remind me of Trump for like 10secs, then the other hour of the show happened lol it's a ridiculous take otherwise.

That's a dumb take. Why and how people read present-day politics into this episode, I'll never know. Someone trying to up the drug game in Gotham didn't begin in 2016 and onward.

The Penguin” is an ice cold hit.

Per HBO, the spinoff series starring Colin Farrell and Cristin Milioti opened to 5.3 million viewers across all platforms since its debut on Sept. 19. That includes repeat airings on HBO as well as streaming viewership. That puts it above the final season premiere of “Succession,” which drew 4.9 million viewers, and the second season premiere of “The White Lotus,” which drew 4.1 million. It also falls just behind the premiere of “True Detective: Night Country,” which nabbed 5.7 million viewers.

Additionally, the show has landed the biggest 4-day audience for a new series on Max in every region globally since “The Last of Us” in Jan. 2023.

Of course Debbie Downer Grace said it still is not a hit as she compared it to Matlock’s opening Sunday. Grace said we have to wait on Neilson before she judges. :whoops: Then she said some crap about DC fans keep getting their hopes up then everything crashes down on us.
That dumbass is really comparing the ultimate apples and oranges of HBO and CBS?

She has a bug in the booty when it comes to DC. Claims to be a big Batman fan. I just know that she hates every DC casting. At first I thought it was her issues with James Gunn but now I believe it’s something else after I saw her coverage with another show.

Only time I ever watched her videos is when a relative would send me them. He stopped sending me them awhile back. I'm thankful lol. But some people really have a weird grudge with DC or James Gunn. It's just... weird lol.

She has lots of Snyder bros in her corner because she supported the Snyder cut and hates on Gunn. I thinks she looks for subscribers for her channel by overacting positive for certain shows and movies.

Her voice hits a certain pitch that my ears find unpleasant.

I'm just going to assume those are good numbers for HBO considering it doesn't reach as many households as it being on Netflix or Amazon Prime etc. Here in Canada you need to have Crave which is another streaming service that is very expensive.

The main thing is that HBO considers it a hit so they ask Matt Reeves for more. With the excellent word of mouth hopefully it starts gaining more viewers although I do wonder if, the Thursday premiere then switching to Sundays, will hurt it.

I mean, if anything, I feel like airing on a day when people actually expect new stuff to be airing on HBO might, in fact, help it.

Grace was getting roasted on X. So now she says she loves the Penguin show but compares it to a Star Wars show (Andor) that does not have even close the views of the Penguin show. Grace says that DC needs to grow its viewership. I am guessing she probably wished that Reeves replaced Penguin with Quinn and Ivy :woozy: :gross: .

I would agree with this if the Sunday episode aired was the second episode of the series, instead of just showing the pilot again. But since it was just the first, and admittedly, more people are likely to watch HBO shows on Sunday nights versus Thursday, it's just another chance to watch and the network to get some extra ratings numbers.

From the start, I thought this show had potential but while there was nothing fundamentally wrong with what was being shown prior to release, I just didn't felt particularly hyped about it.
In fact, I initially planned to wait a while before watching the show... and I should have stuck to that.

Because now I'm hooked and have to wait a damn week to get my fix!
:funny:

More seriously, I'm pleasantly surprised by this first episode.

Everything has been said about Collin Farell, always impeccable in his role. I sometimes “feared” that this version might be too tempted to stray too far from the folklore of the original, but the acting and writing give this Oz just the right mix of pathetic, slimy and funny to really feel in presence of the classic Penguin (at least my idea of it). The character’s DNA is sure there and it may be the first time since De Vito’s (very particular) version that I truly enjoy the character.
Also, we already knew that Mike Marino was a make-up master, but I’m very impressed how here, unlike in The Batman, we're given to see Oz in broad daylight, yet the work done on Farrell's face remains simply undetectable. Crazy work.
The rest of the cast and characters are also very good. Cristin Milioti is definitely charismatic and promising as Sofia Falcone and Rhenzy Feliz's Vic is perfectly believable as this sort of forced Robin for the Penguin (wheel-stealing eh, I see what you've done there...).

Although aware that trailers are by nature work in progress, I had some reservations about the look of the series, preparing myself to mentally make this concession on image quality due to “TV budget”... But it's now clear that continuity with the film is really well maintained, and frankly, I don't even find it a set back from the film (save for that very brief shot of Bela Real on TV at the beginning but I'm nitpicking here).
The cinematography is solid and where I expected the daytime scenes to lose some of the magic, they don't. Whatever the time of day, this Gotham City retains its magnificient grit and stylized yet palpable look. Chief's kiss visuals!

Now, the biggest surprise for me was the quality of the writing. For all my appreciation of The Batman, I've never made a secret that I've always been a little frustrated by its writing, which has always struck me as certainly ambitious but laborious (I definitely get the “and then...” syndrome out of it... don't ban me).
Here, I have nothing to say or even to nitpick. The characters are very well introduced and characterized, and the events follow and respond to each other perfectly.... It's tight and really well-oiled.
It was also pretty dense for a first episode! Like a mini-movie, and I can only hope that the rest of the series will maintain this quality and generosity.

So yeah, very satisfied here, and if my entouthiasm for this universe had started to tarnish for a while, this pilot has definitely reawakened something! :battinson:

For me it was that opening scene with Alberto that was absolutely dynamite with the Oz going from laughing to the oh... Then cut to the title card, followed by him throwing the body down the stairs. Even when I was watching the scene I kept thinking back, wait, in the trailer this may be where he shoots someone but, it being Alberto, I was thinking they wouldn't do that so soon.

I’ve sadly moved to digital so I’m going to wait for the iTunes/Apple TV release to add the series to my DC Collection on the app but it’s awesome that WBD is still committed to physical releases.

If I wanted to be a bit snarky, I'd say they know very well who their audience is, and how among them there's a whole bunch of fans ready to throw some bills to get the series on their shelf...

*sigh*

... and I'm one of them... 😅
