The Wrath Of Klaus: The Offical Werner Herzog Appreciation Thread

There it is! The much needed Herzog thread.

No other director has so swiftly become a favourite of mine. I knew the reputation of his collaborations with Kinksi, so I bought the extremely reasonably priced boxset. I loved the movies, and I was quick to order the other boxset. The man is a genius, with a style completely his own. He really is the hero of independent filmmaking, the true guerilla of film. I love watching interviews with him and reading about his crazy exploits. He might be feeding his own legend, but all in all he's just an awesome personality. His dark views on humanity which he describes in over the top and slightly awkward English poetry are awesome. ''Civilization is like a thin layer of ice upon an ocean of chaos''. His quest for new images is brave and astounding. He really created some new, iconic images. He simply did what he set out to achieve.

My favourite movie of his is Aguirre Der Zorn Gottes. It's completely mesmerizing. And after a first viewing you might think it's dull in places, but after having watched it four times you'll realize it's brilliant from beginning to end. A chain of gorgeous, insane, disturbing, hypnotic, darkly humorous and visionary images and scenes. Í'm also very fond of Nosferatu. A movie that oozes dark atmosphere and style.

And obviously, I'm looking forward to his Bad Lieutenant a great deal.

Herzog is one of the best directors of all time not just in making film but his documentries are something to be held at great acclaim. I am looking forward to Bad Lieutenant and his future projects such as My Son, My Son, What Have Ye Done
and The Piano Tuner.

I'm a big fan of Kinski (I read that he turned down Belloq in Raiders of the lost Ark, that would have been interesting to see to say the least) therefore I really like Herzog's movies too, specially Aguirre, a true masterpiece.
I also really enjoyed "My Best Fiend", and "Burden of Dreams" (about the crazy shooting of Fitzcarraldo), two great docs about movie making imo.
And I can't wait to see Herzog's take on Bad Lieutenant, the trailer looks good and it could be Cage's return to greatness.

Werner. Oh yes.

Weird, my buddy and I were talking about him yesterday and this thread pops up.

I love his films. And he is a badass.

That's all I have to say really.

his documentries are something to be held at great acclaim

I love his documentaries. Grizzly Man is pure brilliance.
Herzog is definitely one of my favourite directors, and I am really looking forward to My Son, My Son, What Have Ye Done. Werner Herzog directing and David Lynch producing makes it one movie I am certainly looking forward to.

I love Herzog's documentarie's I saw Encounters at the End of the World on the animal planet it's something else.

Anyone got any Herzog recommendations? So far I have seen:

Features:
The Enigma of Kaspar Hauser
Even Dwarfs Started Small (a whole topic can be filled with discussion about this crazy, crazy film)
Heart of Glass
Stroszek
Aguirre Der Zorn Gottes
Nosferatu Phantom of the Night
Fitzcarraldo
Woyzeck
Rescue Dawn

Fata Morgana
Cobra Verde

I only disliked the last two. Fata Morgana was sloppy and pointless and Cobra Verde a trainwreck with a beyond-control-Kinksi.

Documentaries:
My Best Fiend
Grizzly Man

Ofcourse, I still need to see Encounters at the End of the World.

I've pre-ordered Encounters at the End of the World, does anybody know if Invincible and The Wild Blue Yonder are anygood.

Yeah, I'd kill for that one. It's way, way overpriced though, especially with those extra shipping costs. If it'd be 120 euros I'd start considering a purchase...

Oh, recently there were some behind-the-scene pictures posted of Herzog's new 3D documentary, The Cave of Forgotten Dreams.

Also, just a while ago Herzog told some interviewer about two of his upcoming projects. One he described as an ''epic set in the desert'', which might very well be the Gertrude Bell biopic he has described on earlier occassions. I'm not sure who she is, but she was described by Herzog as ''a female Lawrence of Arabia''. He has currently only started writing the screenplay, so it might be a while before it sees the light of day. And the other film he is currently shooting in a maximum security prison in Texas. I'm guessing it's a documentary, but I'm not sure.

I hope this guy will keep on making two films a year!

I am interested in his new(ish) one "My son my son what have ye done."

Hell yeah, me too. I've been wanting to see it since february...It looks insane.

I used to be kind of obsessed with that Kinski doc, 'My Best Fiend', I sang vocals in a terrible electronic band round about that time, and I incorporated/adapted Kinski's speech from that opening footage from the doc into my intro to a song, building up saying 'In diiiiiiiiiiiis juuuuuuuuuice.....we will boil the slanderers! In diiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiis juuuuuuuuuuuuuuuice...we will boil the slanderers.'
that was fun, that part of the gigs.

edit: i have not seen many of his actual fictional films, I have seen 'Wocsez'(sic), the one about Kinski as the army guy home on leave, and i have tried watching Agguire, but i always ended up putting it off as i was not in the mood for it and it is a bit of an epic.
I have Grizzley man on dvd though, he makes the best documentaries. His voice is somehow so perfect for telling the stories of Kinski('he smashed everything in the bathroom to the point where you could have sieved it through a tennis racket.' 'Claraaaaaa!') and the Grizzley Man.
I read Kinski's autobiography years ago, which was a hoot, apparently he made a lot of stuff up which Herzog was ok with, just to sell more books. I think they may have talked about that in the doc.
I would love to see that new one with Cage, I'll get ahold of it someday.

I finally saw this one. I can totally understand why some people hated it, but a hardcore Herzog fan such as myself can only love it. And I do. It's another unforgettable and completely insane movie watching experience. It's completely experimental, from the camerawork to the narrative and even the acting to some degree. This movie is Herzog's experimental low-budget playground, and for a guy who is nearing 70....you can almost hear Herzog chuckling in enjoyment. I've seen some 20 movies by him and while there are some connections to be made, this movie is quite unique in his body of work. Some parts are a bit tedious and have wooden acting but scenes like this are quickly followed by bits and pieces of genius. You need to watch this in almost the same mode in which one needs to watch Bad Lieutenant. It's basically an absurd comedy, and absolutely hilarious in places. Michael Shannon is my favourite looney in the biz today and I'll watch him in anything now. Recommended for the fans :D

Also when it comes to Herzog, I have also recently checked out more of his documentaries. The White Diamond is absolutely tremendous. Gorgeous images and very moving. Little Dieter Needs To Fly is pitch-perfect and an essential companion piece to Rescue Dawn. Wings of Hope I liked a bit less but was still worth watching.

I really want to see it , I might have to order online.

Hi guys!

Here's my new short film, weirdly entitled "Herzog: The Wrath Of Klaus" (you can see why I posted it here lol) in which I play both Herzog and Kinski: two mad geniuses sharing a flat in London.

Enjoy this first, very silly, trailer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0z4CId34Iho

More info on the film can be found on http://www.razorheadfilms.blogspot.com
@RazorheadFilms on Twitter
and by "liking" Razorhead Films on Facebook.

Thanks guys! Spread the word ;)
