In your opinion, is (amongst the choices) your best 'follow-up' film for an original with a fair old years distance between them and why ? Did they serve justice to the original, was the continuing story well developed, had you seen sound characterisation in where you found the original characters ?

Please discuss....

Not on the poll, but Blade Runner 2049. Easily. Further explored the themes of the original while never feeling like a retread. And somehow even managed to avoid ruining the ambiguity of the original in regards to Deckard’s true origins, something I would’ve thought near impossible for a sequel to pull off. And is just a gorgeous, engrossing film, imo.

Also I don’t know if this counts, but 14 years is a long time too, so shout-out to Incredibles 2, lol.

Fixed, sorry for BR omission, I had it on my list but then it fell, my bad, back on now and will also add Incredibles 2.

"Blade Runner 2049," followed by "Tron: Legacy" and "The Color of Money."

Also going with Blade Runner 2049. While I still regard Blade Runner as the superior film (and likely one of my top 10 favorite movies), 2049 was a much better sequel than I ever anticipated. It's an amazing film, even if I do prefer the original.

Tron and Tron Legacy. Everything about Kevin Flynn's disappearance in between movies and the world building inside of his private OS was fascinating. Not to mention the aesthetic, music, technological advancement was a vast improvement over the previous film. It made sense that it would grow and evolve overtime. I know people give me sh** for loving it as much as I do, but it's such a great series and I would like to include Tron Uprising in that as well... The animated series added a lot of depth.

To be fair not seen many of the others but easily Bladerunner for me, 2049 managed to pull off the almost impossible of crafting its own unique story and characters while still feeling like the world the original created while at the same time weaving in characters and plot points from the original that naturally fit and made sense.

Even the score for 2049 was amazing when it had no right to even come close to the original masterpiece.

Its just a shame it was sort of ignored at the box office but then maybe BR just isnt exciting enough for big numbers.

Would have to go with 2049. Perfectly builds on the world of Blade Runner without being over reliant on the film. Truly a perfect companion piece of the original.

How about GODZILLA (1954) and THE RETURN OF GODZILLA (1984)...or the Americanized versions GODZILLA, KING OF THE MONSTERS! (1956) and then GODZILLA 1985 (1984).....a 30 year difference between the movies....the sequel ignores all the other Godzilla movies made between them and just continues the story as Godzilla returns after being gone for 30 years....and in the Americanized version, they actually bring back actor Raymond Burr, to play the same character he did in the original film, in scenes inserted into the Japanese production.

It's a hard choice between which is better. The sequel has the better effects and overall film making expertise....but man, I have to love the audaciousness of the original. It started a giant franchise.

Before Sunset, made 9 years after Before Sunrise.

The first one is like the ideal date movie (ie it feels like you're experiencing the ideal date). The conversations are very real and natural. The 2nd one has more of that, but also a sense of regret, but is still great.

Forget about Before Midnight though! Wasn't a fan. Although some might like that film and it is rated highly.

I don't think this was ever intended to be a trilogy to begin with. It was just an independent film that ended up as a highly acclaimed series.

Great thread idea @Mandon Knight

Blade Runner 2049 was exceptional to me as it was such a hard sequel to make, and it manages to pay reverence to the classic first film, exist in the same world, but at the same time tell a fresh story that ties organically into the first film, expand everything within the Blade Runner world and amazingly capture the sound and visual stylings without just coming off as a famboy retread.

I suppose no-one is going to vote for Independence Day and Independence Day: Resurgence? :o

I honestly thought about putting those on, then thought nah, who in their right mind will go for that.....:funny:

Here's a wild one.....

BUTCH CASSIDY AND THE SUNDANCE KID (1969) followed by the TV movie WANTED: THE SUNDANCE WOMAN (1976) that starred Katherine Ross as Etta Place (the same role she played in the original movie) and then came the prequel BUTCH AND SUNDANCE: THE EARLY DAYS (1979) that co starred Jeff Corey as Sheriff Ray Bledsoe (the role that he played in the original) thus they were all interconnected.

While the sequel and prequel were both decent movies....there was no topping the original for sheer pleasure.

We could've been talking about Top Gun and Top Gun: Maverick this year, but now we've got over a year to wait until it comes out.

While not a film sequel, there was The Karate Kid and the Cobra Kai TV series. That more than lived up to the original.

I guess Doctor Sleep is now confirmed to be a sequel to Kubrick’s The Shining, that should be an interesting one.

And as mentioned above, Top Gun is finally getting its sequel as well as Coming to America next year.

There was Split, which was a sequel 16 years after Unbreakable.

From the title of the thread...I thought they were going to make a Friends movie

They could make a sequel after many years since the series, which would then fit in with the title of this thread. :o
