So much to say, so many threads! This board is booming beyond recognition and I felt COMPELLED to join you among the ranks. I have been a die hard X-Men fan since I was a kid... collected the comics from 1991 to 2000... and I must say...
This film disappointed me. Now, the post is long, but I do make a point, there's just a lot of build up to get to it
I've read a lot of interesting reviews, most of which people enjoyed the film (at least that's what I'm getting from everyone here and everyone locally around me who went to see the film).
It was said best by a poster on here that
"fox has given us a popcorn action flick"
and me being a comic book enthusiast... I didn't want one.
Needless to say I could write a million things on my frustrations about this film, but here are a few.
There was no "epic" battle, but it was made out to be. The mutants that stormed Alcatraz displayed virtually no "talents" aside from a few (ie: the man who got his nuts kicked in by wolverine)...
Psylocke was not... psylocke, but whatever, that's an entire thread topic there.
Professor X was made out to me (opinion) as a very evil man. I understand their whole storyline of him saving jean from her alternate personality, but still!
... one more for the road, was the special effects... my god, i felt like i was watching Episode 3 all over again. EASE OFF the special effects! There's something to be said about a movie that LOOKS real, and this movie for me missed the boat entirely. Granted, there were parts that HAD to be done and were done well: the bridge, the danger room sequence (which, btw was well done in respect to a danger room sequence idea)... but I mean, jean blowing the doors off in the mansion, magneto crushing the cars in front and behind the armored truck... these were scenes that looked FAKE and really ruined the feel and effect for me.
The movie had a lot of good elements, but from an x-men freak such as myself, it felt drowned out by all the bad elements. The mutant cure, brilliant. Unfortunately not executed thoroughly enough.
I think the largest error in this film was its "appearance" of the ultimate end... the finale... not necessary, and by doing so, they got wreckless with the script... killing off characters mysteriously only to have it open ended, is yes, very comic bookish, but very annoying at the same time. Especially when, being the audience, you now can't even trust the fact when someone is literally incinerated that they will ultimately return anyway!
The movie felt sloppy and an excuse to destroy the characters that myself, and die hard X-Men fans have grown to love and appreciate for decades... I liked X-Men far longer than I'm sure Brett Ratner, or whoever wrote this script has... and to me, Fox and the production company have made one fatal error...
YES - X-Men: "The Last Stand" (in quotes deliberately) was a cash cow, but it was going to be anyway! There was so much hype that you were going to do well regardless. But there was no respect to the characters that made the franchise so popular. If you're going to kill off a character, kill them. Don't do it Matrix: Revolution style where I was waiting for Trinity to die for so long, i could have gone to the bathroom and come back in time, but don't use the cop-out "they're dead!" "no wait! it's an open ended death, they're back!"
And thus coming to my final most important point:
X3 is a film that will get lost along time. It wasn't a well executed story, and has nothing relevant to make it an epic film that people will appreciate for any certain time. Because it's a sequel does not mean you have to treat it like one. It's essentially its own entity, so give it its own life.
Although I hope for X-Men 3 to succeed and do well, I hope that if an X4 is to happen afterwards (which I'm sure it will if X3 makes $250 + Million), that they decide to make a real epic story!
I have my own idea already.
