The Princess and the Frog

- They totally dodged the white/black interaccial thing by getting a guy from a non-existant (right?) country. They really did a heisman on the whole racial issue, and I thought that was ingenious.
Uh, Naveen wasn't White, though. He was obviously "of color", but not as regarded as lowly as a Black person. He can across as a mix of Spanish/Sicilian/Greek or something, so, I'm sure there are plenty of dark complexion women where's he's from.. :woot:

I thought the songs were very memorable, but then again, it's hard to determine what anyone could conclude as being "memorable" and the movie hasn't even been out for a week...I can't be certain why people didn't enjoy the music all that much, but as some have pointed out, I guess the genre of the music could be what's polarizing some viewers. Which, is unfortunate.

strong opening, but the real question is will it have legs in the coming weeks with Avatar on the horizon
Well, the audience that would see Avatar won't really be a part of the audience to see this film. There's not a big overlap in appealing content, so, I think this movie will stay at #2 at least for another two weeks, IMO.

"Spanish/Sicilian/Greek" are Europeans no???...

plus in the Disney parks he's played by a white actors so...

IMO Naveen is just a tanned white guy, Maldonia is from the Mediterranean I've read, and cliche' but maybe he has a Mediterrannean tan...

I heard it opened at #1 and was the biggest opening for an animated film in December???

- I really don't like the Gospel music style being used outside of a Judeo-Christian worship setting, and having a Voodoo priestess using the style was eye-rolling to the extreme. She was funny though, and it was charming, but I couldn't help but shake my head.

From some of my readings, Vodou has some ties to Catholicism.

Also, in Hercules, the Muses sang in gospel tunes. And they rocked. :woot:

It's a proven fact these guys are white?

I think Disney made him racially ambiguous so they wouldn't be limited to the actors that could be face characters for him. And also does it truely matter what he was, this day and age?

Don't know about Disneyland, but the Prince Naveens in Disney World are only Hispanic and Black, no white guys.

or at least, Prince Naveen has appeared to be a bit more exotic in appearance.

No. Casting calls stated dark skin tone only.

The rest of the princes are all White and Hispanic

Oh maybe it was batboy then. IDR and I'm too lazy to check. I know someone in this thread saw the movie before it was finished and pretty much said that.

I really liked the ending with the reprise Down in New Orleans. It just worked out so perfect and went with the song.

I'll be seeing this atleast one more time in theaters I promised my best friend back home we'd see this together.

i said it...

and still pretty much feel the same way, i felt most of the music was too similar, though my 2 favorite songs were probably the one the fireflies sing, and the "dig a little deeper"

both those guy's definitely have some latino decent.. neither are "white"

you guys do know that Latin isn't a race right, most Latinos ARE white... the majority of Latinos are descendant of Spaniards (SPAIN Europeans) the Caribbean Latinos just have tans from living in tropical climates... just in case no one knew that

for ex. Antonio Banderas, Shakira, Ricky Martin and Jennifer Lopez are considered White (race) Latinos (culture) meaning they are predominantly of European descent

Ricky Martin sans tan

Senor Martin with one (Naveen-much???)

an example of a non white Latin is... George Lopez Indigenious Latino (who are of Native American descent) or Zoe Saldana Black Latina

I don't mean to rant it's just I've taken a few too many Caribbean/Ethnic studies courses

and we are made to know the distinction between Ethnicity and Race

(Naveen with blue eye if I'm not mistaken) this image made me question his non-whiteness lol

but I suppose he could be an entirely new race of Maldonians, or mixed... but I just have an inlkling that he's white and they darkenned him a bit after the initial backlash, as the initial promo material has him much lighter

anyway I think I bring this up so much, as I'm pro-interracial union... I think it's a nice factor of the movie's theme of what's on the inside and a perfect representation of the US and I don't want them to cop out and say "fine we'll make him black if it makes you happy" and compromise our message, as they've changed so much already

No one mentioned "Latin being a race", we've mentioned ethnicities....

In the states most latinos would be what you call mestizos especially the mexicans. Meaning those descended from european and native mixtures and antonio banderas is from spain so he's just european.

#1 with 27 mil. Not the blockbuster people usually gun for, but it showcased that the art form is still kicking as opposed to CG everything.

You also have to remember that it opening in limited release in NYC and LA two weeks earlier. That is where a lot of people saw the film and those box-office numbers weren't accounted for during the wide release opening weekend numbers. With that said, in my opinion the numbers are a bit skewed.

totally forgot about those... does anyone know the limited release #'s?

sPoiler alert, but that's Lawrence. Naveen's got brown eyes.

Anyhoo, did anybody else enjoy Facilier's demise? That's one of my favorite asPects of a Disney film, how the villains get their comeuppance.

It reminded me immediately of Raimi's stuff, mostly Drag Me to Hell.

Yeah, on my list of ways I wouldn't want to die, the way Dr. Facilier died is near the top.

I'm just glad he didn't die by falling off a cliff like all Disney Villians seem to do.

How would you guys rank Faciler as far as Disney Villians go?

Me he would atleast by in my Top 10 close to top 5.

When they started singing the chorus ironically, I knew he was ****ed then.

I kinda thought it was interesting that he was kinda symbolic of consumers/the economy. He kept borrowing and borrowing and borrowing from his Friends On The Other Side, until he couldn't pay them back, and then he's ****ed.

Oh snap, you're right about that.

Yup, being dragged by shadow demons into a portal to, presumably hell, which disappears leaving behind a headstone with your terrified face chisled into it is pretty original for a g-rated film.

I'm gonna have to list my top villains one of these days but Facilier was definitely near the top.

The fact that he was pleading the whole time and seriously looking more and more terrified is probably what made it scarier. The other villains all died pretty quick. Scar got eaten but offscreen.
