The "say something nice about Joey Q" Thread

When Joe Q writes and draws a book, at least it doesnt come out very often. Is that nice?

TheCorpulent1, please re-read my posts again before making assumptions. I have not denied JQ any credit that he deserves. But anything more in response to your comments, even to defend against them....would be repeating myself.

I truly believe you misunderstood what I was saying.

Yeah, but it don't mean ****. As they say where I'm from, people will eat a ****-lined shoe if you sell it right.

It doesn't mean ****? Marvel is a business. Sales mean everything when it comes to gauging success. And since Quesada's reign as EIC saw Marvel bounce back from near bankruptcy to become the best-selling comic book company in the industry.

I don't understand why or how some of you guys are finding that so hard to understand.

Though I don't like the man he has many positives:

I like everything he initially did when he came to marvel.
He hires some good talent.
He allowed anniliation.
He's a pretty good artist, though his faces are offputting.
He was a factor in bringing marvel out of the red.
He lost weight.

But thinking of this, the vast majority of his redeemable characteristics came early in his Marvel career, almost all of his recent choices have been @iss poor.

I agree with this. That's what I'm saying.

Dude, you're right though. We do understand that. I'm just saying that cash and bussiness have nothing to do with fans. If we all buy a book to read it and see if it's actually worth hating and it offends us to the point where we are no longer fans....It may have given him lots of sales for that one book, but next time? No. That's less fans.

And even if it happens again and again, in terms of storyline and what's right for characters what are the correct decisions....he's failed.

JQ is a brilliant bussiness man. But he's a horrible story-teller and fan. Marvel can get away with whatever they please.

There could be a story about super hero zombies and it would sell...oh wait :P

Yeah, see, I can't for the life of me understand why any fan would care about sales. I understand wanting a book I like to sell well so that it wouldn't get cancelled, sure, but that's it. What the heck do I care how well a book is doing if I don't actually like it? I couldn't possibly care less how much bank Quesada is making for Marvel if he's doing it with stupid decisions and bad stories! I'm a reader. I'm a fan. I don't base my opinions of creators on how much money they're making for themselves. Why in the name of Buffy would I do that? I base my opinions of creators on what they create.

Wait a second here. Was Marvel ever not the best-selling western comic book company? The choice is pretty solidly between Marvel and DC, and Marvel outperforming DC was always the norm and not the exception.

AMEN. Excellent points all around.

Yeah, one month in the past couple years DC was.

That was at the height of the Infinite Crisis stuff, before everything at DC went terribly, terribly wrong.

I'm most definitely not a fan of Joey Q, but I will say that he's been running Marvel during the creation and continuation of the Essentials volumes and I am happy for that. It is by far one of the greatest ideas to come out of comics in many years.

So good that the idea has spilled over and practically all the publishers are doing versions of them. Heck we're even getting reprints of classics Harvey comics (just picked up my Hot Stuff volume this week) which I never thought would happen.

No way, there are Hot Stuff reprints now? I used to love that little bastard when I was a kid. :D

Gotta dig Devil Casper/Richie Rich in a diaper.

I don't know, I don't have any hard numbers to go by. But it was always my impression that, at least in the 90s, DC was outselling Marvel.

I've always dug the Harvey comics. I've got the Richie Rich collected, the Casper collected and now the Hot Stuff. They're a little more expensive than the Essentials ($20 instead of $17) but they have a few stories in color which is nice.

I don't know if I'd buy whole archives of the Harvey comics, but I used to pick up the issues as a kid and I loved them. I think they might be a part of the reason I love pretty much any kind of for-kids comedy takes on superheroes now, like Franklin Richards: Son of a Genius and Tiny Titans.

I'm the same way. I learned to read on Archie and Harvey comics and am always nostalgic for them and I love Franklin Richards. Tiny Titans has been hilarious so far too.

To quote someone who was better suited than Joephisto..."Nuff Said."

Meh. Marvel started out being run by a hack, and they still are to this day.

So in keeping with the Mencia comparison, does Aristotle think that Stan Lee ripped off other creators or something?

I can't remember his specific complaints about Lee, but I think that was one of them. He hogged credit on several co-creations solely for himself or something. I'm sure Aristotle will be happy to enlighten us again at length.

Uh, from every Stan Lee interview I've ever seen or read (and I've seen a few) he's always mentioned that he's the co-creator of these characters. He also always manages to praise the artists he's worked with. As far as him swiping from others, that's a claim I've never heard before, from anyone in or out of the industry.

Like I said, I don't remember Aristotle's specific arguments too well. I think he talked about them on the DC Comics forum, if you want to do a search.
