There are 9 seasons, which yes, is a lot to watch before January, considering they generally have 24-25 episodes per season. I'm currently watching the series for the 1st time, and am just beginning S4. What I can tell you is that there's a very clear formula for every season, which consists of a handful of "mytharc" episodes spread out throughout the season which focus on the main big picture story of the series (always including the season premiere and finale), and the rest are pretty much standalone "monster-of-the-week" type deals. While I do feel some of the very best episodes of the series are those standalone eps, and you'd miss out on a lot of great stuff by skipping them, it is also possible to JUST watch the mytharc eps and pretty much know what's going on.are there any recommded episode to watch that may be linked/reference in this mini series. I don't have time to watch 8 season of Xfiles
I'm just going to safely assume that the entire last half of the last season was just a bad dream and they wake up in the pilot of this new season. It'll make more sense that way.

Not crazy about those, tbh.
A little disappointing to hear that there will only be 2 episodes that deal with the mythology, and 4 that are standalone/monster episodes. I was hoping that since there's only 6 episodes, that they would focus more on the mythology.
Bummer....
