This is pretty early and only a rumor, but /film says Summit Entertainment is buying the Weinstein Company after they shut down production on Halloween 3-D.

What this means for the brothers is anyones guess.
I guess this means Summit will then be the ones to make Scream 4 and Halloween 3-D as they get other money makers under their belt, and not just survive on Twilight and the tiny amount they make from other movies.

This move could make them very large players in Hollywood as they can get more francises and the WC oscar films. If this is true I'd say they may be neck and neck with Lionsgate in power.

This is only a rumor for now.

The Weinsteins are definatly in some deep trouble at the moment..but what's actually going down is anyone's guess (except for those in the "know")

that means that their planned 2010 remake of "An American Werewolf in London" might be dead! yaaah!

btw does summit also have other hit movies /franchises or is Twilight the one only one that really made alot of $$$ ?

And what if Twilight 2 and 3...etc bombs at the BO ?

Twilight Saga: New Moon has no chance of bombing. Mark my words.

Yea, too many silly girls who stab people for dissing the books out there...

I kid, I kid.

But seriously it will be crap :awesome:

Just like the Transformers movies and The Dark Knight...

I just said that to screw with a few people.

How dare you!!! Transformers and TDK are masterpieces without peer!!!

No but I get ya. :D

I expected Lionsgate to get taken over by someone before Summit would buy someone out.

TWC and Overture are both doing bad right now, but Overture is a newer company and owned by Starz Movie Channel.

The only two hits for Summit so far is Twilight and then Knowing.

Oh i know that. It was just a hypothetical question really. Honestly if you're whole success depends on one franchise , would you take a risk to buy a troubled movie studio ?

Yeah, 'cause that means that you'd have access to other franchises such as Halloween, Scream, etc.

Having access to those franchises is one thing , turning into succesful movies is another.
The first halloween movie was a hit , 2nd one bombed. Scream will be remade and most likely will become a hit. But you think the 2nd and 3rd scream movies will also be hits :cwink:

I fail to see just how Summit is going to make these franchises succesful again when most of their own movies weren't a success ( with the exception of Twilight). And Twilight will go continue for how many movies ? 3 ...4

Well Summit(THINKS) they can make the franchises a hit again. They just got a new Highlander up and running, with a script that has set up for Highlander 2.

And now their getting cash together to buy some more movies. Which is why them buying TWC makes sense. Heck I wouldn't be surprised if they buy Terminator.

If Summit keeps doing what it's doing, one of the other big studios is gonna make an offer to absorb them. But it would be in their best interest to just be their own man, so to speak.

Okay, let me set this straight. Before producing their own movies and becoming a proper studio, Summit Entertainment would co-finance and buy overseas rights to US movies such as American Pie, Memento, The Brothers Grimm, Mr. & Mrs. Smith, etc. and sell them to foreign distributors.

And guess what, they still do it.

In fact, Summit has got the overseas rights to The Book of Eli and sold them to foreign distributors (Tobis in Germany, 01 Distribution in Italy, and so on...). So, Twilight isn't the only source of money for Summit.
