Bitten by a radioactive lobster. :lmao:

Alongside Greg Weisman, we welcome the Spectacular Spider-Man himself, Josh Keaton! Together, we all delve into the penultimate episode of the first season where we explore Spider-Man’s origin, Uncle Ben, and everything else that makes Peter Parker tick. We also discuss Josh’s other gigs whereupon he brought the web-slinger to life, particularly in the realm of video games “Shattered Dimensions” and “Edge of Time”, where Josh worked with previous Spider-Men such as Christopher Daniel Barnes.

Awesome! Thanks for posting this, Greg.

I've been itching to do a re-watch of this so hopefully tomorrow I can do that. After that time for a re-watch of young justice as well.

No plans to stop. "Final Curtain" or bust!

Josh Keaton was excellent in this most recent podcast for "Intervention." Are there plans to have him return for another?

Any chance you guys can get Peter MacNicol for the Master Planner arc? That'd be killer to have him on for "Reinforcement" or "Shear Strength."

If you haven't already done so, Itchy, I highly recommend giving the podcast a listen. It's a real treat to hear Greg talk in depth about the show.

I really should, haven't before. I'll carve out some time and give it a listen soon.

Awesome! While I have yet to listen, I've known about the podcast for awhile and I think it's really incredible what's been accomplished with it.

We are joined this month by Ben Diskin, the voice of Venom, alongside Greg Weisman. We discuss adapting Venom, as well as Gwen Stacy, not to mention Ben’s start in the industry and his affection for Venom. We bring the premiere season to a close in a podcast you won’t want to miss.

Finally finished the series and how bittersweet I feel over it.

The series is just perfect. The characters are perfect, the stories were perfect, the merging of characters into one is subtle and works quite well within their continuity. They gave themselves so much opportunity to explore Liz further, possibly a relationship with Harry in the future. How about the Death of Gwen when the inevitable return of Norman took place? Cpt. Stacy knows Peter/Spidey and I would've loved to see how that would've played out. Eddie is away and we got a Cletus appearance! Ugh.

  • What happens with MJ with Mark gone?
  • Gwen/Peter being stuck
  • What about Emily? Does she run OsCorp?
  • Various seed-planting including Warren teaching Peter and Gwen, Connors family headed to Florida, Scorpion, Hobgoblin, Prowler, etc. etc.
Ugh. So many good things and so many planned good things (multiple seasons AND multiple DVD features) all gone to waste and now we're stuck with an abomination of a Spider-Man show that took its place and doesn't have any sign of ending or being cancelled. I lost TASM and SSM and in its place is Homecoming and Ultimate (INO). What a bummer.

Still, long live The Spectacular Spider-Man.

Was this your first time viewing the entire series?

What are some of your favorite episodes and/or moments in the show?

No, I watched it when it first aired (a lot younger then) but only caught little clips of it until buying the blu-ray last year. Shame it didn't come with the slip cover. :oldrazz:

Favorite episodes from Season One would be: Natural Selection, Catalysts, Reaction, The Uncertainty Principle, Group Thearpy, Intervention and Nature vs. Nurture.

Love what they did with Lizard, Ock is done well, MJ gets her iconic appearance done justice, the entire Goblin Arc was a highlight and I love how they handled Sinister Six. Symbiote saga was also one of the highlights for me -- and the creator isn't even much of a Venom fan. Goes to show it's your job to take something you dislike and make it good for the greater good.

Season Two would be: Blueprints, Reinforcement, Shear Strength, First Steps, Growing Pains, Identity Crisis, Gangland, Opening Night and Final Curtain.

LOVE how they did Mysterio, as the comedic fraud take on Mysterio is the only one I really like. Shame that Martin Starr is playing Mr. Harrington because I think he'd nail Mysterio like this. The ones I left out were good too, but those are the standouts.

I just love how the Spider-Man mythology was handled. I like how there was a combination of things in the series that you could pin-point with specific source materials. 616, Ultimate, Raimi, etc. Also love the mixes of certain characters to make 'em feel more proper or the overall heart and respect that went into this show. Absolute travesty that the series is done because it's definitely one of my favorite takes on Spider-Man, quite honestly.

I can't tell you how much I wish Sony still had the animation rights. If this series was still going on today, I'd drop the films 'cause as a life-long Spider-Man fan (from birth to now), this is all I would need (well, this and the comics that I'm pursuing).

Reading Greg's ideas/plans on his blog is so saddening 'cause I wish we could've gotten the DVD films or just more of the show. :csad:

Ah, ok, gotcha. Yeah, they only sold the Blu ray with a slip when it was initially sold in stores that April prior to the US release of ASM2. Now, to get one you'd have to wait until a sale goes up on ebay or other comparable site.

Nice lists. I love how there's really no bad episodes in this series. It was very consistent in the quality that ranged from good to great. Maybe there was one or two I'd call just average.

And I think this is why Weisman and even Cook are put on a pedestal. They not only love the source material but they also knew how to take things that weren't done so well in the past, i.e. symbiote/venom and turn it into something that actually works and makes you think it's a good idea. Making changes while improving elements of either the characters or the story should be the backbone of any and all adaptations. The creators of TSSM succeeded in this effort and then some.

Part of his plan, Weisman pulled from various sources to make a very coherent story. He stated that it didn't matter what source an idea came from so long as it was the best option for how to tell the story. I.e. taking so many ideas from what Raimi did with the origin. Per Weisman there was a more personal and less coincidental account of how Ben was killed in Raimi's first film over how it was originally handled in AF #15. There's a reason so many, including myself, who believe TSSM is a definitive take on the character outside the comics.

Greg even attempted to continue the show in comic book form as he's done with his Gargoyles series however Marvel turned him down.

Agreed. There is literally no "BAD" episode of this show! The same can't be said about Spider-Man TAS or even the hallowed BTAS from the 90s. Spider-Man TAS was good, BTAS was great, but this trumps them both easily IMO.

I used to think that Spider-Man TAS had the greatest Venom adaptation--and it did, until this show. The way it did Venom (minus the stupid extra-mouth-shapeshifting thing) was hands-down, far and away, the best Venom story we've seen in any media.

That's another thing I love about this show. There was never any pretentious adherence to one source or another. They took what worked best, mixed it all together and made the perfect Spider-Man show.

Indeed. Same here. I may even go as far as to say definitive outside of the Lee/Ditko/Romita stories. It's that good.

Greg even attempted to continue the show in comic book form as he's done with his Gargoyles series however Marvel turned him down.

:(

I still prefer the TAS depiction of the black costume saga (especially the opening with the space shuttle crash), but I agree that SSM's Venom as a character is the superior version.

I loved this take on Venom, but the "bro" stuff really got under my skin. TAS slightly edges it out for me.

The first season was in a bargain bin at a Best Buy I frequent. Given the quality of the show, I'm tempted to buy it, though I'm curious how often I'd come back to rewatch it, even with its stellar quality. It didn't come with any extras, and none are needed, but I wonder whether I could just save the cash and find the episodes online instead, saving the money.

So, you've only watched the first season?

I'm a bit biased when it comes to this show but imo the Blu ray is totally worth the purchase.

But yes, you could obviously save money by watching episodes online. I think most are on YouTube. Me though, aside from my love of the show, I'm also a bit old school in that I'd prefer to own a physical copy of something I enjoy. I also subscribe to the idea that if you love something, there's no better way to show your support than with your wallet.

No, I've seen both seasons, but only the first season complete was available in the bargain bin.
