The Princess and the Frog

It was pretty good, but man the one thing that got me was....

Ray's death, that was almost as bad as Mufasa's death. **** had me tearing up. Then when they showed him with his star, I was like Maaaaaaaaaaaaaaan....*sniff*

The fact that he was pleading the whole time and seriously looking more and more terrified is probably what made it scarier. The other villains all died pretty quick. Scar got eaten but offscreen.

And presumably burned to death right after!

Hopper's was also pretty horrific in a cute, ironic way.

I also felt bad for Ray. As a human, I'm not inclined to be saddened by the death of an insect, but damn, that guy was lovable. I thought him getting "reincarnated" as a star was cute, but at the same time I told my friend "That's not Ray, that's a supernova! They're all gonna die of gamma radiation exposure!"

you may wanna lose the major spoiler

I really think the music was lacking in this one. Watching Tarzan again, I feel they could done a whole lot better, especially being in New Orleans.

Well it's been out for a week but ok :)

I felt the same way pertaining to the animal sidekicks. Terk might have been a little annoying at times, I never felt that she or Tantor were were too outlandish the way Louis the Alligator was. But he was likable and funny so I didn't hate him the way I thought I would.

Luis was no more outlandish then timon and puma, mushu, baloo the bear, or gus and jaq from cinderella.

the movie doesn't come out here til next week but i'm diggin "friends on the other side" :awesome:

did anybody catch the "special floats?" i thought that was awsome..

I think the music grows on you. I've been relistening to the soundtrack and it is good.

But I wish Naveen would of gotten a solo song, or more screentime. I didn't feel as though it was just Tiana's story but his too.

^They pretty much put her upfront as the main character, with him as the love interest. He is the Jasmine to her Aladdin, the Nala to her Simba, and what not.

does anyone think having the word "princess" in a film title turns some viewers away? (parents of boys, teens) would a title like "Down in the Bayou" or simply "The Frog Prince" be more inclusive... I know at first I didn't want to say "I wanna see that princess movie", being a teenage male and all, lol, but got over it as I like 2D

and does anyone think it'll do well this Christmas weeked against Avatar & The Chipmunks 2???

-I'm secretly hoping for it to pick up and come out #1, but that's unlikely

It just has to be thought of like all the earlier princess flicks. The only ones that were really gender neutral was Mulan and possibly Beauty and the Beast.

The thing is, for those earlier princess movies, Disney simply used their original names (Little Mermaid was already called Little Mermaid, Sleeping Beauty was Sleeping Beauty, etc). For The Princess and the Frog, it was originally inspired by a story called 'The Frog Prince'.

i thought aladdin was pretty gender neutral

Finally caught this. Went with my sister and best bud and enjoyed it a lot. The characters were really well done and I was hooked on them all. Tiana and Naveen were extremely likable characters and I was expecting to hate her best friend and Ray, the Firebug but I think Ray ended up being everyone's favorite.

I do agree that the music wasn't as memorable as all the other Disney flicks, but the music very much were all well done and fit with the tone they were going for the movie. Friends on the OtherSide, though, by the villain was very catchy and memorable.

Another small critique was that I felt there was a bit too much musical numbers. I'm gonna need to watch the other Disney flicks again because I surely don't remember this much music. While I felt the music did lead the story forward, many times I just wanted to just watch the story go on by itself. But beyond that, I wasn't too bothered. I was entertained. I'll actually be seeing this again tomorrow with my brother this time who also wanted to see it.

I'd give this a B+

Really happy to see 2D animated Disney again.

Oh, and the villain ROCKED! Very creepy and well done. His last scene was definitely something out of a horror movie.

I agree I liked friends on the otherside, I think maybe because I like Dr. Facilier and the whole voodoo theme for him...

I think he may be my favoritest Disney Villain yet, srry Jafar lol

Yeah but all those animals can at least stand on their hind legs. Except for Pumbaa but he moved like an actual warthog. With the exception of him rising out of the water and later scaring the mardi gras crowd, there was nothing alligator-esque about Louis' movements. Like I said, I've come to accept it but I hope future Disney animal sidekicks are more animal-like in there movement. I've made my case here before.

I caught Triton. Were there others?

I did love this movie (saw it twice in theaters) but I agree with all of the people who said the music was lacking. And seeing as it was the "2D Revival" I reeeeeally wish they'd hired Alan Menken. I mean, I can understand why they hired Randy Newman - he is from New Orleans, after all - but in my opinion his music is the definition of mediocrity. Menken's music is always top notch. But I definitely enjoyed the movie regardless and I loved Friends on the Other Side. Tiana's singing voice was absolutely gorgeous too - it sucks that she only got one solo song!

I don't think the movie did nearly as well as it deserved, but it seems like the type of movie that'll have legs and kids will still be watching it in 50 years. Plus the merch sale is booming. I really hope this opens up a new 2D Renaissance!

But somehow I didn't even choke up when
Ray died.
Maybe because my friend was absolutely SOBBING and I was too busy being amused by her to be sad.

Looks like this movie is going to have a hard time making 100 million domestic.

I believe it's made it's budget back through merchandise though. And most Disney films have legs too. Lion King opened up pretty small too, and accumulated most of it's money during the whole run.

The problem is that there are going to be a slew of movies that follow the same demographic as this movie in the weeks ahead. Alvin and the Chipmunks 2 took most of the demographic, which is why it slipped from 2 to 7 at the box office. You also have in the next month The Spy Next Door which stars Jackie Chan, Hoodwinked Too and The Tooth Fairy (which features Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson in a pink tutu), all with the same kids demographic as The Princess and the Frog.
