The good ol' days.......... riiiiiiiiiiiight. :down

Man black folks really caught it back then. Ebony White was the worst.

Thank goodness for Lee & Kirby.....

talk about starting a thread in ignorance

in the 30s and 40s, black people (as well as other minorities) were often drawn as caricatures. Will Eisner went off to war where he actually served with many black men he grew to be friends with, and when he returned home and went back to drawing, he realized how terrible the caricatures he'd been participating in were, and he felt ashamed of himself. Subsequently, he began to portray blacks in an excedingly positive light, leading the way for the rest of the industry (as he would do many times) away from those racist portrayals

so, seriously, don't you DARE **** on the memory of Will Eisner

I'm a black man!! Are you??????? Don't you come in here telling me that I need to feel good about what he did!! Goodie for him that he finally got an education!!

This is a subject that can be discussed openly. Eisner was not the only one. There were more.

Know any????

The man repented and was pretty much the leading man in comics innovation. Don't **** with Eisner.

Even though he repented, Ebony White was still a pretty mean caricature.

It was brutal. But as it was said, there were others. We've come a long way.

Some of that is still happening......

I hope you're just....making a badly formed joke.

So wait, first you try to slander Eisner, then when you were proven dead wrong, you're moving onto professional sports teams?

This isn't a thread for Misc. Comics, this isn't a thread that should be titled The Spirit.

And yeah, yeah, I know, I'm not black. But I know foolishness when I see it, and don't make be get my black cousin Edd Extraordinaire down here to set you straight.

It's funny that the same day you post this, this article comes out.

Frank Miller to Helm The Spirit
Source: The Hollywood Reporter July 18, 2006

Ahead of the public announcement at Comic-Con in San Diego on Saturday, The Hollywood Reporter has revealed that Frank Miller will adapt and direct The Spirit, created by Will Eisner and one of the most influential comics of all time.

Odd Lot Entertainment's Deborah Del Prete and Gigi Pritzker will co-finance and produce. Also producing is Batfilm Productions' Michael Uslan. Batfilm co-founder Benjamin Melniker will executive produce. Odd Lot's Linda McDonough and Batfilm's FJ DeSanto will co-produce.

Uslan said Miller was the ideal choice for the project. "What makes Frank's involvement with 'The Spirit' particularly poignant was his special relationship with Will Eisner, captured last year in the book 'Eisner-Miller,' " he said. "You have two of the medium's greatest storytellers of sequential art and cinematic comics discussing the compelling and controversial art form."

That second pic is clearly photoshopped--I mean, the shading styles are completely different.

Sorry JRK, but it isn't.

You're s**tin' me. It's either that or Eisner meant for the cover to look like crap--if the...characteracture was ahead of Spirit, wouldn't he be shaded more than that?

Celldog

what was done back then was not right, but he chose to change. Part of the reason racial tension still exists today is because it's swung in the other direction. A TINY minority of black people such as this prick insist on playing the race card every five seconds, they make it twice as hard for everyone else within the community because while attitudes have changed they still think they can use the guilt ta make them seem important, it's look at me time. **** YOU! Now all it takes is one rascist joke for me to knock someone the **** out cause that ain't right, BUT EQUALLY people like YOU need to grow up dip****, this thread has no purpose other than to say that one of the greats of comic books was rascist scum because they followed convention through ignorance of an issue. The fact that the man did a complete u-turn as soon as he got eductated first hand on the issue shows a great deal of balls given the period of history he was living in. Shut the **** up and never darken my door again you pathetic little whiner.

YOU DIDN'T LIVE THROUGH IT, YOU HAVE NO RIGHT TO COMPLAIN ABOUT IT!

You want to eradicate racial tension...stop viewing people as black/white/chinese. Stop legislation to the point where you have to have 3 black, gay women for every 10 white people. There's no law for a minimum number of white people and neither should there be, but the current system is reverse rascism. If 5 black people are most qualified give them all five positions available, If five white people are more qualified, give them the jobs. WE NEED TO REALISE THAT WE ARE ALL PEOPLE. YOU ARE NOT A BLACK, I AM NOT A WHITE...WE ARE BOTH JUST PEOPLE.

END OF DISCUSSION

I don't get it... why would anyone get all worked up that the Spirit had a pet monkey

Celldog, you have plent of stuff to ***** about. Eisner made a mistake, he rectified it now go to hades. Have a nice day.:)

I dont even know what to believe about Celldog. You talk about religion he brings out the chrisitan card. You talk about Israel, hes jewish, now hes black. Im so confused.

Why do white people have such a hard time talking about this stuff?? I think racial sterotypes in comics past is good topic for those open-minded enuff to deal with it. Eisner is not some god that can't be critcized,... But he was not the only one........remember Chop Chop???

Yes, weve come a long way. Because that happened in the past. Theres nothing we can do about the past. How about you think about the present? Think about the future? God, can we close this thread?

Only a 12th level intelligence could understand. Some things are better left alone. :)
