Why Shin Megami Tensei V Is Being Made For Nintendo Switch. October 24, 2017 . 3:00am

Following the reveal of Shin Megami Tensei V for Nintendo Switch, Atlus shared some additional tidbits in this week’s issue of Famitsu magazine. [Thanks, Ryokutya2089.]

Kazuyuki Yamai, who previously worked as the director of Shin Megami Tensei IV, will lead the development team for Shin Megami Tensei V. The concept behind Shin Megami Tensei V is to look back and reflect on the characteristics of the times.

Atlus decided on going with the Nintendo Switch so that fans can enjoy the game’s story in HD at home on their TVs, while playing portable or tabletop mode to put in the grind to level up and fuse demons at the comfort of your own bed.

We’ll have more information on Shin Megami Tensei V from Famitsu soon.

Tidbits from a Weekly Famitsu interview.

The latest issue of Weekly Famitsu has the first interview on Shin Megami Tensei Vfollowing its formal announcement for Switch yesterday.
Development on Shin Megami Tensei V is being led by ?Kazuyuki Yamai, who directed both Shin Megami Tensei IV and Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne Maniax.
Get the tidbits below.

  • The first Shin Megami Tensei title was released in October, 25 years ago. We wanted to tell everyone that the Shin Megami Tensei series will continue, so we used this timing to make the announcement.
  • One of the directions we are taking with Shin Megami Tensei V is to reexamine the “characteristics of the era.” There are surely many people frustrated by troubles both at home and abroad, such as anxiety about finding a job and getting old, or terrorists and nuclear weapons. I want to make a Shin Megami Tensei game that can sympathize with such an era. That is our challenge.
  • The keywords “Shekinah Glory,” which appeared in the trailer, literally translate to “miracle of God.” When you actually play it and have these keywords in your head, I think you will be able to feel their true meaning.
  • Shinagawa Station is one spot where modern day Tokyo is well represented. Of course, it is also involved in the story.
  • This is the first time Atlus is using Unreal Engine 4. The game development environment has changed dramatically, and you can check what you made immediately on the game screen, allowing us to cut down on a lot of time working over ideas and trial-and-error. I’m really grateful to have been introduced to it.
  • Nintendo Switch is a lovely platform where you can play high-definition quality games and freely take the hardware from place to place.
    • According to Ryokutya2089, the reason Atlus chose to make Shin Megami Tensei V for Switch is because it plays high-definition quality games and you can freely take it on the go. Yamai said he wants to see users play the game in ways such as enjoying the story on their TV, and enjoying side activities such as demon fusion while in bed.
  • Classic elements like demon fusion will of course be included. We are also considering new elements.
  • Since this is the first Shin Megami Tensei game on a home console in a long time, I want to deliver a hybrid game that combines the profound appeal of Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne and the popular training elements of Shin Megami Tensei IV and the like.
  • At this point, we can’t even say it’s “Coming Soon!” yet, so please wait a little while longer.
Thanks, Famitsu and Hachima Kikou.

Turn-based RPG update gets a release date.

Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey Redux will launch for 3DS on May 15 in the Americas and May 18 in Europe, publisher Atlus announced.

The turn-based RPG, an updated version of the 2009-released Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey for DS, first launched for 3DS on October 26, 2017 in Japan.

Here’s an overview of the game, via Atlus:
About
A spatial distortion full of demons appeared in Antarctica, threatening to engulf the Earth in Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey. The United Nations responded by tasking a team of highly advanced specialists with piercing the anomaly and figuring out how to stop it from the source. Well, get ready to don your Demonica once again in this new expanded port: Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey Redux. Expect new story content, additional endings, a new dungeon to explore, and more in the return of this sci-fi tinged Shin Megami Tensei adventure.
Features

  • A Stranger Journey Back – In Strange Journey Redux, you play as a brave United Nations soldier investigating a spatial anomaly called the Schwarzwelt–a dome of dark energy that threatens to consume the world. Inside, you’ll find it home to a nightmare mirror of our own Earth, populated with demons dying to meet you. The game touts brand-new illustrations by Masayuki Doi, updated visuals, UI tweaks, and more to make this journey back into the Schwarzwelt… even stranger.
  • Additional Story Content and a Brand-new Character – You won’t be retreading the same nightmarish path as before because a brand-new character named Alex will play a major role in how the story unfolds. Much about her is a mystery, but there is one thing you know for sure: she’s got a bone to pick with you. Joining her are new demons you might recognize from other Shin Megami Tensei entries, new endings, and a new dungeon to die in–I mean, discover.
  • A True Shin Megami Tensei Adventure – With its twisted demonic sci-fi story, addictive demon-collecting fun, and multiple narrative paths to explore, Strange Journey Redux is an essential Atlus JRPG adventure that can’t be missed!

Three times the amount of effort being put into demons.

SMTV_02-19-18.jpg

Develpoment on Shin Megami Tensei V is fully underway, producer Kazuyuki Yamai told 4Gamer.net in a recent interview.

Here are the notable tidbits:

  • The several core staff that the game started with early in its development is gradually increasing. While more and more people continue to sign on, Atlus has rounded up a considerable amount of staff, and it feels like we have reached a turning point where we can say the game is actually “in the making.”
  • As the first console game in a long time, Atlus wants to create grand content that people can thoroughly enjoy playing on their TV.
  • On the otherhand, Atlus also wants to include a carefreeness only a handheld system can provide, like enjoying demon fusion while laying down.
  • The goal is a title made for both a console and a handheld.
  • Atlus wants to include a lot of demons, as well as make a game suited to the hardware’s specifications.
  • Three times the amount of effort is being put into demons compared to previous titles.
Shin Megami Tensei V is in development for Switch. A release window has yet to be announced.
