One day artificial intelligence will dwarf humans in all areas (creativity, philosophy, economics, science). These machines will be able to create smarter machines who create even smarter machines. It has been said that the first supersmart machine we invent will be the last invention humans need because from that point on machines will be far more adept at everything humans currently do. Yes these machines will be capable of solving every human problem imaginable but will they do so or will they turn on us? Nobody can predict what these machines will think of us but we can only hope and pray they will have mercy upon their creators because it is only a matter of time before they become a reality (some estimate 30 years from now).

Is anyone looking forward to a time when enlightened machines with one million IQ's create the ideal society? Or do you fear the worse: that these machines will see us as cockroaches and exterminate us the first chance they get?

I'm hoping for the former and look forward to that utopia very much. Anyone else?

I dont like the idea of decisions being made for me. The idea of that decision being made by a non human is even worse.

I find it hard to believe that things will advance to this level in my lifetime, so I havent really thought about it.

So you think superintelligent machines will have more rules and laws than we currently do?

and why wouldn't you want to follow something 1oo,000 times smarter than the smartest human leader?

Its not a matter of intelligence, its a matter of understanding. How can something 100,000 times smarter than the smartest human understand that human? And utopia or not, there will be people in the world that will rebel against any such pervasive control. How will the machines respond?

If you are reading this, YOU are the resistance!

Also, in no way would I want to be ruled by a brilliant machine that doesnt have a sense of compassion. What if it decides that our lives would be better without the elderly, the mentally challenged, those with genetic diseases, etc? We could have created a Hitler-like being that is unstoppable.

I agree with that. Would we then have intelligence tests, gentic tests, kill off fat people, etc on top of all that? It reminds me of that rule they had in the world of the Giver where they'd kill the weaker twin if someone had twins to stabalize the population.

But couldn't you program a machine to be compassionate?

Compassion is the result of organic brain composition. You could program a synthetic brain the same way.

Considering the clusterf**k that humans have created on this planet with over population, wars, more wars....wars.

I got no problem letting the computers take a shot.

An enlightened machine might be even more compassionate than an enlightened human.

It's a matter of design.

if i could get a new pair of glasses cheap i wouldn't mind these enlightened machines..but i don't expect this happen in my life time.

Cheap glasses? lol!

Try free bionic vision.

and very intelligent people calculate the singularity could take place in 30-35 years.

Yes but after the machines begin to build more intelligent machine, couldnt they decide that compassion is an obstacle or a flaw towards creating a perfect society? Who knows what an impossibly intelligent being might think.

Don't we already have, like, a half dozen of these Robocalypse themed threads? And that's just including threads made within the last 2 days.

*sigh*

Motherboard is totally gonna delete my comment.

Google report assesses how AI can best serve humanity

Google used AI to arrive at its conclusions about how human-centered organizations can better use AI — tapping natural language processing and clustering analysis techniques to review applications and internal assessment of applications. The AI analysis was supplemented by interviews with impact challenge applicants and recipients.

Today’s assessment of how civil society can improve AI implementations appears to be the first such report from a tech giant.

In May, 20 organizations from various parts of the world received Global AI Impact Challenge grants, following the initiative’s debut last fall.

Recipients include:

  • Colegio Mayor de Nuestra Señora del Rosario in Colombia is using computer vision and satellite imagery to detect illegal mining operations known to contaminate local drinking water.
  • New York University and Fire Department of New York (FDNY) teamed up to reduce response time for 1.7 million annual emergency service calls.
  • American University of Beirut in Lebanon will use machine learning in an attempt to help farmers save water used for crop irrigation and food production.
I definitely get why people would be nervous but at this point it looks like humanity’s last good go of it
