So there's a new Dragonball Z animated movie coming out. used to love the show as a kid.

Um... Yeah, never got into the Jason version, but FIRESTORM in general? Awesome character when used right. And who over a certain age can forget his part in the Death of Superman story on the SUPER POWERS: GALACTIC GUARDIANS show?:[YT]Q4BCSzuOfgo[/YT]I think the story got away from the writers in the tale end of the 1980's run of comics and no matter what they try they can't seem to be able to recapture that magic of his early and middle run, when Firestorm was a real comic book superstar. As some have said, the best "Marvel Character" Marvel Comics NEVER made. I know there was a version where ChrisCross did the art but I never got a chance to check it out. Here's hoping Firestorm gets some movie as well as TV love.

It was a different time Aziz. The Timm show, as much as I dislike HOW MUCH they Nerfed Superman, was correct that you couldn't easily do a Pre-Crisis styled Superman show with that level of power. That was indeed a smart move on the part of DC back then in the 1980's (It didn't affect the Super Powers show since frankly, the whole of the SuperFriends series of shows from start to finish was stuck in a very basic Silver Age mode that was even more childish than most stories published during that time.), to jettison a lot of the more ridiculous powers ( Time Travel, Super-Ventriloquism, total recall of memory, ect.) and concentrate on the key physical and sensory powers. He was still immensely strong (In one Action Comics of the Post Crisis era Byrne has him self narrate saying he could lift many THOUSANDS of tons, so way stronger than say, Hulk or Thor) but even that isn't pushing planets out of their orbit strong. Such contrivances eventually get in the way of both consistency and good stories, which since previous posts brought it up plague DBZ. When Dragon Ball and then Dragon Ball Z first hit the shores I definitely came to it with the eyes of a Superman fan and found much to appreciate. I loved the action, thought the characterization and other things is kind of off putting on multiple levels ( Look... Comic Superman has a no kill rule, and that can complicate a story, but there is some kind of moral reasoning going on there. Goku letting Vegeta escape at the end of the Saiyin/Saiya-Jin Story because he WANTS TO FIGHT HIM AGAIN? Yeah... F-you Goku. F-You. There's no defense for that kind of idiocy. None. But I am supposed to think of Goku as the hero? There's also the matter of Goku and his pals not really being the protectors of Earth per se... It's more like, Goku likes to fight and/or powerful beings come looking for a fight with him in particular, or the gang is doing something (with good intentions, true) that gets them into a conflict, like going to Namek and looking for a way to revive dead friends. But this is about power, and in DBZ it just gets out of control but it also gets pointless. I mean... Vegeta was already a planet destroyer when we met him. SO... Yeah, the "Power Ups" just become kind of meaningless as the show goes on, and Goku's habit of not simply one shotting an enemy because he wants to see what they can do, and thus holding back, well... That's similar to Superman not unleashing his full power because he fears what it can do, but look at the distinction... One guy holds back for his entertainment and stimulation, and the other one does so because he doesn't want to hurt those around him. But I digress...

Yeah, to make Superman stories in a modern context I think you have to thread the needle of making him impressive and powerful... But not ALL POWERFUL, ALL WISE, ALL KNOWING ect. It drains the narrative of any drive, suspense (real or false) or interesting characterization (as you just wonder why Superman with near omnipotence even allowed any situation to get to the point that he needs to intercede on a physical level?)

I'll end my little rant here. I will say, I am mostly a fan of DBZ up until the end of the Cell story. After that... Well I watched it all, but the Buu stuff? Yeah, I could care EVEN LESS than when I saw so many Android filler episodes.

Entertaining post from start to finish.
Something similar can be said about Flash before Mike Baron's renovations, the characters are too powerful, stopping them by ice or psychic power is stupid, but for those two characters (Flash and Superman) their level of power before the Crisis is part of their charm.

I can understand making Superman more vulnerable for the sake of the story, and nerf down his strength because it makes more sense for keeping the story move on, but with the inconsistent take on his powers I can't really enjoy the Timm Superman and Justice League shows as much as I love to.

I admit, DBZ did draw me because I love Superman, but man, there is plenty of mock logic there.
In one of the episodes Goku takes Cell to the planet of the guy who trained him post his first death to fight the Sayans coming after his brother (he looks more like Vegeta's brother, wonder why Goku and Vegeta are not brothers), letting Cell destroy the planet and kill Goku, that guy, and his ape.
