I've been a long-time reader of the SHH forums, especially the wrestling thread. You guys always seem to nail my opinion on the head so I haven't ever felt the need to sign up. However, this week has been so crazy that I want to join in on the discussion.
I'm incredibly saddened to hear about the Warrior's passing. I began watching wrestling again in '98 when Stone Cold and The Rock were on the rise. When I was even younger I have vague memories of cheering Randy Savage and Jake Roberts in the WWF. My brother and I had these stuffed wrestling buddies, and when we weren't inflicting pain on one another, we would beat the holy heck out of these things. Hogan never won if we had something to say about it.
But I became obsessed in '98. I saved up my allowance for weeks because I wanted to see some older matches. WWF had just released the remastered Wrestlemanias on VHS. After weeks of compiling dishwashing money, I begged my dad to order me Wrestlemania VI off wwf.com. This was back when we still had dial-up and I think my dad was very hesitant to put his credit card information on the net. Nevertheless, he did it because I was so insistent.
I knew nothing about the Ultimate Warrior, but the awesome VHS box, the rad face paint, the bright colors, the wild hair. To say I was intrigued would be an understatement.
The day the box arrived on our doorstep was one I'll always remember. It was immediately opened and thrust into our VCR. And I sat in awe for three hours, watching this different, yet still thoroughly entertaining, version of wrestling. The pace was toned down, but the Ultimate Warrior was unlike anything I'd ever seen-- a cartoon character brought to life.
While I'm a bit of a "smarter" wrestling fan now, I still appreciate his matches. Sure, he no-sells like crazy. Yeah, he's not the best or anywhere near a good mat technician. But he had a character, actually, he was the character. Seeing him lift both of those belts up high at the end of Wrestlemania VI will forever be etched in my head. I've only recently started watching WWE again. I stopped in 2004, but have kept up with the product through online articles and this forum. It's pretty sad when discussion about wrestling is more exciting than actually watching. The shift over the last half-year or so has me pumped, and my subscription to the Network has caught me up. I hope that these new stars are given the ball and we can start having more fun.
You'll always be remembered, Warrior.
