Exactly, those were just the remaining Capos and higher ups. Thus the lack of soldiers we have seen such as Benny Fazio, Tony's driver, that kid Tony beat up during part one of Season 6.

I wonder how things would've played out if the Phil hit was successful.

I figure one of two things would've happened.

1) Based on Phil's bid for power earlier in the season, he has pretty broad support in New York, so someone in Jersey would've gotten whacked over it. Probably not Tony as then you would simply have a never ending cycle of retaliation...but someone like Silvio to send a message, then Tony and the new don would work out a peace agreement.

2) Tony has mentioned in the past that Little Carmine had the support to be Johnny Sac's successor, so with the lack of Phil, Johnny, Gerry, Rocco or any other real successor Carmine who seems to dislike blood shed would've been forced to take over as the only heir to the throne and ended the war.

It really depends on who took over. For example, if Little Carmine took over and almost immedietly whacked the higher ups who were loyal to Phil, he would've sent a message that the Soprano family is not to be ****ed with. Now if a Capo who was incredibly loyal to Phil but hot headed took over, Tony would likely be dead rather quickly and a perpetual back and forth war would break out. If someone loyal to Phil who is smart and with a cool head took over, Silvio or Paulie would get whacked to send a message and then peace negotiations would open, Tony would pay restitution and it would end.

Although there have been references to the "five families", it seems Luppertazzi is dominant (similar to the Genovese family in New York today). Carmine Lupertazzi died in season 5. He was the head. Johnny Sacrimoni took his place. Now Phil is the Don of the Luppertazzi family.

Thats what I said. But the fact that the other five families are such nonfactors, implies to me that Lupertazzi is the dominant family much like Genovese is today or Gambino was under Gotti.

Point taken....I never understood that about the whole Mafia thing....The Sopranos are clearly the dominant force in NJ and yet there under the Demao Crime family.

The Sopranos were a key faction in the DiMeo Crime Family, running two separate crews led by Johnny Boy and Junior, and also had longstanding ties with the five New York Families (particularly the Lupertazzi Crime Family led by Carmine Lupertazzi).

DiMeo is an honorary name. Just as Gambino was at its height under Gotti, it kept the name Gambino out of respect for its founder. Originally DiMeo ran it, he was sent to prison. Jackie Aprile was named acting don, he died of cancer, Junior took over as a puppet leader. He tried to whack Tony whom the capos supported. Tony wiped out Junior's crew and took control. Keep in mind, as far as I know, Dominic DiMeo is still alive in prison, therefore, both Junior and Tony were/are ACTING bosses, not official bosses. Therefore it technically still is DiMeo's family.
