ok i thought it would be interesting if we discussed which characters should have the most screen time in the dark knight. obviously bruce wayne should take up more time than any other character in the film, but then who should be next in line? oh and for the purpose of this list i am counting bruce wayne and batman as two separate characters. here it is:

Bruce Wayne (no brainer)

Harvey Dent: dent's character needs to be established in this film BIG TIME.
otherwise it's going to be hard for us to connect with his downfall. I believe his screen time should be second only to bruce wayne.

Gordon: again, i feel that gordon's character needs to be given more time....more time than batman begins anyway. i envisage something bad happening to gordon during this film to make him really become a leader.

The Joker: i feel the joker needs more screen time than batman in this film, in order for us to get to know him, understand him and hate him. i think 3 large scenes along with 4/5 small scenes will work perfectly.

Batman: in my opinion, batman should be used sparingly in this film. not too little, not too much. they got it just about perfect in batman begins. same again please.

Rachel: i am unsure of what they are going to do with the rachel dawes character, so i am unsure of how much screen time she will have. if i was the nolan, i'd have her about here on the list.

Maroni: i'm really looking forward to seeing roberts play this role. as for screen time, i would expect about the same amount falcone got. perhaps slightly more time than falcone, that's if the mob is going to go to war with both batman and the joker.

Alfred: should still have a nice amount of time...like he did in begins. will probably be used slightly less in the dark knight if i was a betting man.

Fox: he seems to have a few new gadgets for bruce to use (new suit/bat pod), so he should be getting a good bit of time. seems to have some scenes in the hong kong shoot too.

Other Characters (Scarecrow/Mayor/A.M.H ect): should all take up about the same amount of time, with the mayor having slightly more screen time than any of the rest.

so if you were nolan, how would YOU list these characters in order of screen time?

your turn people. :woot:

I'd agree with most of that. Maybe switch Maroni and Alfred, but Maroni could be important to the story?
Can't have too much Batman either!

I agree Batman should be seen sparingly. Yep, BB got it right.

Maroni however will get much much screentime than Falcone did. Consider where the first third of BB wasn't really about Gotham, this movie's gonna go straight into the mobster scene with Joker coming to the fore later on.

Alot of Rachael's scenes will be shared with Dent, she doesn't need so much of her own time.

Pretty much agree, although its a safe bet Batman will get more time than in BB with another hour to use.

Definitely a big focus on Dent, from being the new golden boy of Gotham, to politics and making progress, to claiming himself Batman, then everyone blaming the situation on Batman, then Joker pushing him to the edge, he sounds involved in a big way.

Joker should be more of a background character, the story is from Bruce's point of view, and he should be having alot of difficulty finding the Joker. So he can have his big theatrical scenes, but nothing of him planning his mayhem. Have quieter moments with him in 3 in Arkham.

Certainly more Gordon, and less being just comic relief. Seeing as he's still Lieutenant he should have his own Joker investigation in parallel to Batman's throughout the film

Maroni = Falcone. A couple of scenes of him struggling to maintain relevance in Gotham, a scene with Joker

Rachel: Probably involved in most of Dent's scenes, might actually enjoy the character this time

Alfred: No large Alfred scenes, just a presence for Bruce throughout the film

Bruce: 1/3 of the film, a Wayne Enterprises board scene, playboy stuff, alot of time in the cave/penthouse pouring over evidence

Batman: 1/3, Joker investigation, Maroni takedown, low-level criminal stuff, big finale

Mayor: Couple of Dent scenes, TV appearance

Difficult to fit in 2 hours

My top 4 for screen time:
Batman - I think Bat's screen time should be like it was in BB. Just enough to keep us waiting for him to swoop in out of the shadows and bash heads and for detective work.

Bruce - I think Bruce will have a lot of screen time like he did in Begins.

Joker - I dont think he should have a lot more time than anyone else. Why? We already got that in B'89. I think Nolan will give us just enough Joker compared to Bats. I do think Joker will kick Batman's butt atleast once, as well as Gordan's.

Maroni - I think he'll get more screen time than Falcone did. Remember Maroni is our secondary villain and it doesnt look like we're getting a 3rd. Maroni will have his time dealing with Dent, Batman and Joker. I expect a good comforntation between Maroni and his goons vs Batman.

From here I'll go with this order as far as screen time goes:
1. Harvey Dent/Rachel Dawes
2. Alferd
3. Fox
4. Others

The Joker should not have more screen-time than Batman. I want this to be about Bruce Wayne / Batman, I guess it'd be perfect if we he has the same screentime Green Goblin had in Spider-Man.

the way i see it, he will have more screen time than batman, but less than bruce wayne.

no because that was virtually joker 89.

my first post in this thread suggests joker should have three major scenes:

the bank robbery
the penthouse gatecrashing
the final show down

then 4 or 5 minor scenes that last no longer than a couple of minutes maximum:

interrogating the vigilante
calling the radio show
a scene with maroni
and then a couple of scenes of killing loeb and others ect.

the rest of the time he should only be referred to.

in b89, he ran the show.

The Joker should definitely not have more screen time than Batman, the movie is about Bruce/Batman, not Joker.

Joker should have more screen time than Ra's or Scarecrow in Batman Begins, but less than Batman, and maybe less than Harvey Dent. I agree that Dent needs to be well-established in this movie.

I would like to see Gordon have more screen time and become a little "tougher" and more of an authority figure as time goes on.

I think Maroni will be about like Falcone was in Batman Begins, or maybe slightly more, and most everyone else (Alfred, Rachel, Fox, etc.) will be about the same as in BB, although Rachel might get more emphasis, and if Scarecrow returns, it might be more of a cameo. Also, I think Commissioner Loeb might have a little more role.

I like scarecrow's part in begins and I thought his role could look promising for this movie. However, I feel he needs a little less screen time but in that screen time he needs more action as well as a closing to his role in the movies to come.

The Joker should definitely not have more screen time than Batman, the movie is about Bruce/Batman, not Joker.
.

should he have more time that bruce/batman combined? no

should he have more time than just batman? i think yes, but at the same time we are not all supposed to agree on everything.

Batman/Bruce Wayne: More than anyone, obviously it's still his story. A little less than Begins, though.

Alfred: Less than Begins

Dawes: Same as Begins

Dent: Alot, he needs to be developed.

Gordon: Alot, more than in Begins.

Joker: More than Ra's in Begins, but not overdone.

Maroni: Same as Falcone in Begins about

Fox: Less than in Begins

Do you guys agree that Dent's development is more important than any other character in this movie?

BATMAN: More than BB

BRUCE WAYNE: Less than BB, but more "Playboy Bruce Wayne" than in BB

ALFRED: About the same as BB

DAWES: About the same as BB

DENT: A little more than Rachel

GORDON: About the same as Dent's

JOKER: A little more than Ra's in BB

MARONI: A little more than Falcone in BB

FOX: A little less than in BB

I agree with the rest but Joker needs more screen time than Batman? that I don't agree I think Joker's time should be same as Batman's, no more or less and don't forget
Joker is back for 3rd movie as well

Harvey Dent needs more screen time then say Fox or Alfred. in Batman 89 he had three scene so he needs more time.

Ok to settle this argument once and for all, I will say Joker needs equal time to Batman. If not, slightly longer.

I'd be fine for Joker being an "Extended cameo" whose presence is felt through his various crimes Bats investigates.

I think you are going to see similar screentime for the Joker as you saw for Lex Luthor in Returns, which is alot.

1 - Joker
2 - Dent
3 - Bruce
4 - Batman
5 - Maroni
6 - Rachel
7 - Alfred
8 - Fox
9 - everyone else

I think the Joker needs the most screentime, or maybe it's because I want to see the Joker in all his glory. Either way, he needs to be well established so we know how much of a loon he is and how crucial it is he be stopped.
Dent and Bruce are neck and neck as far as second on screentime, but I give the nod to Dent since this movie is going to establish his character. From what I gather Joker has a big beef with Dent so their screentime will coincide somwhat.
Bruce is next, because I believe the movie is going to concentrate more on how hard it is for him to juggle the Bruce Wayne/Batman double life. After him would be Batsy himself. This would pit him with about as much screentime as in Begins.
If the freaks vs mobsters angle is going to be in this movie, I say Maroni is going to get a good bit of screen time. He's going to be taking up the reigns of the underworld now that Falcone is in the looney bin.
Rachel is next. Unless I get to see Maggie Gylenhall naked the Rachel character doesn't need too much screentime like in Begins, even though I think Maggie is a better actress.
Then there's Alfred because I love Michael Cain, Lucius Fox for your new gadgets/Morgan Freeman fix, and then everyone else. Gordon, the Mayor, etc.

If anyone wants Joker in all his glory, watch Batman (1989). This is Batman's movie. Besides, if you show Joker in all his glory in this sequel, what's left for 3?

I think all the screen time should just go to Michael Caine. Not Alfred, but Michael Caine. The whole movie should just be him having a fireside chat with the audience talking about trivial things like which hat of his is his favorite, and his grocery list for the week. There can be a surprise appearance by Paul Bettany as well.

Well, for one, if Dark Knight is as long as Batman Begins, they will have plenty of time if not more for each character. The first hour of Begins was all origin, so no need for that this time.

i dont want the film to be JUST focusing on bruce wayne/batman, i want to get to know the villians too. thats one of the things begins lacked was good screentime for the villians and there backstories. it was all just about how bruce became bats. so i just hope they give joker more or equal screentime, along with other villians.

also, has it been confirmed that scarecrow will make an appearance in TDK?

I definately think both the Joker and Batman should take up most of the screen time. But more than any character in the entire film it should be mainly about the Joker. He's the biggest most anticipated character in this movie and I want to see him as much as possible.
