UPDATE ON THE STATUS OF AJ STYLES, AND OTHERS, WITH TNA
by Dave Scherer @ 4:15 PM on 8/22/2013

As Mike reported earlier today on the site, AJ Styles' contract with TNA will be ending very soon. Unlike in the past with TNA however this is not a case of a contract expiring abruptly. Styles and TNA management have been in talks for a new deal for a while now. They have yet to agree on a new deal but discussions are ongoing. But there is a very real possibility that Styles will leave TNA and there is only one reason for that: Money.

John "Big" Gaburick has replaced Bruce Prichard as the man in charge of Talent Relations for TNA. People in TNA have described the company as going through a period of transition right now. Having worked in the past for WWE, Gaburick brings in knowledge as to how things work in a successful wrestling promotion and he is implementing them now. At the same time, TNA is working under a budget more now than they ever have in the past and when that is the case, hard choices have to be made. While everyone I spoke to in TNA told me that they want AJ to stay, it will come down to whether the deal makes sense to them financially. From AJ's perspective, he has over a decade of service and goodwill with the company. Like anyone in that position, he doesn't want to stay even or go backward financially. TNA management understands that but they also realize that they don't have unlimited finances and thus have to spend their money as judiciously as possible. They want AJ to stay but they also understand that if he can get a better deal for his family, he should take it and move on.

The company has set an objective recently to try and uncover young talent. Going foward, they will be looking for young workers to add to their roster. The sad reality of the situation is that after a decade in TNA, their audience has plateaued. It could be that AJ's experience and tenure have priced him out of TNA. If they can bring in four or five guys for the price of his contract, it is something that they have to consider.

There are at least two other wrestlers being affected by the new reality of TNA right now as well. They are Ken Anderson and the person that loses the fall of tonight's match on Impact. Anderson is in a similar situation to AJ in that the sides are still talking and it could go either way but will probably go down to the wire. The person that loses tonight's fall is said to be leaving in the next month or two.

It should also be noted that every single talent in TNA's contract is, or has been, evaluated by management. For those of you who know NFL football and the salary cap, think about it in those terms. There have been countless beloved superstar athletes that have been let go due to cold, hard finances. That is the exact position TNA is in right now.

What a coincidence, I have that exact same bra.

And in anticipation of your next question, yes, if you accidentally wear it inside out, it really hurts.

Right. "Accidentally."

Lord Miss Assmacher's shorts!

I hate you for sure Bullly!

Samoa Joe can't lose. He's not leaving TNA without an explanation about that ninja storyline.

It finally dawned on me why TNA looks like the minor leagues to me. It's the smaller ring. Just looks low budget.

According to last night's edition of Wrestling Observer Radio, hosted by Dave Meltzer, WWE has been discussing the idea of dropping the Hell in a Cell themed PPV after this year's event. It was noted that the Hell in a Cell match itself would not go away, but it would instead be used as a special match when needed on PPV and would not be a PPV itself. Discussion of dropping the Hell in a Cell PPV has taken place in the past.

DO IT! This is the one PPV I want them to drop the most.

Did I just spot Rellik in the crowd (you know, Killer spelled backwards)?

Wait, so the HiaC would be used as a special attraction match as it was originally meant to be and not just another gimmick? That... just might work!

Hell in a Cell 2012 was a terrible PPV. I paid $60 to take a nap. Lol

Who woulda thunk it? They actually had it right the first time around.

So, if AJ and D-Von go, is it safe to say they're WWE? Or will they go to ROH or Japan or indie?

I think Devon would be of good use to the WWE in a non-wrestling capacity.

With WWE Developmental ever growing, they are going to need more trainers and I believe Devon also lives in the area.

- As we reported earlier this week, CM Punk's outburst on Raw this week, directed at a fan that apparently got under Punk's skin, was not part of the script and was a genuine response from Punk.

In an update to this story, PWInsider.com is reporting that while WWE doesn't generally promote this type of on-air behavior from its babyfaces, there was said to be no heat on Punk following the segment. The feeling was that because the outburst elicited a great response from the crowd, and Paul Heyman was able to work it into his part of the segment so well, that it ended up adding a lot to the segment and the eventual Curtis Axel fight.

- It was noted during last night's edition of Wrestling Observer Radio, hosted by Dave Meltzer, that WWE has been discussing the idea of holding next year's SummerSlam PPV at Madison Square Garden in NYC. MSG was the site of the first SummerSlam, and the event has been held at The Staples Center in LA for the past 5 years.

- As we reported yesterday, the Facebook page of the Save Mart Center in Fresno, CA is advertising Rey Mysterio for tomorrow night's WWE Live Event.

Mysterio has now also been added to the rest of WWE's events this weekend in Ontario, CA and San Diego, CA.

Sami Zayn wants a title shot against Bo Dallas. The segment is interrupted by Zeb Coulter and Jack Swagger. Swagger attacks Zayn.

The post-show dark segment featured Mark Henry beating up Sylvester Lefort to send the crowd home happy.

A wig got split

I wouldn't mind AJ jumping, but then again, he would probably be booked to sh**. Best he stays with TNA at least until Bound For Glory.

In order to be respectful to the next wrestler from the 1990s to kill himself.

If SS is going to be as good next year as Sunday, I will definitely be there. I missed WM20, I can't miss SS 2014 (if at the Garden, while it's still there).

This would be great. The first time the Hell in a Cell was announced between Shawn Michaels and Undertaker I was like, "Oh ****!":wow:

Now it's just kinda meh because it happens at the same time every year. Sure some matches are good, but it needs that special feel to it. Ya know, that feel that these two guys are so pissed that they need to be locked in the HiaC to settle their differences and end the feud. Going back to that would do wonders.

Now if they can just bring back a proper King of the Ring I might actually buy the hell out of it.

AJ staying in TNA is a bad idea, if you ask me. He doesn't have to go to the 'E, but he's got to get out of TNA. He's been running in circles for year, and the one time they did try to really change him up, they screw it up and throw it away. AJ's accomplished all he ever will in TNA and needs to move on. One reason TNA and AJ is stale, he's been doing the same **** for near a decade.

Perhaps a run in Japan or a return to ROH. He's lightyears better than he was when he was first in ROH, it would be as much different feel for him there, completely different landscape.

But, I won't lie, I want to see him in the 'E. I think he might be able to get something going there. I don't think WWE would crush him just because he was King **** in TNA, I think this would be one of the few times they embrace that. Because there is money to be had in AJ Styles and WWE wouldn't be stupid enough to miss that (for once).
