I'd say that a penance stare is more or less worthless on a hero, seeing as the defining difference between hero and villain (for the most part) is that a hero is able to see their own faults and regret their evil actions.

Nevermind the fact that this is Aquaman at the bottom of the goddamned ocean.

But think of all the sealife that he has failed to protect over the years. And all the pollution that he has failed to prevent that will affect the oceans for centuries to come.
