so in the Olympics, we had a situation yesterday in Men's Figure Skating where the favorite to win Gold, and the home country hero, Evgeni Plushenko, was forced to withdraw from competition ( and retire ) right before he was scheduled to skate.
He had injured his back in practice the day before and was feeling pain in the warmups before the event. He's 31 and already has had 12 surgeries I think.
What's even more surprising, though, is that Russia DIDN'T HAVE A 2nd skater in the event!!
Maybe they were so confident that Plushenko was going to win that they didn't bother to enter a 2nd guy in the event. Who knows......
But the situation did remind me a bit of the WWE.
They put so much into 1 or 2 top stars, like Cena. And it seems they don't do a very good job of building up new talent, or else building them up to be top/viable stars, too.
And wrestling, just like figure skating, is a very physically demanding arena.
The top stars aren't going to compete forever. They're going to get injured. or retire.
But if you put all of your eggs into one basket and fail to properly build up a "solid bunch" of newer/younger talent..........you're gonna find yourself in deep ****.
