In my recent wanderings of the Net, I happened upon the trailer for a 1970's horror film titled 'Cannibal Holocaust.' The trailer (especially the score) intrigued me. I went to Wikipedia and did some research. Turns out the film is kind of a cult classic.

According to what I've read, the film's violence is so realistic at points that the director was arrested soon after the premiere on charges of murder of several actors.

Additionally, several live animals were killed on film in rather brutal fashion.

Despite all this, the film apparently has a harsh message of ourselves as a society. It has been dubbed by some to be the 'most controversial film of all time.' It has also influenced films such as 'The Blair Witch Project,' and 'The Last Broadcast.'

After finding all of this, I began to seek for it in stores, but could not find it anywhere. Luckily, Amazon.com proved to be my ally as I found a two disc special edition. I'll be ordering it shortly.

The purpose of this thread is to inform, discuss, and review those rare and controversial films that are so controversial, they simply cannot be found in stores.

Salo.

The director was murdered. Nuff said.

Gotta love that Cannibal Holocaust. Irreversible is another good one.

Also, Anatomy Of Hell I love. Pretty much anything by Catherine Breillat.

Is this where we talk about Song Of The South?:oldrazz:

Phantom of the Paradise. Maybe you can get it at Suncoast, but I think my friend had to order it online. I don't know if it IS rare, but it was very weird.

Yeah, it sure was... Hard to believe it got a PG-rating, actually.

I dig its spirit far more than the actual work itself. The songs range from amusing to head-splitting, and the comedy is hit-or-miss. Plus, lets not get into the hyper-active "acting". I dunno, I watched it and enjoyed myself, but don't see myself revisiting it.

How about Battle Royale?

Wasn't that considered controversial? It's sure as hell rare, I've been looking for that movie to see if it's really everything I've heard it was and I can't find it anywhere.

What's interesting about Salo is that it's part of the Criterion Collection along with another controversial movie, White Dog.

Salò is the best unintentionally hilarious movie ever. Also funny is the fact that they relate the director's death to the movie. Facepalm.

Battle Royale kicks ass.

And yea Cannibal Holocaust is disgusting. Especially the part where that bloke rapes the woman with the rock. So realistic it's scary. And I'm definitely not a squeamish person.

And what about Ichi the Killer? That is one of the most ****ed up films I have ever seen.

Nekromantic.
Dead beat at dawn.
The Manson Family.
La grande bouffe.

Born in Flames
My history teacher, who made it very clear that she was a feminist, made us watch it. It is a horrible movie.

"What are you... I mean... man or woman?"
:hehe:

Yeah. I actually looked that up after I posted it. Seems like it was just, luckily for conspiracy theorists, around the time of the movie and had nothing to do with it.

Based on what Ive read Salo seems to just be a barrage of horrid and disgusting imagery.

Not sure if If this alone warrants a viewing.

I don't get how people say that Salo is funny.

Yea' I've just read up on it. How vile. I'm definitely not a prude or anything like that, but that sounds absolutely disgusting.

Phantom of the paradise was great, one of my favourite De Palma movies.

I read up on Salo. And I want to know why someone would fund, direct, act in, or watch such a sick film.
I cant believe Socrsese and Alec Bladwin tried to argue that the film has artistic merit. It sounds like a softcore snuff film

They argued it had merit when someone was arrested for selling it.
