The Penguin The Penguin on HBO - General Discussion

Report: The Joker starring Barry Keoghan is the next big DC series for HBO and will lead into The Batman 3 the same way that The Penguin is leading into The Batman 2.

The report comes from Devin Faraci who used to be an ace scooper until he got me too’d.

Putting aside whether it's true or not, it wouldn't shock me if they needed to have these conversations early as Barry Keoghan is an in demand actor and you probably would need to book him well in advance.

To me, another spinoff show will either be Catwoman or the joker as they are the two marquee characters that fit the bill. No matter if people think joker is overdone, it will get eyeballs on HBO and it's a huge opportunity for DC studios.

Reeves has said the Arkham series has shifted into something a bit different. Honestly, I'm betting that it got changed into a Sofia series. And WB is very interested in a Penguin season 2.

The movies are supposed to focus on Batman so if he's giving us spin-offs of the rogues gallery in order to build them up, that would be amazing.

I just don't see how joker isn't something they do on HBO. They have an actor in Barry that has been in HBO shows and would probably be willing to do this. Given how the penguin has been talked about, you just know joker will be on another level in terms of popularity.

At a minimum you know it's been talked about by Matt Reeves, if this comes out between 2 and 3 you would be looking at 2027 at the earliest and by that time, joker 2 is a distant memory to most people.

That’s probably the easiest route to go as far as garnering eyes, plus utilizing Keoghan will never be a bad idea. I’d just wonder what the angle is. An anti-origin story would be fun. Ledger did it with different stories, but you could deep diver there over 6-8 episodes. Could show some of his crimes before his first meeting with Batman, then show their first meeting since they say it's been a year in The Batman, show him in Arkham, then have him break out in the end.

I don’t buy it.

With The Penguin, they were given the opportunity to expand on what had already been established on the big screen in the first one.

A TV series leading into a bigger appearance in the third? Doesn’t feel like you’re capitalizing on the character in the right way IMO.

Jeff Sneider confirmed the report about Barry Keoghan and The Joker HBO show. It’ll lead into The Batman 3.

The Joker as a brand is huge. I agree, an Arkham series would make sense or a series with joker in it versus him being the main character. But from a marketing perspective, I don't know if they want to give up the opportunity of just calling the series, the joker, for instant recognition. It also wouldn't shock me if they offer Lauren Lefranc the opportunity to pitch an idea.

The more interviews I read from Matt Reeves it sounds like his dream has always been to create this large batman universe with the movies as the anchors and tv/comics as side stories.

It's really exciting to see a director that interested in Batman and his world.

Great insight/research from reddit (ALifeIsButADream and Chance5e):

I just looked it up and the title of the finale (A Great or Little Thing) comes from a line from Oscar Wilde's poem, 'The Ballad of Read Gaol'. There’s a man who is going to be hanged, by the hangman:

“A great or little thing, when a voice behind me whispered low, 'That fellow's got to swing'"

"For each man kills the thing he loves"

Make of that what you will.

They could call it Joker's Asylum. There was a comic with that name from like 14 years back.

my thoughts on this Joker series:

- Love the idea! Phillips movies being such a departure from classic Joker and Leto’s Joker failing so massively has actually left a lot of room for Barry. We still have a lot of classic comic Joker to explore.

-People talk about Joker fatigue, but he really is just as important as Batman. And we haven’t gotten a proper Joker vs Batman onscreen since TDK. This will hopefully scratch that itch.

-Batman has to be in this show. At least the finale.

-I wouldn’t mind seeing an origin for Joker, but I don’t want to know his name.

-I hated Margot’s Harley and Gaga’s Harley. We have room for another version. Would love to see Reeves’ take.

-I think Joker as a lead character has plenty of potential and won’t feel exhausting if done correctly. I just don’t want them to make him sympathetic at all. Pure chaotic evil.

Well at the earliest the Joker series would probably be coming out is 2028. I think Phillips “Joker 2” will be gone from memory by then.

A Joker spinoff doesn't have to follow the origin stuff Reeves did with the Penguin. Since his scene in The Batman was technically deleted, I think it would be cool if he expanded on the Silence of the Lambs concept, maybe with Joker being forced to aid in another crime.

This is likely the Arkham show.
The Arkham series is dead, Reeves said it "evolved" into something else, which to me would make sense to be a Joker series. Reeves clearly wants to explore Barry's Joker more, but since the idea is for the films to focus on Bruce the best way is to do it on HBO.

I'm very meh to the series because a) a Joker spin-off is the most boring choice they could have gone for, b) I'm really Joker fatigued at this point and c) that 5 minute deleted scene we had of Keoghan was spectacularly mediocre. He's a great actor but I'd much rather have that GCPD show or even the Arkham one, rather than a full spin-off centered on the character. Well at least it's not a Catwoman show.
