The Superman Look: Shaping Superman

yea i think daby was just talking more on costume look over body look and all that. I do hope they as i and supermike brought up before has a good looking body that fits with the costume and the costume shows off the body.

Exactly.

About that Chris Evan's physique. He's sixpack almost comes thru the suit, but not quite. So had he gone 300 regime, he would look like he's ripped (pun intendet) right out of a comicbook, with the muscles shown through the suit. And that's what I want for Superman. I want definition with the suit on.

First: Superman is NOT a bodybuilder. Why Not? He has superpowers so there is no need for taking steroids. He just needs to be in great shape. Why? A fat Superman would look silly on Imax. I think Brandon Routh's shape was perfect. Not to much musscle, just a great fit.

Second: His haircut needs to fit the style of the film and the actor. For example: what if Tim Burton did infact create a superman flick with Nic Cage as Superman. We've all seen him costume test with the long.. Well, maybe that would have been a great fit. Reeves hair fit the movie, as did Routh's hair. The basic idea is: his hair is black, short and needs to be suitable for Clark Kent as well as Superman.

It comes down to the total picture, actor, suit, hair, eyes....

I'm sorry but Routh's hair in supes was silly. Do you really think supes stashes a curling iron in his cape so as soon as its time for action he can meticulously curl the perfect spit-curl?! It looked contrieved. No wonder people called him metrosexual.

The curl if he has one should be naturally occuring or at least look naturally occuring. The reult of moving at fast speed and a more tussled look vs the nice and tame clark kent hair that is combed.
His hair should've looked more like this:

I think the curl is just there as a visual cue to differentiate Superman from Clark Kent. When done right it works well. When done wrong as in Superman Returns it just looks silly.

Since he doesn't wear a mask Superman does need certain visual cues to show his distinction from Clark Kent. The curl helps change the look of his face a little by falling down. If it's done right as in the Dean Cain example pic above then its fine. If it's done wrong then i'd rather they drop it.

He would still need to have more tame hair as clark and more of a tussled look as superman to help differentiate the two however. It would also make sense as he's traveling a superspeeds while dressed as supes.

yea i loved how it looked for reeve's superman. The one on routh i didnt really like due to the style and way they had it on him. Though i agree next time maybe let the hair fall more naturally and be a bit messy like while he is superman.

Now if they go for a reboot i'd go with something similar to the FF4 films. Notice the pic of chris evans, he's obviously in good shape. Then in costume it seems to preserve his mass but you just cant see the definition, which would work well for superman imho:

In Costume:

This pic does not accurately reflect Evans' size when he was in FF.
He was quite a bit larger in the film, maybe by as much as 25-30 pound bigger than what is represented in this picture.

I think in this pic his hair looks just right for use shifting between Supes and Clark.

Yet as long as it looks natural rather than contrieved/forced i'm all for it.

Routh is looking good nowadays. Too bad Singer wasted him in a half-assed movie.

Yeah you're probably right. I just found it on the web after a google search. He does a little thin compared to the movie. I don't know how old the image is.

I wouldn't mind this hairstyle for Superman, it looks natural:

Nice. Thanks everyone.

Although I'm sighing on the issue that some people want the curl and some others don't want the curl. They'll never win with some of the fans. If you want an explanation for his hair it's simple - Kryptonian Hair Gel. For those quick hair changes and to make the hair get back in place after the wind and weather have got to it. It's amazing. (*Wink and grin*). Problem solved. As I've said before I found his hair to be alright. But I'm not an obsessed about the issue that much. I don't mind having fun though...

If the actor naturally has hair that lends itself to curls...well there you go, classic S spit curl. if not, no sweat. Thinner head of hair on the next Superman, comb it neat or let it hang or what have you. each incarnation is different, not a huge deal.

yea, hopefully the next guy will have a better styled hair as both clark and superman. should be neat as clark, and maybe a more natural falling look/messy style as superman.

yeah webhead, if he's flying around, so is the hair on his head. Clark should probably be the neater style. But again not a major thing to worry about at this stage, tho this news is giving these kinds of ideas/debates/preferences on the Superman mythos new life again!

oh totally, hopefully they will make the right calls this time, dont make the mistakes SR was. And make a film fans and non fans can enjoy alot. Also will be nice to see some healing of the splintered fanbase.

I don't have any photos but his hair did move when he flew as well as get wet. I'd be grateful if someone posted the photos.

I hate to break it to you but it won't happen. There'll always be negativity with any project. At best it'll be in the minority. I'm ambivalent already.

yea no film is ever going to be 100% loved. But it would be nice to have superman in a better place with this next film.

I just hope this next film will take Superman out of development hell for good.

The "S" curl was not the Problem with Routh's hair in SR.

It was that it looked very not natural, almost like plastic.

The hair should be black, look wavy, and long enough on top have some style, yet short enough that it looks conservative and not social trend, and can be styled a little different as Clark vs. Superman.
