I really did love how MacNicol used the same voice for Otto but with a great deal of difference. He had the timidness and cowardice of Otto, but really delved into the 'I'm better than you' genius tone that Doc Ock always has.

Yes, I agree. In that podcast, they talked about MacNicol's delivery of Ock's line "But...I've been good." And how in a lesser actor it would not have come across so well--the humanity in his performance. Then after the accident he made that transformation into "I will not be weak" and "Call me, Doctor Octopus." Another line that MacNicol pulled off brilliantly.

Watching Catalysts again, and Harry squeezing the punch, painting his hands purple... very foreshadowing.
Knowing the outcome makes this a less spectacular mystery, but I like it.
If only TASM2 took the route this -and before, the 90s show- did by such smokes and mirrors approach, the story could have been more impressive, if handled properly.

The definitely did a good job of making the mystery something that played out to where even longtime fans of the CBs, that knew Norman is the GG, were left wondering who it could possibly be. I remember back when the show was airing how it was often a discussed topic. There was even a moment in the final episode that made you think it might even be Harry's mom, lol. The writers on the show deserve some serious kudos for how they were able to twist the story a bit to create the mystery and in the end keep faithful to the original stories/characters.

I honestly thought with ASM2 they'd have taken the same approach especially since they finally got Chris Cooper in the role. But they squandered that and imo wasted the talents of Cooper.

Still gonna get the blu-ray of this.

Do you already own the DVDs?

Get it, ASAP.
Worth it.

What Aziz said.

They even adapted the idea of the Goblin identity is a long kept secret plotwise, that is the most faithful adaption of any Goblin story, especially the original.
And probably the most fun version.

A most unfortunate turn of events.

It may not be a popular opinion but I believe TSSM's version of the 'Goblin mystery' was actually better than the original in 616.

A most unfortunate turn of events.

Indeed. Oh well, looking forward to better things.

Definitely plan on it, as well as an omnibus of either ASM or USM.

Still gotta get around to reading my S6 comic as well. :argh:

Do you already own the DVDs?

No, as they are not available locally for me. Also, if I have the option of Blu-ray, DVD or a combo-pack, I usually go with Blu-ray or the combo pack. Trying to start a little collection, ya know? :oldrazz:

What Aziz said.

:funny: Got'cha both.

I have several omnibuses and if I can help in your decision making on that I'd be glad to help. Depends on what you're going for but I can't recommend ASM Omnibus #1 more highly. All the Lee/Ditko stories are collected here (a big part of the inspiration for TSSM I might add) and even after all these years, the stories are still so good.

I'd also recommed the ASM Omnibus #2 which collects all the Romita Sr comics however due to a low supply, they are very expensive. If you can find one for around $150, go for it.

I just got the Roger Stern Spider-Man omnibus recently and it is absolutely awesome. Tons of goodies here and it's gotta be one of the best runs Spider-Man has ever had in comics. Romita Jr does some of the artwork and it's great and a decent portion of the book covers Stern's Hobgoblin stories. Awesome, awesome, awesome.

I've also got the USM Omnibus. Bagley's eye-candy artwork is worth every penny and the stories are good, but imo, nothing beats classic Spidey.

Ok. I only asked cause many folks don't like 'double-dipping' with certain things. From the technical standpoint, the BR of TSSM makes a very notable improvement over the DVD versions. It even shows improvement when compared to the HD broadcasted versions. Color saturation, clarity, definition, black level, shadow detail, etc. are boosted with great emphasis thanks to the power of the 1080p transfer. Some issues exist such as aliasing and some very minor color banding but nothing distracting. It's what you'd expect from these types of transfers on a 2D animated show.

Unfortunately there aren't any additional extras included outside of the two 'making of' featurettes included on the 1st season collection DVD. Well, there's a music video that has the full version of the title credits song that wasn't on the DVD but...no other 'making of' type stuff, no included artwork or concepts, no commentary, etc. I'm incredibly biased when it comes to this show however the BR is totally worth the purchase imo. You can't go wrong with 26 episodes of pure awesome-sauce :woot:

Popular or not, I agree with this.

I agree with this too. While the 616 mystery was just that, a mystery of who the Goblin was...TSSM took it to the next level! The mystery factored into the story more and was really twisted imo.
Harry's downfall with the Globulin Green, Norman hurting and setting up Harry as the Goblin and even the Chameleon reveal.

Yeah, pretty much for everything you just said. Getting an omnibus of early ASM seems like a no-brainers, haha.

I'd also recommed the ASM Omnibus #2 which collects all the Romita Sr comics however due to a low supply, they are very expensive. If you can find one for around $150, go for it.

I could also get one used, as my Sinister Six hardcover was used but still in quite good condition. It was a gift from my gal on Valentine's Day. :yay:

I'm mostly going to be using Amazon to get stuff, since all I'll need is a gift card which I could get at my local Sobeys. :oldrazz:

That's also on my wishlist, haha. I have a bunch of Spidey comics (either volume or omnibus style) that I'm looking at, so I'll post it in a Spoiler tag since there's quite a bit.

Glad to know it's good!

I've also got the USM Omnibus. Bagley's eye-candy artwork is worth every penny and the stories are good, but imo, nothing beats classic Spidey.

USM was basically my Spidey growing up, so I'd mostly get it for the stories and nostalgia again, haha.

Sounds like you have yourself a keeper there :woot:

Used is also a good option but for me, I go for new. Just my preference, I guess. IMO, all of the omnibuses are great. I prefer having all these stories in one book or several large books. I don't own many single comic issues and it sounds weird but I'm not much of a collector, so, the omnibuses are a great thing for me. The only downside is they are pretty hefty and not a comfortable read while sitting in bed, lol.

Again though, go for either ASM#1 or #2 or Roger Stern's first, if you can. Not putting USM down but those classic stories are just amazing.

Great stuff, man. :highfive: Wish we could've got more from such an underrated show.

It's a shame. In the end it wasn't ratings or bad reception that killed the show, it was just a case of bad timing, really. Had Sony not sold the animation rights back to Disney to aide in continuing their Spidey live-action films, the show probably would have at least reached it's 5 season plan.

I bolded all the titles that I currently have. No complaints, they're all good. I love most of them for different reasons.

Not sure what else to add to your list....

I thought the ive been good line was so weird :oldrazz:

I recently rewatched the show and fell in love with it again. I have a few gripes with it like Eddie Brock and venom being annoying as hell. Colonel Jupiter I could have also done without. And max's super brief intro felt a little rushed as well. Especially when so many villains are built up to. But I loved, loved, loved Gobby in this though. He was such a fun evil character to watch. The rest of the rogues were also well extremely well done. I'm gonna rewatch it again, I have that itch.

Also, I love the use of Liz in this series. She was actually a pretty sweet girl who seemed like she genuinely cared about Pete towards the end. I usually don't care about the relationship side of things, especially with someone I know Pete will never truly commit too but I still felt sorry for her when she got dumped. Look at me talking about this show like it's a soap opera :b

It was definitely bittersweet to reach the end knowing such a great series never got the closure it deserved. Rip in peace SSM

In the end, I think this show was just far too good for it's own good.

Question, what was everyones least favorite episode of the show? Mine was the Molten Man episode.

The colonel Jupiter episode by far.

It was Doc at his lowest. And gave a great contrast to the weak Otto transforming into the strong Octopus when he owned the megalomaniac persona. But yeah...it was weird, lol.

It's an easy show to fall in love with. Venom is annoying period. But at least here they did more with Eddie and Venom than the comics ever really did. I like how they used the idea from Ultimate that Eddie and Peter are childhood friends, their parents knew each other and fathers worked together and their parents died in a plane crash. It gave more weight to the relationship. The reasons for Eddie hating on Peter and owning the Venom persona were also done better. Eddie really was a silent crazy person...he just needed the right trigger to bring it out. His fall was interesting to watch. And Venom actually threatening the people Peter cared most for was an upgrade.

I'm not crazy about the Col Jupiter stuff either but it was good fuel for JJJ and of course had the show continued we would have eventually seen Man-Wolf.

GG is the best. Truly menacing, evil, crazy and scheming. All the villains were really well done imo.

There's another testament to this show. I've talked about this before but I'll revisit it again cause I really enjoyed how it was done.

So, we all know where Peter and Gwen will end up. We know, from the reading the books, that those two become a couple and we all know how that ends. But what this show did was take 'what we know' and twist it to the point where it made the build-up to those things feel interesting and new, like we are experiencing the story over again for the first time. That's not an easy task, imo.

One of the things that we often will see in a show or a movie is that the writers/director will take the main protagonist and the female lead and get the audience rooting for them. Often we'll see those two share common interests, have a palpable sexual chemistry, etc. To create some tension though, the audience will want these two to be together but the writer will have them be in a relationship with someone else. However, many times what we'll see is the writer will make the main protagonist's girlfriend to be unlikable. She may have an annoying personality or not be supportive of the MP or maybe even treat him like crap. It makes it easy for the audience to want the main characters to be a couple and to root for them. TSSM took a harder route. Even though we know Gwen and Pete are going to be together, that they should be together because not only of what we know but because they share that chemistry, have things in common, etc. the writers put Liz and Peter together. Liz starts off as unlikable because she seems shallow--the pretty cheerleader who is only interested in being popular and talks down to the commoners. But she changes. Liz morphs into a very sweet girl. She's attracted to Peter, they both share a good chemistry, she's very supportive of Peter and his talents, she is very forgiving--Peter misses several dates due to 'work' and she kisses him and let's him know that she's thankful he even made it to her home at all. Liz is a great match for Peter. So, it's not so easy just to root for Peter and Gwen to end up together because Liz is actually a very likable character and one that is almost too good for Peter.

I've always loved how they took the time to develop her and make it difficult for us, the audience, to watch her be this wonderful girl for Peter and then knowing he's eventually going to break it off with her.

In the end, I think this show was just far too good for it's own good.

Question, what was everyones least favorite episode of the show? Mine was the Molten Man episode.

Hmmm. My least favorite would have to be Probable Cause.

This question is harder to answer than favorite episode.
I think I too will go with Subtext.

I think the thing about Eddie that annoyed me was his dudebro way of speaking and the overuse of "bro". It kinda bothered me too, that he should know the situation that Pete is in and he still treats him like crap for taking the photos. But it worked for the added drama of Peter being shunned for a while. And his voice as Venom was god awful. I wish they could have done something better :b
It took me out of the show a bit to be focusing on how dumb venom sounded. It seems a bit trivial but I think his character could have been better with a different more ominous voice.

And you put the relationship with Liz so brilliantly
The writers definitely cared about characterizations and character arcs. I would love for Liz to be included in the same way in the new series, that'd be awesome.

So in the same vein as the last question, what's your guys favorite SSM episode? It's a tough choice but I think Shear Strength is my favorite. The 'this be my destiny' scene was frickin glorious!

The fact that they improved upon both Eddie Brock and Venom as characters in TSSM above what we got in 616, I'd say it's mostly positive. However, the whole 'bro' thing is something I find to be annoying too. Venom's voice was fine, imo. Could have been better, I suppose, but this is also a character that I care very little for anyways so I really don't critique him as harshly as I would GG, a character I care a great deal for. That make sense? I just look at the whole of it with Venom and see an overall improvement for the character and that was good enough for me. Otherwise, had they not even included the character at all, I'd been ok with that too.

Thanks for the appreciation of my Liz opinion. I wasn't sure what I wrote was a good enough explanation of why I liked both her and her arc in this series and how it was also a testament to the prowess of the writing and production values. tl;dr version--the writers did a tremendous job of getting the audience to like Liz and make use feel sad when Peter finally decided to be with Gwen.

Favorite episode?? I'd have to go with Gangland though I really love so many of the episodes and Shear Strength is in my top 5.

I just recently watched this entire series a few months ago. For some reason I didn't remember watching it when it was on tv, but after hearing everyone rave about it, I had to buy it. Found the complete series (only 2 seasons ) on blu-ray on Amazon for like $20 so I had to buy it. Such a great show and definitely my favorite Spidey cartoon, although The Animated Series still has that nostalgia feel to it.

Any parts of the show that you found to be noteworthy? Favorite moments? Favorite episodes? etc.
