The Return of Cloak & Dagger

Cecelia was apparently killed off panel in Neverland, though it was never showed in the comics. I keep hoping someone comes in and shows otherwise.

She showed up in NYX, set after her supposed death in Weapon X, but no mention was made of whether she retained her powers after M-Day or how she escaped from Neverland.

Did she really? I don't recall that. What was her role in it? And was that the original NYX or the new one that just came out?

Eh, her powers weren't really that great anyway. Wasn't it just a personal force field or something? I liked her more as a doctor.

Yeah, it was a personal force field, although she was also shown to use it offensively on occasion (like generating it in the form of claw-like energy out of her fingers). But yeah, being a doctor and her general resistance to the whole X-Men lifestyle was what made the character.

It was cool when she used her forcefield offensively as spikes to stab that Neo guy. That was cool, but yeah, her powers were just icing on the cake. Her character itself was what I loved.

And thanks for that info on NYX, I didn't know that. I'll have to check it out.

Getting back on topic, you know what Cloak and Dagger really need, a more fleshed out rogues gallery.

I think for a first arc, it would be interesting if they fought the Manfredi crime family, who are using the same drugs that created Cloak and Dagger to create super powered leg breakers. I would have Joseph Manfredi has the acting head of the family, with his father Silvermane bed ridden but still able to give orders (I never liked cyborg Silvermane.) They could be like Marvel's version of the Sopranos.

Also Shriek could be an interesting villain, she is never used nowadays and she should have a grudge against Cloak. I would make her more sympathetic, something a bit deeper then a generic serial killer, she use her sonic powers to spy into people's houses, in order find abusive homes. She would then murder the abusive parents and steal the children away in order to raise them herself. That would be more interesting the generic serial killer she has been in the past, she resents her abusive her and for a long time in the comics desired to be a mother herself, just on her own twisted terms.

Ironically, they had a semi-decent villain in their second RUNAWAYS appearance, an obsessed fan of Dagger who used MGH to duplicate Cloak's powers to kidnap her from a hospital. It wasn't bad. Seriously, Vaughan likely had a soft spot because some of the better Cloak & Dagger stories came out of his years on RUNAWAYS.

Last I heard about C. Reyes, she was MIA and her brother had joined SENTINEL O*N*E* loosely to try to find her. Not sure what happened to that. For most writers, though, Beast is "enough" of an "all purpose doctor/smart guy" on the team, like Iron Man or Reed Richards, so that he does any task that needs a PhD.

Cloak and Dagger have always maintained a reputation as loners, and Fraction admits that fact made it all the more appealing to see how they would react in a team scenario.

"They're fish out of water because they're not team players, and suddenly they're on a team," the writer points out. "They're taking orders and they're in front of cameras and everything they've spent their lives avoiding they're [now] forced to endure in the interest of being able to stop being hunted. And of course, like every deal with the devil, there's a price."

And that price may have the two questioning their involvement with as the story goes along, as Fraction admits that "they each have moments of asking themselves and asking one another, 'Is this a good idea?'"
Beyond what they bring to the team dynamic, Fraction also wanted to make them a part of the Dark X-Men and "Utopia" in order to shine a larger light on the two characters.

"I think they're tremendous characters, I think they've got a great history and I think they're ripe for this current era we're in," expresses Fraction. "I wanted to use this as an opportunity to dust them off and put them front and center."

According to Fraction Cloak and Dagger don't feel a part of the mutant community that has recently become so concentrated in San Francisco, but that may begin to change with the upcoming crossover.

"No, they don't [think of themselves as part of the mutant community], and that's the thing: in a time when there are so few mutants left, can they afford to not at least acknowledge the existence of this community, this family?" asks Fraction. "I mean, they're not 14 and 15 years old anymore. They're a little older and beginning to sense that like teenage runaways

maybe isn't the wisest, most advisable, [healthiest] way to live a life. And then suddenly they're presented with this opportunity [to join the Dark X-Men]."

Not used to seeing Cloak without his hood. Guess he doesn't have hood-hair.

Dagger's costume clearly plays to Terry Dodson's strengths, with a "boob window". To be fair, though, Dodson has drawn X-stuff before, such as some runs on GENERATION X.

(You can bet in the era of "anything that sold once has to be redone", that as soon as the sales for New Mutants vol. 3-4 tank, GENERATION X will be rebooted next.)

Cecelia Reyes still needs to come back so she and Beast can have hot, steamy doctor-sex.

.

I read that story years ago, so I don't remember, but wasn't that guy killed at the end of the story?

Regardless they really need more of an established rogues gallery, Silvermane and Shriek seem to have the most personal history with Cloak and Dagger out of the established MU villains, so it make sense for Cloak and Dagger to fight those two, even though they can use a bit of a revamp (like getting rid of that stupid cyborg Silvermane.)

I didn't recall the imposter dying. Even so, they could just say his MGH had side effects. Death? Permanent?

As for Silvermane, I always wondered why he didn't just become more cybernetic like Donald Pierce or even the Terminator. Instead he just keeps relying on 80 year old organs in his piecemeal cybernetics. Lame!

Well if he didn't die he can come back, I just don't like it when they bring back dead characters, its almost always contrieved the way they bring them back.

I don't want him to be cyborg at all, he works better as just a nasty old gangster, sometimes its just better to keep a character simple, giving Kingpin the power to fly wouldn't make him better, it would make him worse.

The cyborg thing just doesn't work Silvermane, it never has, they should get rid of it, Silvermane would be far more interesting as just a really old gangster who has a failing feeble body, but can still command fear and respect with his reputation and demeanor. Plus I think it would be interesting to have a look at an organized crime family in MU, Kingpin's organization always came off as an impersonal corporation, so in contrast you can have Silvermane's organization come across as a traditional crime family. You can have a lot of fun with the internal politics of a mafia family, a nest of vipers who don't let being related get in the way of trying to screw each other over. You can add other characters like Caesar "Big C" Cicero, Man Mountain Marko and Dr. Karl Malus to have a really interesting cast of creeps.

If they have keep cyborg Silvermane, they can't find a way to reverse it, then just kill him off and let his son take over.

Cloak and Dagger should have to fight the Manfredi family though, they were the ones who created Cloak and Dagger in the first place, so it be interesting for them fight those guys other then generic drug dealers.

Also I thinkSshriek should return as a Cloak and Dagger villain, she has reason to hate Cloak. I would just focus on her obsession with motherhood, that could make her sympathy and creepy at the same time, making her different from all those " I love to kill people" serial killer villains.

Man Mountain Marko died in AGENTS OF ATLAS #1. A resurrection would probably involve a giant stomach pump. ;)

Silvermane does have other family members; his son, Joseph Manfredi, is Blackwing, after all (basically with a costume and schtick similar to Batman, only evil). He hasn't done much since the Thunderbolts were fighting the Crimson Cowl Masters of Evil. Between that and teaming with Ringmaster, Red Skull & his "Skeleton Crew", and Jack O'Lantern at various points, Joe would have a slew of underworld contacts, costumed and not.

There were quite a few alternatives to fill in for the Kingpin. Bendis chose The Hood.

Awwww :csad:

Web of Spider-Man 82. Man Mountain Marko... one of my first comics ever (number 5 I believe).

R.I.P.

I remember Luke Cage's old lady beat the crap outta that guy in Alias.
