Martin Scorsese circles 'The Snowman'
Director in early talks for Working Title's adaptation of mystery novel
By JEFF SNEIDER, JUSTIN KROLL

EXCLUSIVE: With international crime franchises all the rage these days, Martin Scorsese is looking to get in on the action and make a bold return to the type of films that have defined his career, as he's in early talks to direct Working Title's adaptation of Jo Nesbo's bestselling mystery novel "The Snowman."
While no formal offer has been made, Scorsese has been circling the project for the last month while putting the finishing touches on Paramount's "Hugo." He recently began engaging with Working Title and is now seriously considering making it his next project.

Matthew Michael Carnahan is in talks to adapt the Norwegian novel, which is the seventh entry in Nesbo's series about detective Harry Hole. Set in Oslo, "The Snowman" concerns a missing woman whose pink scarf is found wrapped around an ominous-looking snowman. As Hole begins his investigation, he discovers that the crime appears to be the work of a serial killer.

Working Title's Tim Bevan and Eric Fellner will produce the pic, while Nesbo and Niclas Salomonsson will exec produce.

Nesbo's Harry Hole series has sold more than 5 million copies worldwide and offers similar franchise potential to that of Sony's "The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo," which attracted another meticulous A-list director, David Fincher. Elsewhere, Ridley Scott is attached to direct Sony's American adaptation of the acclaimed "Red Riding" trilogy.

Carnahan, whose past films include Peter Berg's "The Kingdom," Robert Redford's "Lions for Lambs" and Kevin Macdonald's "State of Play," is one of two scribes credited on Paramount's upcoming Brad Pitt-starrer "World War Z."

Paramount will release Scorsese's "Hugo" on Nov. 23. Pic, which stars Asa Butterfield and Chloe Moretz, is aimed at a decidedly younger audience than "The Snowman."

Scorsese and Carnahan are repped by WME.

The description sounds kinda creepy, might have to go and read the book first.

The movie looks swell. I will watch this movie when it is in theaters.

Boy howdy does this sound like the bee's knees. I'll try to catch it when it comes to my nickelodeon.

Sounds interesting, Scandinavia is becoming the go to place for book adaptions, I wonder if Scorsese will transplant it to the US. Also, is it a horror or a thriller? I'm hoping the latter.

"Harry Hole?"

Hehe

Worst detective name ever, I'm sure Leo will insist on it being changed when he signs up for the lead role.

Harry Hole?

Sounds like your standard Scandinavian crime novel but I don't mind that the books from here is popular now, but I'd rather see Scorsese adapting The Hypnotist instead of Hallström, now that would've been better.

Oh, man I love the sound of this and can definitely see Scorsese taking this on. He hasn't quite done a serial killer thriller.

"Al Pacino, Robert DeNiro, and Joe Pesci, together for the first time, directed by me, Martin Scorsese, which is a crime drama that is right up my alley? No thanks, I'm more interested in doing a pop novel featuring a character named Harry Hole, right after I'm done doing my children's movie." - Martin Scorsese

Marty has like 10 projects in line so we will see. In still waiting for Frankie Machine.

Sounds good. But Im still looking forward to The Irishman

I'm hoping Scorsese gets to direct this movie. I've enjoyed all of his movies & i'm confident he'll do an exceptional job with this one.

Just because a movie would star those actors doesnt mean it would automatically be better than a movie you dont know anything about. Just look what happened the last time De Niro and Pacino worked together.

Scorsese is confirmed to directing the adaptation as his next project.

Norwegian author Jo Nesbo and Brit production company Working Title Films have confirmed that Martin Scorsese will direct the feature film adaptation of Nesbo’s global bestseller The Snowman.

Scorsese had been circling the project for some time now but Nesbo had to give final approval for the director. He has done so, confirming to a Swedish newspaper that Scorsese will direct the first English-language adaptation of his work. Nesbo added that he would not insist Snowman be shot on location in Olso, where the book is set.
