The Return of Hush

i picked up the last two issues yesturday. thought they were really good. i had a question, when did Dini's run on Detective Comics begin? (cause I'm thinkin of pickin up all the back-issues that Dini wrote, cause he's awesome at what he does)

If I'm not mistaken he picked it up right at One Year Later. That first Two-Face arc was great and then it went into Detective and Death and the City. If you really want to get them they're all available in trade.

i'll have to keep an eye out for those. cuz i made the mistake of not gettin into Detective Comics till recently, cuz I sorta wanted to wait and get 'em in paperbacks. but it's easier for me to just get 'em as they are released individually.

Dini's run has been completely brilliant. I honestly hope they keep him around for as long as possible.
His last two issues haven really given the character of Hush a whole lot of depth that was sorely missing prior to this.
I loved the interaction between
Selina and Zatanna too
.
For me personally he has such a great handle on all these characters, something that most writers can only dream of.
Great, great work all round. :woot:

I really like what Dini is doing with Tommy Elliot by expanding on the character's psyche and motivations. I truly hope that Bruce outsmarts him in the end though.

And Ngyuen's art is amazing, although he seems to falter in his renderings of Selina and Zatanna.

Yeah same here. I love seeing flashbacks with him coming up of ideas of how to kill his mother in the hospital and how much of a ******* psycho he really is.

I've been collecting Detective comics since DIni's first issue and it's been awesome. The only issues I haven't read is the Ra's Al Ghul stuff.{BTW should I get the Hardcover?Been Thinking about it}But yea Detective has been the best source for Batman for a long time.Definely better then Morrison's run.

I wouldn't. I didn't like the Ra's Al Ghul stuff really.

I personally have been disappointed with anything Dini has done in conjunction with Batman or Robin, or any other DC book. I think he does much better when they leave him alone, and let Detective be its own thing.

The only Ra's Al Ghul issue you should bother is the epilogue from Detective, with Nguyen (or however it's spelled) just starting as the main artist for Detective.

This is my favorite interior artist right now. AMAZING stuff.

The Ra's Al Ghul stuff seems forced. The simple fact is that Dini writes his Batman very different from Morrison's, and when they try to combine, the Detective issues seem to suffer.

Also, Ra's returned....again....whoop-de-doo. I'm over that. Give him something new to do.....

Although I did enjoy the twist at the end.

I was thinking about getting it, why didn't you like it? Just curious. I don't want to spend money if it's going to be a waste.

Batman: Resurrection of Ra's and Batman and Son(new trades based off his batman run right now) are pretty bad...hell his run on batman right now has just about pissed off every batman fan. You would be better off Bruce Wayne: Murderer or Batman lovers and madmen

Yeah, that's the only worthy issue from the entire Resurection mess. You don't even have to read Morrison's stuff. All one has to know is that Ra's comes back from the dead. Then proceed to pickup the epilogue.

I finally picked up the issue (late, I know), and I was impressed. I don't usually like when Dini's trussed up into Morrison's fiascos but Heart of Hush has been everything I've wanted and more. Kind of like TDK...but in comic form!

The opening sequence was surprising. I admit, for a full 10 seconds I actually thought it was Batman. Damn it. Dini sucked me out of my all-expectant comic nerd bubble. :o

I noticed Scarecrow got a Nolan-esque revamp too. He lost the hat and wears the straitjacket instead. Really nice!

Zatanna was off-model a bit (but maybe that's just her fondness for street clothes), but Selina was hot! The Darwyn Cooke hairstyle is sexy...for a comic book character, that is.

Hush/young Tommy Elliot was perfect. This was the character Loeb never gave us. And one, I don't think he is capable of characterizing. As a child, he's violent, psychopathic and damn clever. His exchange with Crane is chilling. And I think what really sold that moment was the art. His skin and appearance is as innocent as any 10 year old, but that sly, evil smile Nguyen gives him...scary.

Good stuff.

Ya the characterization of Elliot as a child was much better, especially his paranoia. His fear that Wayne was in on making Elliot suffer.

Yes, thank you for bringing that up. Was anyone else reminded of Chef Skinner from Ratatouille in comparison to the young Tommy's increasing paranoia? "No, the rat's over here. Oh no it's here! *snap snap snap*"

He really thinks that Bruce is deliberately causing all of these events in his life to go wrong. And even when both of Bruce's parents die, Tommy Elliot perceives it as a sort of "mocking" to his own current condition with his parents. Bruce is free to travel the world. Tommy is confined to taking care of his damaged mother.

I'm glad that these parallels are being explored in depth. Finally, Hush is beginning to show promise as a villain. The basics were always there: the medical-themed premise, themes of childhood envy, and games. But instead of Loeb's vague and lazy writing, we have top notch characterization and a full fleshing out of the villain's motives.

And this isn't even the first time Dini's revamped a third-tier character. He's been doing it ever since Mr. Freeze...

Ya I was not caring for it until that flashback. "They are in on it I bet wayne was planning this, you need to be one step in front of him, don't let him get the best of you"

i just got the issue and its pretty good, Dini is by far one of the best writers out now. the way he writes Hush is real cool and actually makes him a good foe for Batman. The ending is insane because...

Hush takes out Catwomens heart and she's shown on all these monitors in the hospital

and another thing, I have a feeling Hush must look really messed up because
when Catwomen scratched his face she looked shocked to see what he really looked like, it may be a twist or something, i dont know

all i have to say is buy this and the previous issues because its really really good so far

I think
he made himself look like Bruce Wayne, that is why she was shocked.

^yaa that would be pretty cool and it makes sense

Sometimes I ask myself... 'Why am I a fan of Paul Dini?'...

Then an issue like the latest Detective comes out... and I just :woot:

Any kind sir caring enough to show some scans? :P

he could have very well have made himself look like Bruce Wayne underneath all the bandages.

Dini brings back quality in Batman comics. His run will be remembered for years. By now, I think Englehart and Rogers have been pwned...
