The Wolverine The Wolverine Unleashed Extended Edition Blu-Ray: December 3

They apparently cut the ninja fight to get a PG-13 rating.

Yeah, I just figure the money they spent would have meant they did some tighter editing on the blood spurt stuff in order to get the bulk of it in the movie.

with the suit on.

I don't think he'll ever wear it in a movie, that's probably why they didn't use the ending in the movie, to avoid getting fans hopes up.

Will be getting mine sometime next week. I will write 30000 spoilers and thoughts about it when I've seen it. Even if half of you already know everything about it.

Saw the extended ninja fight scene, that was awesome, will watch the rest next week when the BD comes out here.

The BD/extended edition is on my christmas wish-list. :)

Mangold said they cut it because there was concern over there being too much action at the end.

If it was a ratings problem they would just trim the necessary shots. They wouldn't cut out an entire sequence. It was done for editorial and pacing reasons.

They should have cut the SS suit battle instead !

Even if we could, I'd rather get my wisdom teeth pulled out again than go to a Walmart on Black Friday.

I really need to see this. An R-rated cut of The Wolverine must be glorious :wow:

Watched the Unleashed Edition yesterday and it's alright. There isn't anything added that really enhances the film in any significant way, but it doesn't detract either.

As for the more brutal fights, they aren't particularly exciting. There is a little more gore but the sounds seem almost comically elevated to me. The Ninja fight is fun and it's great to see that reinstated.

That's also the cover to the Japanese movie theater program. Go it a few weeks ago:

Love that photo.

Too bad he never used the katana.

I didn't even notice the first time around, but it sticks out a lot in repeat viewings. Logan's katana is an important artefact in the film and it just sort of disappears.

He could have brought it to the ninja fight... maybe even kill Yashida with it.

Yeah I was dissapointed they didnt make more of that. Even if it was just seeing him walking onto the plane with it at the end or if he gave it Yukio or something. It was sadly just forgotten about.

So, whats the consensus of the Extended version guys? Better than the theatrical version?

Honestly I don't think it's better. Not to say that it's worse, but none of the additions really enhance the film. It still has the same narrative problems in the end. Still fun as a fan to have the extra bits though.

Extended edition is totally worth it. I saw it again tonight. My commute home was so long that I managed to see the entire movie on the bus. :argh:

If you liked it the first time, you should really enjoy the new stuff. It's not a whole new movie, but the story flows a little better with the extended sequences. And the new action scenes are fun too.

Yeah, one of the things I like better about the extended version is that it makes Logan seem like a more formidable fighter. In the theatrical version he spends most of the movie weakened, then you get the dramatic scene of him getting his powers back only for him to then get captured relatively easily in the next scene. I liked seeing him take down more ninjas and seeing Harada having to resort to using Viper's toxins when he originally thought they wouldn't be needed (and even then still struggling to bring him down).

I also appreciated the lingering shots of the claws actually piercing people rather then them always cutting away. Other scenes like the one between Shingen and Yashida and the extra "Kuzuri" scene helped flesh the movie out more.

Yes and he does provide some interesting info. For one thing he explained why Wolverine was scratching the trees in the opening and I don't think anyone got that right.

Cool, I'm interested to hear what he has to say

Just got the extended version. Will ramble about it when I've seen it.

Okay, watched it. Extended/previously missing scenes do not significantly improve the movie, but they add some nice touches here and there. I won't be watching the theatrical version after this though, there's no need.

Anyway, here's what I think.

Storywise, some added minutes that deepen the relationship of Shingen and Yashida a little more. Nothing special, but it makes the "company power struggle" subplot a little more whole and the actors in guestion get more deserved screen time.

I thought I saw one Famke Janssen-sequence I didn't remember seeing before. Could be wrong. Also one flashback sequence to the pit where he was with young Yashida. Could be wrong about that too, but they seemed new to me.

There's more grit to the battles, and they are longer. Funeral fight, Train fight and Ninja fight are all pretty good.

Especially the funeral fight was more enjoyable because of the added violence. Because of the shaky cam, it didn't seem that cool in the theatre. The unrated violence never goes over the top. There's just more blood and claws piercing people. Also, when people talked about CGI blood, I was worried if it's too cheap or obvious. I really couldn't tell what was CGI and what was not, so it's all very well done and doesn't feel/look fake or out of place at all. I also got the feeling that Logan got shot a couple more times. Harada got a one or two new kills, one of them was pretty cool.

At the love hotel, Yakuza attacks Logan. He mostly just takes damage, and Mariko throws some knives. This is a new scene.

Ninja fight is obviously longer. I feared it would be too cheesy, as some people have mentioned. It was...it was pretty cool. I was immediately willing to accept some silliness, and it was all done with certain amount of taste. And Logan lights up a cigar in a non-conventional way.

Shingen fight was pretty brutal. It was that in the theatre too, and I'm not exactly sure what was new, but at least three times his body was pierced with a katana.

Added language was pretty cool. The film never made a big deal of new F's or S's or D's, they flowed with the lines in a normal, natural manner. Very nice.

When the credits started to roll, my timer displayed 2:07:46 (give or take a second or two).

That was it. Viper was still a bit of an annoyance, but at least I knew what to expect. Same with the final robot. Every character got a little deeper with the added scenes, and although the movie isn't clearly better with the added minutes and violence/language, it's still preferrable with the extended cut.

This was only the 2nd time I've seen the film, so I don't probably remember everything correctly.

Yukio was amazing, and Beltrami's score. Even better the 2nd time.

There was the scene in the car that had added dialogue with Yukio. I think more in the house, Logan with the sandals, Mariko and her father argue before he sees Yashida. At the end there was a scene with Viper and Harada where she tells him to dip his arrows in her poison which I think was cut from the theater. It was actually her best scene in the movie. Where she's like "you'll need this" and Harada goes "he's no match for us, he's weak" and she's like "O-kay...but when you fail, you'll have this"

Unless I'm wrong, but I think that's new. And much better. Especially when he dips the arrows, it calls back to that scene. It's like, yep you ARE no match, now use her **** Harada.
